Well, that's the basic flaw with a series that's based on a singe event. Both FlashForward and The Event were written around a single event- so they had no choice- they had to drag things out to prolong the series.
No they had a choice. Since you haven't seen The Event yet I won't spoil it but the show spent the entire season not only avoiding mentioning what it was by every concerned party, but they could have easily moved it to the half way point and given the show years of interesting stories. Like so many network sci-fi shows it didn't have the guts to go all out and the interesting science-fiction concepts were tangential and barely used so NBC didn't scare off the viewers who wanted to watch 24 without Jack Bauer.
Same thing with Flash Forward. Hours of love triangle boredom when that show really needed more of the 24 angle. Big concept, little execution, bad drama.
Both shows cancelled themselves by avoiding their big premise to aim for the mainstream audience. Boring those who wanted something cool and different and failing to deliver to the procedural action junkies and those who wanted straight up drama with interesting characters. By the time they had got around to being interesting and living up to their titular potential the audience had given up.
So at least FS is wearing it's aliens and spaceships on it's sleeve and not hiding them behind a cop drama as it pretends to be something else to lure in everyone who doesn't like science-fiction.Edited by VisionOn - 7/5/13 at 8:44am
