I don't have another BD player. Yes ps3 connected to Internet and fw is updated . I can't figure it out

I assume other discs work in your PS3...correct?

What does it do or not do?

Does it load the disc and not navigate?

Does it simply fail to load?

Did you try taking a Microfiber Cloth and Cleaning the disc? Look at the play side surface of the disc for fingerprints, scratches, etc.

We have not had one single report of a failure to play in a PS3.

I found this thread online about PS3 Playback issues. However, I would not lean towards thinking your player has an issue if this is the only disc you are having issues with.

The only thing I can think of is a scratched or damaged disc. If cleaning the disc does not solve the issue, I am going to guess it is a damaged disc.

Other disks do work.

It it brand new I took it out the package so no scratches at all. In the dashboard under video when I put it in it shows the name if the disk and the Disney wow logo.

I click that to load the disk the screen goes black and nothing comes up. I cant even hit the middle ps3 button . I have no access to anything on the ps3 unless I eject the disk.

It's like my tv isn't picking it up as well. I tried other disks rhey work fine. It's like my tv isn't picking up the source on just this disk.

I know very weird problem that's why I posted because I couldn't find any info on it

I just checked our system that has a PS3 (Grand-Kids Drug) the WOW disc worked as intended, My guess is the same as what Rich has stated, Dirty, Scratched or Bad disc, have you tried it on one of your friend's PS3's?

GO GIANTS...

I will try when I get a chance thanks will let you know
post #249 of 580
Yes, it works in my PS3 as well.

How long are you giving it to load?

The WOW Disc uses the entire on-board memory to load as specified by the Blu-ray Profile 2.0 Specification for BD Players. Depending on the BD Player, it can take a minute or two for the disc to fully load.

I still believe it is most likely an isolated disc issue. Possibly some unreadable sector on the disc due to a manufacturing defect. Where did you purchase the disc? I would try exchanging the disc to see if that soles the problem for you.

Please let me know if exchanging the disc solves the problem. I have one uneducated long-shot theory on a Hardware related issue ... but it is a highly unlikely scenario as it would probably affect ALL discs that you are trying to play.

Using the Wow disk the beginner contrast i can not attain, no matter how low or how high, the stripes on the right hand side to show. I can get all 3 bars on the left to appear but nothing on the right, why would that happen? (it is the same case for 2 LCD tvs)

Same for the beginner brightness as well, can only get the bars on the right side to appear but not on the left no matter how high or how low i set the brightness.

i mean, it's fine, i just use the advanced and adjust until just the visible stars are visible on each, and none of the rest are visible but why would i see only 1 set of bars on the beginner video?

thanks.

(i don't have blu ray, and both tv's are brand new).

One thing I don't like about the WoW disk is that you cannot adjust color AND tint at the same time with the blinking squares like I can do on AVIA. It makes it difficult at times, so I just put in AVIA and use the supplied blue filter. Please correct me if I'm wrong!
PS. @ Mr. Casey,
Is it true that my system 'could' sound better if I disengage Audyssey and calibrate with an SPL meter??? My room does have challenges, and was wondering what this would sound like without room correction. many thanks in advance!

Without using a very expensive Meter, Pattern Generator, and Software ... Color Bars are a reliable standard that has been used for years.

Also, Color and Tint are two (2) different adjustments. Therefore, we have included two (2) different A/V Tools with WOW specific to each adjustment.

The WOW Disc is designed to be very accurate. The patterns are in very fine increments and do a good job of getting your HDTV Calibrated.

We also spent an enormous amount of time and effort getting the blue filter to be the most accurate available.

I have not looked at the Avia Disc for years ... but I would go by end results over anything else in the end.

I do know that the WOW disc is VERY easy to use ... regardless of having two (2) tests specific for calibrating Color & Tint.

I recommend you try both discs and compare your settings. I would be curious if they are different from each other. I know the WOW disc is very accurate. This is what I focused on when producing the disc.

-------

Yes, I am saying you can achieve better results using a manual calibration. You should go in and set your distances manually ... then set your levels manually, and subwoofer manually using the WOW disc.

I am not a fan of equalization or any Auto Room Calibration systems. You may also get some phase errors or other distortions due to reports from these systems.

Your ear is a FAR better instrument for setting up your Home Theater than any of these Auto Calibration gadgets.

Try it and see....it will cost you an investment in to an SPL Meter.

Hi,

You are using a DVD Player?

If I am understanding you correctly, you can calibrate properly using the Beginner but you cannot push the contrast past the point where bars show up that should not be visible when calibrated...

... but you can push the Advanced setting to show stars beyond ideal white ...

... is that correct?

It is possible that your HD Panel, especially if it is new, will NOT let you clip whites. For example, my Panasonic ST-30 Plasma in a Guest Bedroom, which is professionally calibrated with 20K plus worth of gear, is set to 100% contrast. That is the correct setting and I cannot exceed it ... which prevents me from clipping white.

However, my Pioneers can bot clip white if I turn them up past the calibrated setting..which is nowhere near 100%.

Many of the newer HD Panel Manufacturers have started limiting the adjustment range of certain controls. Their thinking is ... why let the consumer clip white ... we will just limit the HD Panel controls so they cannot do this. I think this is actually a pretty good idea.

The other possibility, is that you need to calibrate your DVD Player. Part of the ISF Training is to make people aware of the fact that DVD & BD Players may not be correct from the Factory. I do not believe all of them can be adjusted, but many of the better ones can be.

For example, my Cambridge Azur 751BD player, which is really just an Oppo-BDP-93 with a substantial Audio Upgrade, was -10 clicks off for Contrast. That is a huge adjustment.

None of my Oppo BDP-93 Players have this issue. They are usually spot on or with 1 click from the factory. Why Cambridge messed with the Oppo Firmware I have no idea...but they did.

As another recent example, I could not get a Pioneer KRP-500M Calibrated using WOW. Fortunately, the HD Panel was connected to a Pioneer BD Player which had calibration controls. Once I adjusted the Contrast, I was able to get the Pioneer calibrated. It needed several clicks of adjustment to be correct.

As long as you can get your TV properly calibrated, you are good. If you cannot push or clip whites, it is probably by design for your specific HDTV.

Cool, thanks. I think it is the TV not allowing white clipping, because on the pre-set settings contrast is set at or close to, irrc, 100. Both small 2011 models, so it makes sense. thanks.

Ok here is a update..

I restored the ps3 and still nothing.. Both of the disks do not work in the ps3 for some reason. ( I am guessing bad disks like you all said. ) I bought it off of amazon so I will try to exchange... It is weird because in the ps3 dashboard it shows the disk logo of what I have in.. So it is sorta of recognizing the disk.. But when i go to fully load the disk I hear it loading and nothing ever comes up.

I appreciate the troubleshooting and will let you know for sure when I get a new disk hopefully sometime soon.
if you did the new ps3 update this is the problem. something about this update has messed up playing this disc. i tried mine just before i updated it worked fine, i did the ps3 firmware update now it says the disc is unplayble.
Interesting so this could be the problem maybe I should factory restore my whole system I don't have anything saved that is important . I contacted amazon and they are sending me out a new disk . I will have it tomorrow

I just did the update on my FAT with 2 USB, disk works fine. Will try my original FAT and the slim later today.

UPDATE - It's fine on my SLIM and my original 4-USB Wireless FAT after the update as well......

Hi all, I'm a little confused about some of the instructions for the advanced brightness section for adjusting my LCD display and I had some questions. Here's a relevant excerpt from the guide:

Quote:

Adjust the Brightness control of the display so the “invisible” test
pattern elements are extinguished against the background. Only
the elements marked “visible” should be seen. There is also a set
of “ideal” elements that should be on the verge of being visible.

The only thing really confusing me are the "ideal black" elements. The instructions seem to suggest that the ideal black elements should be faintly visible, which is to say slightly brighter, than the background, rather than blending into the background. Is this a correct assessment of the directions?

I guess I'm confused because, had I not been told differently, I would have just assumed that the ideal black should blend into the black background much like the invisible elements should, but, perhaps I'm wrong on that.

Any guidance would be appreciated.
The Stars are designed to move around to make them easier to see. The stars tend to become difficult to see if they remain static. Moving them allows you to see the leading edges so you can tell if they are still visible or not.

You should do this is a dark room ... with no glare on the screen ... it will yield the best results.

Watch the leading edge of the star as it moves if you are having difficulty seeing them. You should be able to see the leading edge if it is visible against the background.

For those stars that are supposed to be visible, you want to see them ... for those that should not be visible, it is not OK to see the the stars.

This is for the A/V Tools in the ADVANCED Section of the WOW Disc.

BRIGHTNESS: For Brightness, you want the Top center "Ideal" Black Star to be BARELY visible ... and I mean barely visible ... against the background. The "Invisible Black Stars" on the test pattern should disappear in to the background. The Brightness chart shows a ramp or range .... so the "Visible Black Stars" above "Ideal Black" will be visible in varying degrees against the background.

CONTRAST: For Contrast, you want the "Visible White Stars" to be visible without fading in to the background. If you start losing the "Visible White Stars" your monitor is clipping which is not optimal. In many cases, you will be able to see the above white stars on the test pattern. This is quite normal on many HDTV Panels. The best setting in this case is to turn contrast up to the maximum possible level without losing the visible white stars on the right side of the WOW test pattern. You may actually find that 100% Contrast still does not clip make the visible white stars vanish on the WOW test pattern. This would be considered your optimal calibrated setting.

On some HDTV's, you may notice a limited range of adjustment. This is by design on the part of the TV manufacturer. These limits avoid pushing the HDTV far beyond ideal levels. Do not be concerned about the inability to exceed limits indicated on the WOW test patterns, your HDTV will calibrate perfectly within the given range of adjustment.

Also, you may want to check your BD Player to see if it has Picture or Video settings. I know that all of my BD Players and my PS3 required calibration to get the output calibrated.

C-NET has the recommended settings for a PS3. Here is the link:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10022389-1.html

I hope that information is useful to you. Let me know if have success calibrating your projector.

There is only One (1) "Ideal Black" Star element. The top center Black Star is the "Ideal Black" element. This is the the "Black Star" the instructions refer to. This should be barely visible..and I mean almost gone to the point where you can barely see it at all. I push it to the point where it is almost questionable if I see it ... but a hint of the "Ideal Black Star" remains visible under close observation.

There are additional "Ideal Black" boxes as well. These can be helpful for some people but I find the "Ideal Black Star" easiest to use myself.

No...it does not appear to have the frequency range required. You need a Meter capable with a "C Weighted" option.

http://www.radioshack.com/graphics/u...2055_PM_EN.pdf

As long as you use an SPL Meter with C Weighting, which requires a reasonably flat response across a minimum frequency range, you are OK.

Are you saying the 2nd disc in the same package does not work either? That is HIGHLY unusual. They are manufactured on different lines at different times. This now makes me suspect your PS3.

However, exchange the disc and see what happens. If you are still have trouble, let me know. There may be an issue with your PS3 ... but I have no idea what it could be. The fact that both discs do not play makes no sense.

The 2nd discs is a VERY simple disc with VERY simple authoring. There is no BD live or any BD authoring complexity associated with that disc.

Keep me posted please.

The moving stars just confuse my eyes,I know the movement is suppose to be easier to prevent fatigue.I used the beginners section & my settings where the same as the settings the disk had me to use.I got the settings from Projector central for my Pany 4000 which in my very dark ht works well.Ill try the advance again & see what happens, its just hard to figure which stars your suppose to see.My 57 y/0 eyes arent that good anymore but I do where glasses!!
Yes, static indicators tend to blend in to the background ... so we put movement on the patterns. It is a tremendous help compared to a static pattern. Once you understand what to look for, it is actually very simple.

Ignore the fact that the moving stars or patterns block other objects in the background as they move...that is not what you should be looking for. The idea is to look for any indication that you can see the invisible black star against the ideal black background. It takes a little concentration, but it should be very easy.

Hope that helps.

Updating my status. Got a new Disney disk and same problem. I'm in the process of doing a full system restore on my ps3 we will see if that works
post #270 of 580
Yes, it is clearly a PS3 issue ... could be a software or a hardware issue.

I do know that the WOW disc uses a LOT of the built-in memory ... pretty much all of it ... when it loads. The disc has a lot going on.

In fact, when you go to the section with Goofy, we actually have to unload the memory to make room to load the Goofy section and vice versa when leaving the Goofy section.

I am wondering if there is a way to do a memory test when you do the full system restore. If possible, I would do so just to be sure.
