I keep mine in my laptop bag all the time with some favorite movies in MP4 format on a 32GB card. Plug in some headphones and it's great little media player.

For use at home, I am probably going to grab either the Optoma or Acer 500 lumen models. The QUMI works fine on my 142" 2.8HP, but I'd prefer it to be a bit brighter which these larger models should handle fine.

Jason,

I actually have to angle the cardboard for it to mask the light squarely. It's cheap looking but hey, whatever works. I bet a 500 lumen led will give you just the right amount of brightness for your 142" HP screen as I use to have a 110" 2.8 HP and I can actually tell it was alot more than .4 gain brighter than my 2.4 HP or at least to my eyes it appeared to have more gain. I couldn't go over 92" with a 2.4 HP with the qumi and be happy with the brightness. I like you do like a very bright image.

Well I got mine in the mail from Amazon Wednesday and have been playing around with it. First, I am projecting it on my living room wall for now, I haven't even started my basement finishing project yet! I've been projecting about a 96 inch image. Hooked it up during the day, on the opposite wall from my living room windows ( the only empty wall in the house.) initially I was not that impressed, but once the sun went down, it was great. Obviously this thing needs total darkness to shine. Even my wife was stunned. Still need to go back and find where in in this thread settings were mentioned for optimum picture quality.
Last night I went to Jo-Ann's fabric store to get black out cloth to make a screen. If anyone is interested, the are having a 50% off sale. Got 3 yards of Roclon budget blackout for about $11. Today I'll hit up Home Depot for the wood and whatever else I need. I think I'll set it up in the basement now, even though it isn't finished yet.

Can't remember which page it's in but here's their settings that I wrote down:

Display Mode: User
Brightness: 50
Contrast: 50
Sharpness: 16
Gamma: Video
Color Space: Auto
Color Temp: Normal (another person said Warm - so try both, I like Warm myself)

Thanks for the JoAnn tip. Just scored 3 yards of 54" blackout for just shy of $11. I'm setting mine up in an unfinished basement as well. Far more excited to get the projector and screen mounted, those other minor details like seats and comfort can be addressed later.

Exactly!

You guys (chad and stoney) are where I was about a month ago I did the same thing, built a blackout cloth screen with a wood frame, then framed it with black velvet (actually tru-black screen flok which was more expensive than the BOC). Came out great, my room only allows for an 82" screen but with blackout curtains I have it at almost zero light and the Qumi does very well in that environment. Have fun building your screens, I did

Hi Mike,

Can you send qumi and screen picture

Sure, these aren't the best photos as I'm not a great photographer but you can see the little index cards(they are 2-ply so light doesn't come through them). It's a quick fix though and does block that stray light coming out of lens.

I was watching a movie on my qumi and it shut down suddenly. Did it overheat? I am very worried, its still working now, but I hope it didnt screw anything up. Is this normal for projectors as this is my first projector. How do you attach a mount this thing and prevent it from overheating? thanks

When it shut down, did you quickly touch the Qumi to see if it was excessively heated up?

yeh it was scorching, so im guessing it wasnt ventilated properly, so how do u mount it?

You can mount the Qumi on just about any camera tripod or use a mount for security cameras. This is the wall-mount I used for the short time I had a Qumi:

I haven't used the QUMI in a while, i've been busy testing the Sony HW30. Last night I just wanted to watch some TV, so I threw it on a tripod and it filled about 133" of my 142" screen. With the lights out, it was brighter on my HP screen than I remember when I first got it.

I feel asleep and woke up in the morning and it was still on. It was pretty warm, but not hot.

For all the technical talk of the diamond pixels and the focus issues, I still think this is a marvel of science considering how small it is. This would have looked like science fiction not long ago...

Built a 96" screen today from blackout cloth and have it temporarily mounted in my living room. I am a first time projector owner but this thing is awesome. HDTV looks decent on it but with Blu Rays on the PS3... What a picture! In total darkness it's amazing. I've been popping in Blu Rays and skipping around. Now I'm thinking I should have went a little bigger with the screen. Guess I can just make another for the basement! Thanks to everyone who posted about this machine and convinced me to get one.
Some quick pics from my iPhone 3GS.

You know I have over 500 hours on my qumi and I would swear it is brighter now than it was the first 100 hours.

This gets my vote for being the most ghetto mod done to a projector this year

But seriously, this kind of issue should have been solved during design. I find it quite a small miracle that it somehow managed to slip through all the checking and end up in retail. Some serious oversight by the people at Vivitek/Delta Electronics

I am thinking about taking it apart and mounting it in a bigger box with a large low speed fan.

am I nuts?

Why?? Its virtually silent. If there are any heat problems the 1 year warranty will cover you. Now if you were going to do this with the Optoma ML500 which is quite a bit louder by early reports and youtube videos I would just make a little hushbox but I can't see any reason to do so with the qumi but if you did I wouldn't take it apart, I would just mount the qumi in the hushbox with the fan if you are concerned about heat.

Mike
maybe a hushbox is the way to go.

even the qumi is a little loud for me - not a deal breaker tho

that poor optima sounds like a lawn mower on the youtube clips - good lord
post #1613 of 2025
You can't judge how noisy something is based on a random Youtube video. Unless of course you plan on using the projector with your ear pressed against it.

Also, you must have the quietest lawn mower in the world.

500+ hours have paased on my qumi as well...seems like have been addicted now...daily 5-6 hours, n its killing my job man...

I love my Qumi. The 5 minute warm up issue is no problem at all and, fortunately, I don't have any light leakage or areas of the screen that don't focus. I have been converting AVI files via Handbrake. However, I have noticed that when playing these files from the internal memory, a memory stick, or SD memory card there is a slight stutter to the image. It's not quite smooth as when feeding the Qumi video from another source. I'm guessing the Qumi is not able to process the video data internally. Is anyone else having this problem or have any ideas for a solution?

revision3 has a vid that shows the battery pack 50 lumens for 1.5 hrs. about 99 you rows jk

I have noticed the same exact issue.. just the slightest jutter here and there playing from the SD card. Sources from HDMI are perfectly smooth. it must be something with the playback of media files.

Thanks Zombie 10K. At least I now know I'm not crazy and its not just my Qumi. Not a deal breaker. Not too bad on movies, but worse with sports due to the quick movements. Fortunately, I'll only be watching sports through DirecTV HD and not a memory source.

Somebody tried to use as the projective screen background photo paper?
How there will be a quality of the image on gray and white a photo to a paper?
(Excuse for computer transfer.)

Looking into my lens, the black opening looks like a backwards capital letter "D". is everyone's like this? What is the purpose of this design. I noticed some light leakage on the left of the screen too. Doesn't really bother me though as I plan to make the wall the screen will go on black.
