Monoprice 14awg speaker wire has outer diameter of 7.5 mm = 0.29 inches so 1/4" expandable techflex should do it.
Thank you for that and for reminding me to do my homework before I lay out my hardly-earned bucks. Now, maybe I can pass the test. Monoprice's site says their 14AWG zip-cord is 8.00mm x 4.00mm and I'll probably trim the pants quite short for my first cables.

Parts Express says their ID is 8mm and Monoprice says their OD is 8mm; will this still be too tight a fit? If it's close, is it safe to use a lubricant? Vegetable oil?

Is there a simple way to estimate the length of TechFlex required? An 8mm x 4mm zip-cord is 126% x 63% of a (circular) 1/4" cover. It seems to me that, in this case, I wouldn't need much more TechFlex than I have wire to cover. (Anyway, I'm building a 10' cable as a test and I'm going to get at least 25' of TechFlex.)

Techflex measurements are pretty accurate as they expand in circumference and not much in length. Barring any brainfarts a 25' length of Techflex will easily make two 10' lengths.

What's great is a bunch of people building cables they like, telling each other
what they've used and how they're constructed, and avoiding futile and
interminable arguments about sound quality.

I've spent the last few days sulking but I'm ready again to build a pretty
cable so the sound looks better. Online vendors, ahoy!

You can heat up the ends to keep them from fraying. I did not do that in my case, I wrapped the techflex around the 12awg monoprice using a piece of electrical tape. This kept it from pushing back when I put the cable pants onto the ends. It also increases the diameter a little bit to make the cable pants a little more snug. Some other people here used shrink wrap on the ends, so it's up to you which ever you prefer.

Cut the tech flex with a hot knife, it will seal the ends off a bit.

Cutting Techflex with a hot knife is best, but most people don't own a hot knife. Trimming with a scissors is fine but it can make a huge mess. If you trim with a knife or scissors do it over over the sink or into a plastic bag. If working with Techflex for the first time, cut off a 1' piece and mess around with it. Cut it, burn an end with a lighter, or practice with heat shrink or electrical tape. You'll inevitably make a small mistake your first time--make it on a "test run" before butchering a pair of cable pants or wasting a 9' piece of speakwire when you need a 10'.

True but by a hot knife, I just meant get a knife, get it hot with a lighter or stove and cut. Works just as good.

Come on guys, now all ye need a someone that can print speaker designations on heat shrink to ID where the wires go... might be a way for some one to make some money.. I think it would look sharp to have the labels shrunken on the plugs them selves.

I haven't put anything together yet but I just got the cable and bananas in the mail. Damn BJC and GLS are quick! The bananas look great and I can't wait for my techflex and cable pants to get here.

Bad? No! That's a great set of tag lines.

For an isolated tag line, though, I really like "Experience the Darkness", even if
it's not as good a fit with the "Evil" theme.

where are you getting the gls plugs from? I'm in canada so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. My nak ones are not here yet and I demanded a refund. They don't even have a tracking number on the package the dude said.
I guess I'll grab some GLS ones now instead.

How did you get in touch with them? I'm thinking of asking for a refund too at this point.

I sent them an email and they sent one back and said they will let me know tomorrow if they are going to give me a refund or try to send them again lol.

I just bought the black chrome GLS plugs off of Orange County Speaker on ebay. Shipping is nuts @ $20 but the quality will hopefully make up for the shipping.

they won't ship to canada on the site, said you have to call but no one answered when I did. Got them on ebay from same store though.

We will ship to Canada and most other countries. You can call us at 714-554-8520 and place the order over the phone (Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm Pacific time). You can also order from Amazon.com and they will also ship to most countries.

Take care,

You might want to check earlier posts in this thread but I thought I read that the GLS on eBay are not originals. Eric Sunda from OC posted in this thread regarding it. I think they only sell through their website and Amazon.com. My point for mentioning is you might not have gotten genuine GLS connectors. Send him a PM to confirm.

handuin,

Thanks for bringing this up. We do actually sell on eBay as well under the User ID "speakerrepair.com". The person that was selling counterfeits on eBay has been removed. But if anyone orders from us directly (speakerrepair.com) they are definitely genuine.

Honestly, we don't like selling on eBay because of their extremely high fees (among other issues), but we feel we have to. We prefer directly through our website or Amazon.com.

I am glad you were able to get the counterfeit dealer taken care of. I didn't know you also sold through eBay, thanks for clarifying.

No one answered and I want them...like yesterday lol
Amazon.com won't ship pretty much anything but software and books to Canada.
It's a good thing you have a store on Ebay or I wouldn't have bought any.
I read that the place I got them from was legit, so I went ahead and ordered 28 of them. The black chrome ones are much nicer looking that the locking ones IMO.

Very good.

But what would you call HDMI cables then?

They carry both video and audio...
