Ok...

So with a lot of help from this thread and some knowledge I've gleaned over the years, I have been able to build my son a general purpose PC for his light gaming needs that will also double as his HTPC.

We bought one of the AVS remotes from Newegg...the one mentioned in that awesome build a few pages back that I commented on...quoted above...and I'm confused.

He has a Harmony 700 but alas, I have to admit I'm at a loss getting the Harmony to work as an MCE remote. There is a lot of shame here as I normally ford through the testing phases of this type stuff but he came up with the $24.99 before I did thus I have to research for him.

What type of device do I add to make the HTPC work with the Harmony? I know I'm missing something extremely simple...

Help?

It can play all your videos.

The interface isn't pretty but it will play all your HD files. They only cost about $90 or so.

You need a USB IR receiver for the harmony which you should have got with the remote that you bought.

The harmony should have pre-set setting for media center somewhere in the guide.

That's about it as far as I know to get it up and running.

Yeah...we have the new remote working fine. We just want to use the Harmony instead along with the IR receiver and I'm ashamed to admit it's kicking my butt.

Found this in a quick search:

The actual Logitech Harmony software supports the MCE remote, you can select it as a device in Computer -> Media Center PC -> Microsoft and then just enter "Microsoft Media Center"; however I am not sure if these are the exact names of the device list items in your version of the Harmony software, since I use the application in German.

I set my Harmony 700 up in this way with using an RC6 capable IR receiver, which works like a charm on Win7 x64.

Here's another one...

I'm assuming that anything on ESPN's bloated front page was going to give me issues at this point. I didn't realize how many flash adds, links, ect. ect. were twirling in the background. So I fired up a less bloated page and got much, much better results. Here they are:

Chrome

Firefox4

Both videos played smooth, but in my non-scientific test, Chrome stayed stead in the high 50's to low 60's where as Firefox 4 stayed in the mid to high 40's. Probably splitting hairs, but Firefox seems to handle playing flash much better than Chrome. Either way, ESPN's bloated front page seems to be a problem with this setup, too many flash adds constantly refreshing.

Exactly, I was getting high cpu usage just browsing the damn page, that's why I just opted for the XBMC plug-in it runs way better there than in the browser. In my screenshot I was using IE9 as I got better results than on Chrome. One more thing to check....go to any flash video and right click on it and go to adobe settings, make sure gpu acceleration is checked. For Chrome type in the address bar about:flags scroll down to GPU accelerated canvas and enable as it's not enabled by default.

Weel, ordered the memoy and OS tonight. Here is my final parts list:
Case - nMEDIAPC Black Aluminum / Acrylic / Steel HTPC 5000B - 69.99 at Newegg
P/S - Antec EarthWatts Green EA-380D Green 380W - 39.99 at Amazon
MOBO - ASUS LGA 1156/ Intel H55/ DDR3 2133OC- mATX Motherboard P7H55-M Pro – 99.99 at Amazon
Processor - Intel i3 Processor i3-540 3.06GHz – 119.99 at Amazon
HD - Western Digital 2 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD20EARS – 79.99 at Amazon
Memory - G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-4GBNQ – 44.99 at Newegg
OS – Windows 7 upgrade family 3 pack – 123.99 at Amazon
I am sure I am missing something(not just the MOBO that is on backorder). It looks pretty much like the suggested parts on the first page, but with other reading I have done, a great parts list recommendation.
Thanks to all who responded to my questions, and I am sure I will have more. Can't wait for everything to get here.
A great thread that I am glad that I caught at the begining!

Don't need a wireless adapter as when I had my home built 5 yrs ago I had cat5 and cable run to each room and into a central panel in my closet.
The USB adapter? Would that be to control the HTPC from a remote? That is one of the things I was going to ask.

The new sandy bridge processors (like I3-2010) are able to send their hdmi signal wirelessly :

No I meant a USB wireless adapter. There are a ton of HTPC remotes out there. I would do a search and see which one you like best. I just ordered a pretty cool RF remote with built in mouse but don't have it just yet. Otherwise I use the Rosewill mouse+keyboard that I have on the front page for now. You'll need a keyboard and mouse to get it all setup obviously (it IS a PC after all).

CAT5 is sweet to have. I have it in my home as well. Love it.

Looks like you are all set!

I submitted this issue to amd about not having the gpu accelerate espn.com in that other forum I was talking about earlier, where you submit bug reports and problems. So I'm gonna be optimistic an say when they release the official version of 11.4, thing's will continue to improve. About the sportscenter clips, bummer.....don't worry this XBMC developers are geniuses, I'm sure there will be a solution to that soon.

I've been noticing this a lot since watching on my new Htpc. I'm use to watching it on a few dif set top boxes. What exactly makes the picture better on them? Anyone know?

It looks VERY promising and I am pretty excited about it. It also has 2 way communication with WMC and I can control music being played via the LCD screen on the remote when the TV is off.

Its about twice as expensive though. Its RF which to me is a big deal.

I will keep everyone posted.

With pics of course.

Are you talking about the gyration air music?

Here's a pic of that remote that I bought. I got it from ebay for $50.

I can post more information if anyone is interested in getting one.

Also there are manufacturer refurbished Logitech Harmony 700s on ebay right now for $60.

Mediabrowser users:

Titan was released today which is supposed to be a major upgrade. Can't wait to download it and try it out.

Media Browser 2.3.1 (Titan) Released

Okay, two weeks late again, but Titan is out and available on the download page. Before I go any further (cuz half of you probably never got past the title before you started downloading) please be sure to follow the upgrade procedure outlined in the changelog if you are upgrading from a previous version. It should make your life much simpler.

This version has lots of bug fixes and other polish work and should have even more performance improvements. Some highlights:

Item paths are no longer subject to case sensitivity. This means that things like shared playstates and shortcuts to items should sync up properly now.
Logging is now enabled by default, you can change the level of severity of messages that are logged and logfiles are cleaned out periodically (default 30 days).
Lots of changes and improvements surrounding the mediainfo provider. It should no longer cause the refresh process to hang up, will now support analyzing folder rips of both DVDs and BDs (service only), and should just generally play a bit nicer with the system.
Better organization and display of plug-ins in the configurator
Direct entry points should now work properly with our single instance functionality.
Plug-in added collections (like music and trailers) should now refresh properly in the service
Items blocked by parental controls should now also refresh properly in the service.

Also, Titan coincides with the release of the new Media Browser Store. This is a change in the way we are handling supporters and we think it will be much better for everyone going forward.

Be sure to check out the improved MB Trailers plug-in and the highly-anticipated Media Browser Intros plug-in as well. Intros has the standard 14-day trial period so you can try it out before you register it. It is brand new and fairly complicated so, if you find issues, please post them out here so we can get them addressed ASAP.

As always, thanks mucho to my tester group and all the other folks who make MB happen.

Changelog: Media Browser 2.3.1 (codename Titan)

This topic highlights some of the most important new features and bug fixes. These are the release notes for:

Media Browser 2.3.1 (codename Titan) [March 29th 2011]

Official Announcement

Titan contains many bugfixes and more enhancements. See details below.
Important Upgrade Procedure:

If you are upgrading from a previous release of Media Browser, please follow these steps to ensure a smooth experience:

Install Titan
Enter the Configurator (you can simply leave “Configure Initial Settings” checked at the end of the install and it will open automatically).
Note if you receive a message that any incompatible plug-ins were removed. You will need to re-install current versions of these plug-ins before entering MB for the first time. These plug-ins include Media Info Provider and High Quality thumbnails. If you do not re-install compatible versions before entering MB, you will probably have to run a manual refresh with all options checked even after the automatic re-build.
Install current versions of any plug-ins you need to and check their configurations. Check for updates to all of your plug-ins – even if they weren’t identified as incompatible.
Exit the configurator. The service should re-start itself but, if for some reason, it does not, re-start it manually.
Enter Media Browser. You should receive a message that a library re-build has been started in the service. You can go ahead and enter MB, but your library metadata will be incomplete until the re-build completes. This re-build cannot be cancelled.
If the rebuild fails for any reason, run a manual refresh from the service with all options checked.
If you still have issues, please post in the tracker.

OK, placed my order for my HTPC parts. Should get everything in a few days. I was going to use the Crucial 64GB SSd for the OS but no one has it in stock. Upon further research the item has been discontinued. After thinking it over I really don't need it since the HTPC will be on 24/7 and the only benefit is when I'm rebooting the machine. Instead I'll partition 100GB from the 2 TB drive for the OS.

I'd go with 50-60GB for the OS. Its more than enough. I think I am in the mid 30s.

Startup, loading mediabrowser, loading folders/icons, etc.

Less noise and heat too although with the green drives this is less of a problem.

is AVSForum set up to link to an ad bouncing service or something with newegg? Every time I click a link to newegg here it's blocked by my work because it converts it to some long tracking address

During the 12hrs of Sebring that was shown only on ESPN3 (the entire race) created this very lite strobe-light effect with SecondRunTV 2.0. I assumed that Windows Media Center whenever it has to use a web site, uses IE. I had IE8 but seldom used it, only for things like Windows Update. I was curious, so I downloaded IE9, went back to WMC interface, booted up SecondRunTV and navigated to the replay of the race. Played much better! No effect just smooth, it works even better in Google Chrome, so MS had some catching up to do.

As for CPU use, I don't have any. During the entire race and even NBA game last Thur, the CPU activity is barely flashing. All Flash video is off-loaded with the current ATI video drivers and latest Flash 10.2.

Yet another reason to consider AMD hardware....
