The decision to drop 60" and 65" makes perfect sense.

Outside of niche customers. the only people that buy these DLP's are doing so because it is significantly cheaper than comparably sized LCD/Plasmas. I don't hear anyone here complaining about the lack of 42" DLP's because they would cost the same price as LCD/Plasma.

The prices of LCD/Plasma has been coming down dramatically at the high end and as the price comes down on any size to come close to DLP, Mitsu can't stay and fight - they have to abandon and go to where LCD/Plasma aren't.

Over the past few weeks Best Buy has had a Sharp 60" LCD that has been as low as $1100 with discounts and 55" sets (which certainly compete with 60" DLP's) have been spending more time below $1k. Few regular consumers would pay close to $1k for a 60" DLP when they can have a 55" flat panel for same price or 60" for a couple hundred more.

Moving up in price, Panasonic 65" plasma S2 can be had for $1700. Mitsu can't stick around and watch sales disappear. They're headed for the only place left where the price point of LCD's can't compete. A big issue for Mitsu will now be the new Sharp 70" LCD's. The cheapest one is already being offered for pre-sale by Sears below $3k and it will be available in a few weeks.

For a regular consumer they need to gain a huge size advantage relative to price in order to buy a RPTV. If these Sharp's fall below $2500 by next year, I think you will see Mitsu move away even from their 73" size. My prediction - Mitsu discontinues 73" within 2 years. They'll retreat back to 82" and above, the problem is that is a small market. Personally, given the choice, I would take a 72" LCD at similar pricing to a 82" DLP.

The 2011 models haven't even begun to roll out yet so why would you expect the 92" to be out.

what you mean? the 92" isnt 2011 model?

Yes it is but traditionally in electronics new models don't begin to appear until April or later. The 92'" may not be the first 2011 model to appear. It's not always a good thing to see things come out early, I'd rather see it later with the bugs worked out.

Indeed the 92 inch will be spectacular and I'm saving to get one. I've had the 65 inch 837 Diamond DLP since 2009 and it's my favorite tv of all time and I've owned a top of the line LCD HDTV. My DLP stomped and is still stomping my old LCD in every aspect. Especially in the long run aspect. Replace a bulb or replace a dingy dull looking LCD tv? A 100 buck bulb is better than hundreds on a new tv. I bought my tv as a test dummy to see how it compared to LCD and Plasma and I am a DLP only buyer now. So with that said, I was wanting to get the 82 inch DLP but technical difficulties arouse so now I get a chance to dive into the 92 inch instead. Now I know, I know that I could grab an 82 inch cheap offline but I'm smart. I know that one of those 82 inchers I buy is most likely going to be a return or tried and tester then returner because how else are all those sites going to say returns excepted and with that, what do you think they do with the returns? Pass em along until someone stick with the cheapest. So I for one am going to buy the 92 inch at first retail price that way I know it is not used and abused and returned.

I'm pretty sure it's against the law to sell a opened return/refurb used item as new. So it's very unlikely that will happen unless it's human error.

Hell, try that same TV for only $1700 shipped!!!!

It's been incredibly difficult for me to pass on this deal the last week or so.

I'd buy it as I finally have some money saved up for a new set, but the new models should be out very soon, so I'll just continue to wait and see what's new.

The new models will most likely be announced sometime this month, but we probably won't see them shipping till June or so.

Exactly. When more's known I may at that time jump on that sale price I mentioned earlier if there's not much improvement on this year's models.

I had been debating about waiting myself. But I looked at recommended viewing distances and decided that the 92" model would probably be too big. Then I saw Amazon's price on the 82838 dip below $3k last week and decided to go for it (the price already went back up). The 2011 models might have an integrated 3D IR emitter, but I suspect there won't be much else for meaningful differences. So far, I'm very pleased with the 82838 (which replaced a 65835).

That's good info thanks. My TV is a year older than yours, the 65736. Back when I bought it I had really wanted a 73" but back then price difference was easily $700-800 more and I just couldn't stomach that much more for such little real estate. I love my TV I just wish it was bigger. My next set will definitely be the 73 or an 82 since they're getting so cheap now. I'll then move my old 65 into the MB.
Right now all I care about is PQ basically. They keep adding features and stuff that I could care less about.

Agreed - I could do without the sound bar feature they added to the 838's and have absolutely no interest in more streaming apps being added as time goes on. My PS3, Oppo BDP-95, HTPC, XBOX 360, etc. collectively have all the streaming I can stomach and more - I don't need to have those features in yet another device.

My guess is that for the 2011 models, they'll add integrated 3D IR emitters (as i mentioned earlier) at least to the top of the line Diamond models, use a more powerful bulb for at least the 92" model, probably add another streaming app or 2, and we've heard rumors that they may be using a different type of screen (though we've really only heard that about the 92" model). The rumor mill seems to have said that they won't be using a different DLP chip or use 2 for better quality. What else can they realistically be adding?

That said, the 838 seems to be a somewhat substantial upgrade over the 835. Even with the larger screen (which should only make the picture look worse, all other things being equal), I've noticed a fairly substantial improvement in picture quality. Maybe they'll surprise us and the 2011 models will have some useful improvements and not just stuff to add to the marketing literature. But based on my experience and the rumors we've heard, I don't see any compelling reason to wait unless it's for the 92" model and you have a seating arrangement and room that can make proper use of it.

IMO you need at least 90" to achieve movie theater cinema experience the projectors provide. Anything smaller will just be like a regular tv...

so no go until 92" comes out, hopefully 100" is in the works for next year.

I'm pretty sure you can get used to anything, too.

I think the 'theater' experience is only unique because it's so rare.

If you watched all your tv at the local theater, you'd have to start making trips to the local imax pretty soon.

Well, any update? I've been on the fence between the Sharp 70" LCD and these Mitsu's. Just saw the Sharp at Sears and while the PQ is great, it just doesn't blow me away with it's size. Looks like I will end up going either 82" or 92" Mitsu. Any confirmation yet regarding the bulb improvement??

As a rule Mitsu has their line show in the third or fourth week of April. Not much longer to find out. One nice thing is that once announced they usually have at least one model available for immediate delivery including all of the specs. The bad news is that usually they start with their smallest offering leaving their largest for last.

Since Mitsubishi used 3D glasses from Samsung (which were IR last year) do you think the new TVs will use bluetooth like Samsung is doing this year?

My Samsung bit the dust earlier than I would have liked and I just got a Mitsubishi WD-73638 as a replacement to check out Mitsubishi.

Without the LED lighting of the Samsung, I do see the rainbow effect when I move by eyes too quickly especially in dark scenes with bright highlights, etc. Never knew if I would see the rainbow effect with the spinning color wheel and now I know. Actually not a deal breaker for me. Price/Screen Size still win. The 73" makes my 56" look small and Avatar big.

There is some screen sag on the 73" size but the image is straight and focused. Also, the silk screen effect is much more pronounce on the Mits than it was on the Samsung. Again, not a deal breaker for me. I would hope the 92" doesn't have too much screen sag.

ARC (Audio Return channel) on at least one of the HDMI inputs would be great. It really would be nice to finally retire the old 12' digital audio cable once and for all (used a 12' optical cable with the Samsung).

I do like that the Mitsubishi accepts 1080/24p and other formats that even though it may not display them, at least I don't get "Invalid Format" or "Your HDTV doesn't support...", etc. My older Samsung wouldn't take anything other than 60Hz so no DirecTV Cinema HD, etc.

The 3D on the WD-73638 looks great to me (my first 3D display): free of any ghosting or flicker. I'm sure it's safe to say the 738's, 838's and the 92" will look even better. Movies, games and shows keep must of the 3D depth "inside the screen" and must things that pop out are just a few feet at the most and not in your face which I actually appreciate more. The 3D adapter for the WD-73638 is a slick little box but I admit I wouldn't miss it with the 92".

Side note: Crysis 2 for the PS3 is in 3D but just starting out in the game I've seen severe geometry pop-in and other graphical glitches all not related to 3D even after a 4GB install.

Sorry, I'm new to rear projections... what is screen sag?

The screens are flexible and are only supported along the edges. Larger sizes can have more sagging. It can be seen using test patterns, Excel on a PC, some news programs, thin black bars on the sides, etc.

I have absolutely no screen sag on my 73".

That's not due to the screen physically sagging. That's just poor geometry due to a tiny image being projected through multiple angles and an imperfect lens. As a default, these sets have geometry correction turned on, which electronically distorts the image in an attempt to correct the geometric imperfections created by the projection path. But distortions aren't completely consistent from set to set, so geometry correction doesn't always make the image perfect. Furthermore, geometry correction reduces the resolution because geometry correction by nature prevents 1:1 pixel mapping. I have it turned off. I prefer having 1:1 pixel mapping over better geometry, as the geometry issues aren't apparent in most typical content.

What I'm talking about is the screen itself with outward and/or inward bulges that can cause straight lines on the video to appear not straight. Simply applying gentle pressure on an outward bulge can straighten everything out: of course it will not stay in place. I could take pictures but surely this has been covered on the AVS Forum over the years regarding rear projection sets of large size. Maybe someone can chime in on how to adjust the screens, I've never tried but its always been there. That's one advantage "flat" screens have over rear projection sets, along with little to no over-scan of course.

Back in '05 there was a JVC thread about taking hold of the front and "moving it around" to get things sorted. I might try it on my isolated issue with straight lines on test patterns, etc.

OK. My set was made in February and they must of used softer plastics.
