I just checked this out. I believe the reason why my recorder does not record on full screen is because of the setup of my devices.
Briefly describing my setup.
HD Cable Box connected to Vizio TV using HDMI cable.
HD Cable Box connected to Magnavox 2160 Recorder with S-Cable and audio cables.
DVD player connected to Magnavox Recorder using S-Cable and audio cables.
Magnavox Recorder connected to TV using S-Cable and audio cables.
Also, I misstated which portions of my screen are blacked out when using the recorder. It is the top and bottom sections of the screen, not the right or left side.
What I do not understand is my recorder copies any disk when I go from the DVD player to the recorder exactly as the disk video appears after being filtered. But, when going from the cable box to the recorder the recorder shrinks the picture. Perhaps I need to get another filter to use from the Cable Box to the Recorder?
My television screen size can be adjusted to one of four settings, Full, Stretch, Normal and Panoramic. None of these settings will permit me to record using the Magnavox that will deliver a full screen picture. Only when I use the signals from the HDMI cables will I see a full screen picture or when going through a filter from the DVD player to the recorder.
Finally, my Magnavox 2160 does not have any HDMI input/output so I had no choice but to go with the weaker connection.
