The technology is changing so fast that we really don't know how long the sets being sold today should last, but a good guess is maybe 40,000-80,000 hours. That's a decade or more in most households. Many won't die, their performance will simply slowly deteriorate. In many, if not most cases, they will become outdated and replaced for that reason long before they quit. That's exactly what happened to my previous HDTV, a 2005 rear-projection.
Of course, the quality of build is also important. The above applies to brand-name sets. Cheaper ones will be more iffy.
