Onkyo HT-RC270 Official thread - Page 24

I finally decided to run Audyssey due to my receiver no longer produces any sound.  So i get to the point where it tells me to adjust the volume level on the sub-woofer to 75 db.  This is a powered sub, however, the volume level has only hash marks, there is no indication of any db hashes.  The manual indicates to turn it to maximum and press ENTER to proceed to next step.  On doing so, nothing happens, I cannot go on to the next step.  So I am totally stuck.

The sub is a Polk Audio PSW505, if it matters.

Any help appreciated.  If I cannot get this working, I guess I will have to install my Denon 2312, or go back to my Onkyo TX-NR906, which I had problems with it in the past.

^^
If that sub setting feature isn't working properly for you, a good starting point with any sub is about just below mid to mid volume level (or 10-12 o'clock). Run Audyssey for 1 position to see where it sets the sub trim. As long as its not maxed out (ie. -15db) but rather is closer to +/-3db, you're good to go, otherwise, back the sub volume down another "hash mark" and run it for 1 position again. When it's within +/-3db, run the max number of mic positions.

JD, thanks for the reply.  It doesn't matter where I dial the volume level to, Audyssey will not proceed any further .  On hitting the ENTER button I can see a red light flash every time I hit the ENTER bottom, but it will not proceed to the next step.

First note that the manual only indicates setting the sub volume to max if doing so still results in a < 75db reading. What is the sub reading on the AVR? If that reading is well below 75db, the red flashing light likely means that the sub is defective. frown.gif
Do you hear any noise coming from the sub when the test tone is played? If not, pull the cable from the AVR and rub your finger over it ... do you hear a static noise? If not, either the cable or sub is defective.

Sorry for the delay in responding, but I had to go out of town.

BTW, I had earlier mentioned that none of my speakers produced any sound including the sub.

Here is what I did to get sound on all the speakers including the sub:  I turned off RIHD, and then got out of the AVR's menu, then I went back into it, and turned on RIHD, and low and behold all speakers are now on, including the sub.  I then started Audyssey, and adjusted the volume on the sub to 75db and everything is working fine, it seems.  The only problem I have is the ICON of the speaker with the red slash through it, is still on.

BTW, which is the better AVR, the RC270 or the Denon 2312?

Many thanks for the help, JD.

Strange that the RIHD setting would cause the issue. I'd give Onkyo a call on the speaker icon meaning. The 2312CI as it has the higher version of Audyssey MultEQ XT.

Actually, that had happened before, but I had made so many changes I didn't know what fixed it.

Many thanks, again.  I think I will go that route to the 2312, which is still in it's original box..

Recently moved and can NOT find the remote. mad.gif

I've found via Onkyo that the remote is "RC-768M" but I'm having a hard time justifying $50 for something I only use to do setup and select inputs. Are there any universal remotes that work better than others with the HT-RC270 and are around $50 or less?

I use a Logitec Harmony One, and love it. Works well, and you don't need the Onkyo remote to program it, just your computer.
Haha.. got a Logitech Harmony and wouldn't you know it, ONE day later the amp died. It still passes through video and all the OSD menus and display works - just zero audio output on any channel.

I'm searching, but - has this happened to anyone? Anything I should look for inside the chassis or a way to 'reset' it?

I first thought it was HDMI out of my DIrecTV receiver but the HDMI out of the PS3 was the same way. My last test was straight RCA into AUX and couldn't get any audio out of there either in Mono or All Channel Stereo.

I got it for Christmas last year, so I'm guessing it's just out of warranty.

IF you got it for Christmas then it hasnt been a year yet. Even refurb Onkyo's come with a 1 year warranty, new receivers are 2 years.

My guess is your receiver is still under warranty.

Dangit.. went back and looked and I received it January '11, so it was two Christmases ago. I also confirmed it was a refurb, so I'm SOL there.

I left it unplugged over night and then did the 'while in standby, hold VCR, then power on' to clear all settings. I only plugged in the L/R mains and still am not getting any audio. If the amp protection circuit triggered, I think it power off the unit and makes the red standby light flash, so I don't think that's it.

I think the last thing I'll try is headphone connection only - no speakers at all, then try my luck with Onkyo support.

My best guess at this point is that something inside got jostled loose during the move even though it worked for a few weeks after unpacking.

Edited to add: Confirmed no amplified audio via headphone connection. However, if I select 'pure audio' (pass-through?) I can turn volume up to max on the iPhone (plugged in to aux input) and get audio that way. Will call a local electronics repair shop or Onkyo tomorrow.

One final follow-up.

Repair shop says HDMI board is dying and only switching and passing video. New board will be $383 + shipping. eek.gif

Oh well, off to look for receiver deals.

My media streaming was working very well. I was using XBMC. Recently did the firmware update for the receiver as well as upgraded to the new XBMC. I should also mention that I am streaming music from a Mac. Since the two updates I have not been able to find the media server when I search for servers on thru the receiver. Does anyone have a success streaming using a mac with the new updates?

I'm trying to get my receiver to pass through video and audio, while the reciever is turned off. I have video to working pass through, but no audio. Can someone give me a clue on what other set-up details I can try. By the way I've used the guide on page 14 of this thread.

Something has been bugging me with my HT setup lately and I thought I would ask about it. I don't know if it's an issue with my Receiver, or if it's even an issue at all.

When watching HD Cable, or a Blu-Ray, the HDMI has to constantly handshake as I go from Menus or stuff like that. Is this normal? I always lose a second or two of video until the handshake completes. I know I have my reciever set to "through" resolution. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Maybe this is an issue with my BD Player. It seems to do it the worst. Every time I change menus, another handshake!

Thanks.
Have you tried different cables? I can understand handshake when switching switching inputs or from the main menu on the receiver to an input but when you are on a single source unless the device is set up where it's changing resolutions constantly or forcing a handshake. I'd check the cable(s) 1st. You could also seeing the 1st signs of hdmi board failure which has been fairly common with this model.

I have tried different cables. I don't think the issue lies there.

What is this thing with the HDMI Board going bad and is there a way to test it? My receiver only handshakes in-between menus like on a Blu-Ray. I am not losing a signal when I am watching something, thankfully.

Blu-Rays don't tend to change resolution from menu to menu, do they? I just don't know what triggers the re-handshakes. I went in and set my Blu-Ray player to only output 1080P, it was set to auto before. I will see if that makes a difference. I still have the reciever set to "through" though.

Are you using HDMI connection?
I just picked up a used one this weekend. The previous owner, whom I believe is a bit of an enthusiast based on him having an Oppo BD player on the shelf, gave me a demo and all was running perfectly. I was a bit afraid of the reported issues of inputs cycling / not responding to remote commands, etc reported all over here and elsewhere, but hope it was limited to a few production lots, as none of the symptoms were present during the demo. He bought it approximately 2 years ago on Amazon and picked it up in the US. I can't wait to complete my build and get this baby up and running.

Yes all connections are on HMDI

Does your TV support ARC? Do you have the HDMI plugged into the ARC input of the TV? Did you verify settings on the TV and the receiver? Just a few things to test out. What are you trying to output audio wise? I've never had an issue once I set the receiver and TV up correctly.

Not sure anyone is still following this very closely, but I have a questions and tried searching with no help. I have my projector hooked up as the sole output of this receiver. I have PS3 and Cable box hooked up via HDMI. It is also set up with Ethernet for media center and Pandora access. My questions is this. Can I watch cable tv on the projector, with no volume and listen to Pandora at the same time? I can't figure out if there is a zone 2 workaround or a standby passthough that I could make work. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it.

Hi vbman29, you could feed the Z2 outputs back into the analog input of your cable box (HDMI 3 CBL/SAT). Then watch tv but manually select Analog under Audio Selector menu (switch back to HDMI when finish).

Or feed Z2 outputs back into the analog TV/CD input. Select your video input source (cable box), wait until the source video is playing, then on the remote press "Receiver" button and then "TV/CD" (or "AM" or "FM" for tuner).
