OK Success It's A Seagate ST3000DM001 identical to the one I got from Amazon last week for $169 bucks same as the NewEgg one I bought for $189.00 that was DOA ..add the saving PLUS the fact that the base can STILL be used as a Hot Swap USB 3.0 bay as well As the base is a completely separate unit that has a SATA interface both power & Sata connections are spaced just as a HOT Swap bay would be
Just lay any SATA drive down on it's side => plug the base in to the drive => you have power & a USB 3.0 transfer connection Cool ! . This is a Heck of a deal ..............
the ST3000DM001 is the 1Tb per platter drive
Mystery solved !!!!!!!!!!

Awesome. Great job! I have a bunch of similar "docks" in my ever gorwing misc parts/cables box from all the hard drives I have harvested as well.

I think I have Eight 2TB drives in my house now (with the exception of the Goliath server that I am building which by itself has 7 drives inside) and an occasional 1TB here and there.

Oh yeah I have a 3TB Seagate external as well ($121 with Staples PM and coupon). I was going to turn it into a parity drive for my server but decided against it for now.

In any event great pics! Sure to help someone else!

I must state as a disclaimer If Anyone buys that Costco external drive removing the drive from the enclosure will VOID any warranty , So make sure that the drive works WELL before you tear into the case .

I know myself that I voided my warranty but I had used the drive for days & all was well . The 2nd drive will be used/abused for at least a couple of weeks before I tear that one open as a precaution . the next build of mine is a few weeks off & I will use the intact one everyday till then. Cover your butt ,make sure a external works well before you open up a case on one of these drives.
I wanted to make sure that everyone understands what is at risk ..

FYI I think most external drives fail because of the crappy enclosure that they are in. Those things get hot.

And of course you are bumping jostling a mechanical drive using it as an external many times which doesn't help as well.

Yeah the ventilation on that external was really bad , It would get real warm real fast .
the only shock absorbers were 4 hard small rubber blocks

When I was searching for a guide on how to tear apart my Staples external that's what I was reading as well. Apparently that enclosure causes some sort of clicking noise in some cases, although its not the click of death.

Same here! I previously posted that the guide I saw about what was inside them said to switch to GPT and then format when using it internally. But, I believe that is only if you want to put your OS and boot off of it? Otherwise, just leave it as MBR- is that correct?

I just reformatted them as the 2nd drive & the lead drive as my SSD,any D/L's ,saves are directed toward the 3TB . haven't yet set-up the HTPC stuff yet (got a Wad of reading to do ) & want to figure out how to manage my DirecTV as well , before preceding
building 3 identical HTPC/Power PC's , living room ,bedroom, my office
the bedroom HTPC/powerPC must also be totally handicap usable/functional for the wife as she can't sit at a desk anymore more due to a bad back . So that has to be set-up for media center / office that she can work & watch movies on the same rig. The reason all the PC's must have wireless/Bluetooth access as well .Hope to have a andriod remote tablet control each . Lots of research to be done by me . I know nothing about tablets & the like ...

Assassin, I need a hand...

My old HTPC is in need of an upgrade. I just bought another Intel i3 2100 and Asus P8Z68-M Pro Absolutely love this combo. But have never upgraded a computer before like this. I usually build them from scratch and install an OS.

So my question is Can I upgrade my HTPC with a new mobo and CPU without loosing all my programs?? Basically using the same C drive.

Thanks,

Xzener

That's a tough one. You can try but I would worry about old registry settings being wrong, drivers incorrect, etc.

I know it takes longer but I am a proponent of re-installs for the OS when adding major hardware pieces, cloning a hard drive to SSD, etc.

If you use my guides this is one of the perks. You can use all my links and steps to cut down your time dramatically during a reinstall.

Update on my recent migration from Media Center Master to Metabrowser.

So far, so good. I love the functionality of it. It doesn't rename anything that I don't want it to rename, and it doesn't use up unnecessary CPU when idle. I like the metadata fetching options a whole lot more. You can use it to extract thumbnails from tv shows that may not have thumbs on thetvdb.com, and also can fetch mediainfo for TV episodes.

The customer asked us not to disclose any financial details of his build.

Hey assassin - I saw you got an HDHR prime -- are you using WMC/MB for livetv/movies mostly. Or have you ventured into the XBMC pvr/liveTV build? Just curious if you have, how they are? Thanks .
