LG 2011 HDTV LCD Lineup

Here is the 2011 LG Lineup:

I am kind of overwhelmed by all the models from the 5xxx series to 7700.

Anybody know what color that bezel on the 7700 is? Is it a silver or bronze/brown? grey? heh.. It looks kind of funky and I was really hoping for more borderless glass designs.. kind of strange that they only seem to have 1 model this year and that one is the most expensive 9500.. I believe at the end of 2010 LG mentioned that they would focus more on the borderless glass designs but maybe the product pics do not reveal everything in the designs.. I can tell there are several color details on several of their models though such as the 6500 with a blue bezel.

I am looking to get an LG this year.. I just don't know if I am ready to pull the trigger on 3D but would love to have it. The 7700 specs are fantastic, but I am not crazy about that metal design..

6500 series offers passive 3D, 240hz and edge lit with local dimming

The 5700 has the 2 grey? stripes design and has passive 3D which means cheap glasses, 120hz plus it has local dimming in addition to being edge lit.

the new 5400 will probably be GREAT with games like last years 5400.. but is just edge lit without local dimming..and no 3D. Will be a great value though like the recent 5400.

I was expecting to see more Full LED sets with local dimming other than the 7700/9500 which are estimated to release in May (ouch) according to flatpanelshd

I can definitely live with edge lit and hope that their local dimming on mid tier models works well. The 5xxx and all lower end models/series will likely release March/April.

well depends if you want a higher end set with more features.

They will be releasing a similar lineup as last year as you can see, the 550 is also being re-released as a 2011 model, same features. They are introducing several entry level LED models though and several options for 3D including a lower entry 5700 series.

As of now I have my eyes on either the new 5400, the 5700 3D with local dimming, and 6500.. seems like 7700 is going to be out of my price range and the design looks funky.

the voice in the back of my head is telling to just shell out and get a 3D set because The Hobbit films will be shot in 3D

It really would be nice to test the 3D out on the LG sets but I know that Best Buy and Sears will offer no such thing.. I wonder if Magnolia will.

Basically at this point I'm not prepared to spend more than a couple hundred than the price I just paid for mine, should I return it. So I'm not expecting to go from mine to a 55" 3D LED TV for example. So I'm kind of wondering how much BETTER the 2011 version of my TV would be (I would assume it's still the 550 line). Their site says 10mil:1 contrast ratio but for LCD that doesn't seem right.

If the 550 is basically the same dang thing (I don't need apps, just lots of HDMI and USB ports which mine has) then I'm happy as can be.

I do want 3D but am glad I am waiting. Sounds like LG is already taking the next big leap.

I don't mind glasses but ones that are battery powered and heavy irritate me.

Are the new ones like the ones you get in theaters? That'd be cool, total theater experience.

Edit: Just saw "2D to 3D conversion" whaaat? What's this? Sounds great

hah great question, and yes the new LG 3D sets (Not including the 7700/9500) are passive 3D tech and not like last years active shutter glasses which were very expensive.

According to Cnet the new 5700 and 6500 series come with 4 pairs in each box and replacement should cost in the $10 range, plus third party glasses would also work.



edit: ya both the 5700 and 6500 offer 2D to 3D conversion. I have no idea how this works but have watched a youtube review of some guy talking about it regarding his samsung plasma and said it works fairly well.. again, no idea how it works with lcd and what the quality is like.

strange on their website LG lists the 5700 and has pictures but the newsroom article and Cnet articles only mention the 5600..

So with the 3D glasses you get from Real D movies at movie theaters work?

How about the glasses you get from things like at Disneyland (Captain EO, Muppets etc)?

As far as one can tell LEX-8 is presently the NANO range. Former LEX-9 is the LX9700 72 incher.

LG lineup looks very dispersed, in some lines max size is 60", but 65" can be gotten only with passive glasses. So either 60" NANO or 65" passive. NANO has big plus with matte glass, but nonano 72 incher is glossy.

So, by reading the press release, it looks like the only local dimming sets are the LZ9700, the LW6500 and the LW5600? Why no local dimming with the LW9500 or the LW7700?

That is incorrect. The LW9500 and LW7700 have Nano dimming technology which is a type/branding of local dimming.

I had heard the 72" lx9700 was also locally dimmed and backlit LED (but not nano, of course) - am I wrong?

I wonder if the 5600/5700 and 6500 are matte or glossy.. I am guessing matte by the pics I looked at..

also the 7700 is matte too right? This makes me think that LG will release a 8xxx series that is glossy late in the summer probably..

Keep in mind that they are a Scandanavian website and your simply viewing an English version and that release dates in Europe don't always match N. America as they are produced in different regions globally.

does anybody have a description of what "LED Plus technology with local dimming" means

I am looking down their models http://www.lgnewsroom.com/ces2011/vi...&post_index=89 and it looks like at the 5600 series and up you get the LED Plus tech which I guess is some improved edge lit feature.. more info on this would be swell..

Engadget reported they are supposed to be state-side this month. Not sure who to believe, I haven't seen anything from LG. I was about to buy the 55LE8500 but willing to wait a couple weeks.

Here's something interesting...

After re-reading the Press Release, I noticed that it says the LW6500 (47", 55", 65") and the LW5600 (47", 55") use the LG Cinema 3D polarized glasses and have LED local dimming, but don't use the Nano LED screen.

But the LW7700 (47" 55") and LW9500 (55" 60") do use the Nano LED screen and have 3D, but it doesn't say if it uses the active shutter glasses or the newer polarized glasses.

Lastly, the LZ9700 (72") is the biggest of the bunch, but lacks the Nano LED and uses the local dimming. Also has 3G, but still doesn't say what type of glasses.

So at this point I'd like to know what type of glasses (shutter or polarized) the LW7700/LW9500/LZ9700 uses. If they in-fact are active shutter, then does that, combined with the Nano LED, make a better image than the LW6500/LW5600 with the polarized glasses.

LZ9700 uses active glasses for 3D.

By the way has anybody out there at the CES got a chance to see the LZ9700? The question is if this set has the same shiny mirror front glass as the current Infinia line? That would make it pretty useless for daylight living room watching.

ya I am a bit surprised by the lack of actual booth/demo videos or youtube uploads of what's going on at the show.. maybe it's too early and gadget sites etc have not uploaded/edited their videos yet but it would be nice to see the new sets in action at least in a video.

LED Plus is just LG's name for edge-lit LED w/local dimming. They employed it in 2010 in the LE5500 and some other models.

^ ya just watched those videos.. all of them seemed like marketing hype rather than actual individual hands on type videos. I would have loved to get a good video showcasing the actual design of the sets as well as focused video playing on them as the guy talks about specs but it looks like we have to wait to see them in person in stores.

This seems like it's the official podcast of AVS. They seem fairly impressed with the LG (at least the guy who likes 3D).

LG also showed our favorite use of 3D at the show - passive glasses! The 3D actually looked pretty good. It wasn't as good as the 3D on a Panasonic plasma, but let's be fair, what is? It was pretty good, pretty smooth and very cheap glasses. They were giving them away like candy. Now there's a way to make 3D appealing to the masses.
