Any AVR deals going on? Online? In stores?

I need a new AVR and have known it for a year or so. However, I have hesitated at buying a new one for two reasons 1) I was getting married and 2) it was going to be difficult to move everything in my center. Well, we have everything moved right now to install new hardwood floors so if there was ever a time to do it, now is it. I'm not looking to get the biggest and the best. I would just like something that is better than what I have now (Yamaha 5840), something that isn't already outdated, and something that has several HDMI inputs.

All of that being said, are there any deals going on? Online? In stores? I've read a few threads about a Denon at Best Buy and talking the manager down in price. That may be out of my price range but you never know until you try.

There are almost always deals....

Note that the best New Egg deals seem to require that you are signed up for them to get the email or something like that.

The best thing to do is visit some of the deal aggregators online such as dealnews or logicbuy .. there are constant deals on AVR's being listed .. find a deal then print it out and take to B&M retailer and try to get a price match if they sell the product if you prefer to buy in person

Thanks guys. Do I need a 5 or 7 channel AVR? What about the ones that are 3-D? Is that something worth paying for? Or would I be paying for something most people probably wouldn't use?

Not trying to be a smartass, but I don't really know what the advantages of 7.1 or 3-D are. As far as speakers go, I've got a center channel, 2 front speakers, 2 back speakers, and a bass. The center and 2 fronts were later purchases. When it comes to the 3-D, my current AVR doesn't even have HDMI. So it's all new to me ...

3D TV over HDMI 1.4a is only necessary if you are sure you will buy a 3D capable TV within the next several years. Beyond that time frame, you would probably need new electronics anyway.

7.1 adds true "rear" speakers to the setup, 5.1 surround speakers are really "side speakers". Your room layout has to accomadate rear speakers 3' to 5' behind the listening position to be effective. The typical "couch against the wall" setup will not work well for 7.1, but is just fine for 5.1

There is little content available with 7.1 encoding .. if you are planning for the future, certainly 7.1 or 7.2 as well as 3D might be worth getting, although there is even less 3D content .. just all depends on what you want to spend, what you think your future needs might be, etc ..

5.1 receivers are usually the cheapest and lowest powered receivers in a manfuacturers line. I would push for the better mid range models, personally, which are usually 7.1, even if you only want a 5.1 setup.

Thanks guys, that helps. I’m sure a 5.1 will be fine for me. As for the 3D, I might get a 3D TV if more programming is available and pricing comes down. In that case, I would need a 3D AVR I guess. At the same time, we’re probably looking at 3-5 years.

So, it looks like I want a 5.1 with HDMI out/in. Any suggestions?

PS ... I was typing my response as a couple responses went in so I apologize for being repetitive.

My personal choice would be the Onkyo 608 .. I use one on my secondary system and it has been flawless as well as having a lot of value for the money ..

How do the two recommended Onkyo's compare to the Denon 591?

Any thoughts on the 2 suggestions - Onkyo RC270 & 608? What about the Denon 591?

It sounds like you are looking for the best deal possible. There are far better deals on last year's non 3d receivers. 3D is still in its infancy and the content is simply not there. What is your price range roughly?
