Epson 8700 sloppy lens shift & drifting

I have 8 hours on my Epson 8700 and the picture is fantastic. But the lens shift knobs are very, VERY sloppy , and very hard to fine tune. And i notices the shift is drifting to the left and down. After 8 hours it has moved 5" . Any other owners having this problem? Is this something I must live with?

Yes it's sloppy. If you adjust UP to it's final spot it has wiggle room to drift down (the actual wheel). If you adjust DOWN to your final position the wheel is tight towardsnthe down side...if that makes sence

I've seen that with the Sony Hs51-51A-60, HW10 and the JVC RS2; the RS2 seemed to hold the position better.

What is above the projector (assuming ceiling mounted)? I wonder if the mount you have is shaking as people above are walking, and causing it to gradually shift...

It's a spare bedroom above in the back rear corner of the house. Yes it is ceiling mounted. If I had to guess it would be the dual 12" subs I'm running. It's like there is no resistance on the shift wheels at all , I can rock them back and forth nearly a full inch without moving the picture at all. There seems to be no positive locking mechanism , or worm type gear etc. What is supposed to keep the guts from moving inside? My guess is even as quiet as the fan is the slight vibration from it just being on could cause it to move. Why cant they put a locking screw or something , as so when you have it dialed in , you could just simply lock it down. Like i said the picture is amazing ,very bright, crystal clear . and can not hear it run while a movie is playing. But dang those shift wheels

I have an 8100 and the ONLY thing I'm disapointed in (other than the fact it's not an 8700UB) is the sloppy lens shift. I think they use the same lens shift on all their PJs. The locking screw is a great idea, seems like an easy fix.

Anyone at Epson listening?

I have about 15 hours on my new 8700. What I have learned is that you need to:

1) adjust the left /right positioning first.
2) position the image vertically so that it is above where you would actually like it.
3) lower the image so that it is only inches from being in place.
4) finally, lightly tap the zoom/focus rings downward to remove any slack.

Actually, the projector I received is pretty good at holding its position, and in the 15hrs of use I have never noticed it shifting on me. However, it is shelf mounted against the back of my theater, and not ceiling mounted, although I don't think this would make much of a difference.

Like most owners of the 8700, I find the picture this projector creates is absolutly amazing, and feel it is worth the extra effort the lens shift wheels create.

I have the same complaint about my 6500. Great picture, but the lens shift mechanism feels like it was made by Fisher-Price.

My first unit drifted slowly over time, but I got a green bar on that one and sent it in for replacement. The new one doesn't drift over time as badly, but the mechanism is still very sloppy.

If I had to pick a flaw for a projector, I guess sloppy lens shift is better than exploding lamps or dust blobs.

Why don't you call up Epson and try to get it replaced or fixed, if it's still under warranty?

It's definitely still under warranty, Just trying to see if it's something all the 8700's have first.

Mandtra, I have the exact problem with my 8350. Called Epson, had new projector next day. New unit has same slop on adjustment wheels....and I now have a new projector with same problem. I suppose it is a design flaw, I can hold my finger on it when the subs hit and no vert drop, but it is the ONLY issue I have with this projector....GREAT picture. Post up if you find a fix.

I got my 8700 a few days ago and i notice there was a problem with the lense shift... i moved the projector to clean the shelf and put it back up and it started giving me problems with the lense shift, like roller does not want to move back (how i had it before) i can feel the tension but any harder then I might brake it. Don’t know what to do.
