Hi I recently upgraded my speakers to polk rti8 mains. Csi A6 center and rti A1 surrounds. I went from a 9 year old Polk sub satellite package I bought new a long time ago. Mr recover is a older yamaha rxv657. No hdmi support but I've had it a few years and it's done me well. My question is this. My old Polk sub sucks. System sounds good with the new speakers but I want that low end. I also want a new receiver. I'm I really missing out on the lossless audio on blu rays or would I better putting my money towards a new sub and then saving for a new receiver? Any recommendations for a sub? A receiver? Thinking the new yamaha rxv667( to give u a clue on my budget. Sub is different story any recommendations for small room? Outlaw?)? Thanks much this is my First post but I'm a long time reader. -Bryan

From what it sounds like to me it seems like the first thing you may want to do is replace your sub. That way you'll be able to fully enjoy your entire new sound system. Your existing receiver works fine (right?) so you may want to deal with that down the road. You could upgrade that first and enjoy the advanced codecs and convenience of HDMI, but you may be bummed that you still have a crappy sub. In terms of a sub suggestion we'll need to know the size of your room and your listening preferences (what percentage of movies to music or gaming, etc.)

Small room 13x17x8. Mostly movies. I'd say 90% movies and 10% games. Not a lot of cash to spend so I would like bang for buck. Like $3-500 on a sub

For your budget and listening preferences you might want to consider the HSU VTF-1 or STF-2. I recently spent a while researching subs before I made my purchase and it seemed like 98% of the knowledgeable people on this forum STRONGLY recommended subs from ID (internet direct) companies as opposed to popular brands like JBL, Polk, Klipsch, etc. from your local hifi stores. HSU, SVS, Epik, and Rythmik are some of those highly respected ID companies considering your budget. Another thing to think about is that your room is not THAT small--HSU considers a small room to be 1500 cubic feet or less, and you're slightly more than 1500. Nobody ever says "I bought too much sub for my room." If it's too loud then turn it down. Someday you may move to a different place and have a much larger room.

I enjoy DTS-MA but how much of a difference it will make to your ears on your system is tough to say. With a good system even the lossy formats will sound excellent.
