Thanks for the heads up; that's great news for me as I do subscribe to VUDU and was wondering when they'd start showing movies in 3D. I'll be curious to see what they offer.
Sweet I still have 1 free rental for registering on my TV, will def ck out a 3D & see how they do with them.
What kind of noise does it make when you burst through your bandwidth cap?
I hope the Panasonic 3D players are able to output VUDU 3D content to checkerboard. That'd be great if we could rent 3D movies and watch them on the Samsung DLP.

I was thinking the same thing. That would be nice.

besides the cost, I'm curious what kind of bandwidth speed we'll need for the 3D content. I use cable internet and have a 802.11g router w/ the samsung wireless adapter connected to my 46" 3D LED TV. I have watched several HD movies through Vudu just fine, haven't even tried any of the HDX movies
post #8 of 117
I'm curious as to the vid format offered for these movies. 720p?
I have 802.11/g and as long as no one else is clogging bandwidth I've been able to watch HDX movies (which I believe are 1080p) on Vudu without any trouble. Even if they do side by side in HDX (960x1080) it should still yield a good image.

New release 3D rentals in 720p cost $5.99, and $6.99 for 1080p. Vudu charges $4.99 for new releases in standard definition. Digital 3D purchases cost $21.99, compared to $19.99 for SD. Initial titles include Bolt, Meet the Robinsons and Chicken Little.

The 3D formats will be frame compatible.

Nice, wonder what the bandwidth req will be for 1080p. So since Vudu no longer sells STB's, any purchases (not rentals) remain on the cloud...thereby subject to bandwidth limitations? Or am I wrong? It would be nice to be able to purchase and download. Not fond of the idea of keeping my library in a cloud.

Edit: Looks like they are for sale

Frame compatible means the same bandwidth as a 2D HD stream.

Oh ok thanks

Some 3D movies and trailers for upcoming movies are already up on Vudu. Most of the content is what's already available via the PSN store though getting to see some 3D trailers is nice. Drive Angry especially looks like a fun grindhouse style 3D movie.

In terms of 3D quality, it varied from title to title but overall I thought the depth and 3D pop were good, especially in the newer releases.

I'm so hoping my Oppo BDP-93 gets Vudu soon.
I just tried to watch some of the free 3D previews using my Panny BDT300 and got an error from Vudu indicating that my device does not support the 3D Vudu service. I checked the firmware and it is the latest, so wonder if a FW update will be available soon for panny devices to utilize this service.

Just did a search on vudu support forum and found this list of supported devices for 3D service:

? FUNAI (Magnavox and Sylvania) HDTVs and Blu-ray Players
? LG HDTVs and Blu-ray Players
? Mitsubishi HDTVs and Blu-ray Players
? Philips HDTVs and Blu-ray Players
? Select 2010 and 2011 Samsung HDTVs, Blu-ray Players and Blu-ray Home Theater Systems with Samsung Apps
? Sony PlayStation?3
? Toshiba HDTVs and Blu-ray Players
? VIZIO VIA HDTVs and Blu-ray Players
? Boxee Box by D-Link and Iomega TV with Boxee

Looks like Panasonic owners like myself are currently out of luck.

It apparently gets worse for BDT-100 owners with older Mits (and probably Samsung) TVs: having bought the BDT-100 for its checkerboard format output, compatible with my TV, despite the fact that 3D BD's work just great, the Vudu previews are output in SbS, so I'll need to run my BDT-100 through the adapter to use that functionality

I figured that'd probably end up being the case Panasonic would have to write a software update that converts SBS video streams to checkerboard and integrate that into their VUDU widget. On the other hand, if they did add SBS conversion support to the Panasonics (perhaps for VUDU and BD-R/DVD-R) the players would become even more glorious.

Guess I bought the wrong 3D BD player--Sony BDP570.Sony rents 3Ds on it's own Qriocity service but you have to have a PS3 to rent/view 'em. And of course Vudu is NOT one of the many services available! Looks like if you want to take advantage of Vudu's 3D you should buy just about any player BUT a Sony!

Ed

Or maybe not a Panny either.....

My PS3 vudu app keeps telling me that 3d tv not detected. Blu-rays and store purchases play fine. Anyone else able to play any of the 3d content on vudu with ps3?

FWIW, 3D playback worked just fine with the Samsung 6900 3D BluRay player, though it did do an update of the Vudu app when I first signed on last night. As such, it might be worthwhile to delete and redownload the Vudu app on the PS3 and see if that helps.

Nah it didn't work, tried deleting it twice, but i did notice that I have version 1.0 and I no there is a version 2.0, so I dont know if that makes a difference. As soon as vudu emails me I will give an update :-(

Seems kind of expensive to me if they charge $20 for a 3d movie. My TW charges only $4.99 to $6.99 each.

To own?
I guess it is $20 to own. Rentals are comparable to TW Cable.
Hmmm, does not work thru my PS3. Says it appears i got no 3d TV

Deleted Vudu.. Reinstalled, no difference. Ran thru PS3 3D setup once again also to see if that would do the trick... no Dice... Epic fail for launch, that's for sure.
