Yamaha YSP-4000/blu-ray surround sound problem

Hi all,
I bought my parents a new Sony s570 blu-ray player for Christmas. They have a Sony Bravia 50" (maybe 55") LCD tv, and everything runs through a Yamaha YSP-4000 sound bar. The blu-ray is connected via HDMI directly to the sound bar, and the sound bar connects via HDMI to the tv.

Typically, the sound bar detects the right type of audio and outputs either analog or digital. When we played a blu-ray disc (Apolcalypto), the picture looked great, but I noticed it had analog sound. I checked the disc settings (5.1) and the blu-ray player settings (also set up to automatically detect audio). I tried putting in a regular DVD, and the surround sound worked. Tried the other blu-ray (Star Trek) - no surround sound. Even when we went back to watching tv (via HD cable through the Yamaha), some of the shows had 5.1.

I'm a bit stuck. I'm not sure if it's the blu-ray player, the sound bar, or even the HDMI cable itself. At this point, I'm thinking it may be the YSP-4000 but any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!
Check if you can force teh blu-ray player to output only 5.1 DD or DTS audio..
and then test..i.e. instead of automatic try manually setting it to these types..
i am not sure if thats allowed in teh player settings but in my PS3 it does allow me to specify what output i want..

also another test you can do is hooking up the player directly to the TV and using the optical output to connect it to the sound bar (i am not sure if both player and sound bar have optical ports but i would guess they do have it).

try these options and post back with your results.

Hi Delecto,
If you watched Apocolyto, the uncompressed is PCM. The yamaha does not do multicannel pcm, so it comes in and then is decoded as Dolby pro logic 2 or dts neo 6. Neither is as good as real 5.1 . I believe if you chose Dolby( not unconpresed pcm) in Apocolyto menu, you should get 5.1
Only the newer Yamahas do the uncompressed codecs

Thanks to you both! I had to put the sound issue on hold b/c we're having issues with the wifi/streaming on the blu-ray player (like, Netflix keep rendering/loading, making movies unwatchable). Once we get that sorted out, then I can get back to the surround sound problem. I'll give both suggestions a shot...
Thanks again
