'Falling Skies' on TNT HD - Page 30

Babylon 5 for the first 3 1/2 seasons might be. When they ended the shadow war by telling them to "get the hell out of our galaxy" and they did, it was very anticlimatic. (plus killing off the most interesting character, Kosh did not help as well).

Star Trek the original series is still on top by a long shot in my book. Unique for its time and just a better chemisty amongst the crew who did not walk around like they had sticks up their butts ala TNG.

The original Twilight Zone is right up there as well.

Works for me!

Had that been the case, "V" would still be running ..

As long as we're throwing out what each thinks were good scifi series, I nominate Farscape. Good story arc, character development and great humor. I watched all of Babylon 5, was a fan of Stargate and BG, pretty much followed all of the Star Trek franchise. I rank Farscape and Firefly as my favorites.

'Sliders', 'Mystery Science Theater 3000', 'Dr. Who', 'The X-Files',

'Lost' .. 'Heroes' .. ??

If this show was during the network season, then I think that the long break between seasons would hurt it a lot. By being on TNT in the summer and there being no uncertainty of when it is coming back I don't think there will be as much of a problem. It was a good summer show and viewers should return to see it again next summer. Putting it up against new network shows would be a mistake.

As far as favorite SF show - Babylon 5 is my #1 favorite, but I've also enjoyed a good number of those mentioned in previous posts.

I did see both seasons of the new 'V' and I was hoping that it would improve, but I was quite disappointed. I have enjoyed Falling Skies so far and I am intrigued as to where it will go next season.

I'd probably agree with that. Though BSG is my favorite drama of all time as well (Breaking Bad and The Wire right behind it). I know it has a SciFi setting, but I think of it as a drama first. That's probably the same reason I loved Firefly as well...SciFi was more of a setting than anything else.

After those I'd probably put The X-Files, Lost and maybe even Journeyman, as short lived as it was. Probably have to throw Doctor Who in there as well (Older, scarier Doctor Who).

Then I'd put the middling shows like Dollhouse and the Stargate series.

And then we have shows that simply weren't good (mainly due to horrible writing), and that's where you'd find Falling Skies. You'd also find V, The Event, Flash Forward and others here as well.

I'd also have special sections for shows that I didn't like or found too cheesy like B5, Torchwood, Farscape and Star Trek. And another section for shows that started out with promise, but then turned into a giant clustereff, like Heroes.

Why does this discussion keep getting off topic ? What does any of the current topics have to do with Falling Skies ? Who cares about other Sci Fi shows ? If you want to talk about them go to boards focusing on them and keep it off here *rolleyes* !!

We've got to talk about something for the next ten months.

Agree with just about everything you posted.

The only one you missed was The 4400.

Of course, everyone seems to have forgotten one of the other greats: The Outer Limits.

I would also submit that the 1st season or two of "Lost In Space" was actually very watchable and entertaining. It wasn't until about season 3 things got silly and idiotic. The pilot episode of the show actually had some great effects and stuck to pretty mainstream SciFi. The Chariot was quite possibly one of the best props in any show at the time.

The 4400 still pisses me off. I really liked that show. They had planned for five seasons. They make it through four seasons and then USA canceled it before the fifth season which would have closed out all the story lines.

Or maybe I assume since this is a Falling Skies discussion board that *gasp* I might actually see discussions on that show and not everything else and other sci fi shows- I guess that's asking too much

But the irony of comments like that, is the poster doesn't start a discussion either. They just throw a suggestion out there but can't think of anything to talk about related to the show either.

You can always tell the engagement depth of a show by how quickly a thread goes off-topic talking about other things.

Look at the actiivity. If it hadn't been for posts about other shows this thread would have already been buried in the archives until next year.

The Outer Limits anyone?

Specious post.

Maybe the reason the topic would have been buried until next year is that the season is OVER and it won't airing until next year. It's natural for shows to fall off the front pages when they aren't airing...it's not some sort of indictment against the perceived lack of quality or lack of viewer engagement.

We're in between seasons here and discussing some good sci fi and how it compares to Falling Skies is very appropriate, IMHO. It was from an informal discussion from a thread like this that I heard about BSG and Firefly.

Before the new season of Falling Skies is broadcast in the summer of 2012, I think it would be imperative that viewers re-watch all ten episodes from this season in order to refresh the story. This gap is so wide that many viewers will be remarried, moved to a different home, raising new children, finally finding a job, suffering from Alzheimers or dead before the next season begins.

Well said.

I had a similar experience with the Syfy show "Alphas", which I already enjoy much better than I ever liked "Falling Skies".

Summer Glau from "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" and "Firefly" will guest star on this weeks episode. (August 22nd)

Not me. I thought the first two seasons of BSG were among the best television ever produced, but it went down hill from there. I think Firefly is vastly overrated. It was entertaining, but not remotely in my top five. I'd put Trek (original and Next Generation), X-Files, Stargate:SG1, Journeyman, Torchwood, and Hitchhiker's Guide way ahead of Firefly.

I'd put Doctor Who and Babylon 5 ahead of BSG.

Falling Skies is wayyyyyyy down the list. It's down there somewhere with Buck Rogers, Andromeda, the original Battlestar Galactica, and UFO. It's barely a step up from Cleopatra 2525.

Me....in post 883 above...

Now, the question is, how do teen soap operas with sci-fi elements play into the scheme of things, namely Kyle XY and Roswell?

To me, while I found them both entertaining, they (in my opinion) fall under the follwing comparison:

Roswell and Kyle XY are to SciFi
as
The Vampire Diaries is to Horror

They have elements common to the genre, but are most decidedly intended to appeal to teen girls and young women. You can smell the sex and angst a mile away. Someone with a 6 pack is obligated to occasionally go shirtless. On the other hand, you can't deny the hotness of the female characters.

The question though, is that a bad thing? If our girlfriends and wives (hopefully not both at the same time) find themselves embracing SciFi, does it make it easier for them to understand its appeal to us?

Watching Falling Skies, I was reminded of two very old series, the Japanese anime series Robotech, and The BBC series, Tripods.

Well, first off I certainly wouldn't rate Falling Skies with dreck like Buck Rogers! And UFO is one of my all time favorites!

my order would be something like:

Babylon 5 : yes actors were no names but the story arc was the best ever.
Firefly : Witty and vastly underrated.
Farscape : Maybe the most creative show EVER!
BSG : Not sure I got the ending but for four years it was the best thing on TV.
UFO : Four words: purple haired moon woman! Yet they did do some real science stories. And the theme music was so cool!

I do wish Journeyman had gotten a fair shake.
Buck Rogers, Andromeda, the original Battlestar Galactica, Cleopatra 2525 (don't remember UFO) are nothing more than something to do on a Saturday when nothing else was on. Falling Skies may not be the best show ever but it's not on the same lower level as those shows.
I actually liked Buck Rogers!...especially after they brought on Hawk as his nemesis-turned-ally...his eagle/predator ship had a really cool design as well...and Erin Gray was hot back in the day as Wilma Deering
