volume differences

So i am finally getting the HT system up and running..watched a few movies and noticed one thing
When I listen to Music I set at about -20 to -15 db...more than loud enough for me..quite loud actually but when I watch a movie I could set at at -10 or -5db without it being overwhelming..Is that normal for there to be big differences. Sorry if this seem obvious to most but I am very new to all of this...my receiver is the pioneer VSX-32

Yes, movies are mixed at a specific level called Reference Level so they are fairly constant (but not always exactly the same when you adjust your volume control). Concerts, and all other media, are mixed at whatever level the person doing the mixing wants so you never know what to expect.

thanks sptrout

I haven't had this receiver for very long and even less watching movies( 2 movies to be exact) so I wasn't sure if they might have been an receiver issue.
Always learning!

If you have calibrated levels at reference, which is 0dBFS, then a movie volume of -10 to -5dB would likely be uncomortably loud. You don't need to calibrate at reference as long as all speakers output to the same level at the main listening position. But, there's no reason to not do the calibration at reference.

I haven't calibrated levels at reference...didn't know that until now
Do you have any links about calibrating at reference? I certainly have much to learn! I will; do some searching myself for info but if you have anything reliable that would help
I don't see anything in my manual about that...it is pretty basic...set volume at a comfortable listen level and activate MCACC

I'd assume that MCACC would run at reference. But, I've never used it myself, so perhaps not. On receivers with master volume scales that run from slightly above 0dB to well below that, you would set the master volume to 0, which is quite loud, and do the calibration there. Test tones usually run at -20 or -30dB, so the tones are not overly loud.
