VIVITEK QUMI LED 1280x800 - Page 61

LOL.

I said they were factors in my decision.

Factor=one of the elements contributing to a particular result or situation.

I also said "I Don't want to be that guy"

Another thing I said, "Individuals need to make their choice based on their needs and applications".

Why would you even bring presentations into the point while quoting me? I do not see the point you are trying to make. Almost all of your posts contain an ambiguous sentence or two. One could assume, you post only to pad your post count. Seldom do you ever offer an extensive, insightful argument.

Real= Being or occurring in fact or actuality; having verifiable existence

Those problems are "real" in the fact that they do occur. I said they were "factors" in my decision.

just cause "could care less" bugs me, watch this http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisf...0/language-usa . but yeah 3dnewb does make it quite clear its just his view, thats totally valid, he does more than most by reminding that it is a personal opinion.

ya do we really need to point out it"personal opinion"
sad ,I found 3dnewb posts help full and I wasnt attacking him but maybe it came out that way.

Just wanted to chime in. I don't think many people see Eat Meat's posts As useless.
I for one greatly respect his opinions, and I'm not sure I can think of a single example of him writing something that wasn't either informative or witty.

Other than that, I wish I could see a qumi in action. They don't sell them anywhere near me. Can anybody that has seen the panasonic Pt-ae700 or a casio 240 or an acer h5360 tell me how they compare to the qumi?
I for one always see that Eat Meat knows whats up on specs and tech so yeah I respect Eat Meat posts since I find them to be helpfull/informative.

That being said Eat Meat was right about what he said about retroreflective highway sign material not working for pj screens and so its time for Russell to eat some humble pie.

Since this is the Qumi thread let me post my impressions:

I went and got some BOC cloth but my Son said Dad the screen has holes in it and so I searched at where they sell drapes until I found some cotton based material they use to make sweatpants out of and it worked very good for a pj screen at 1:1 gain.

The resultant image feels like either watching a huge 150 inch HDTV screen or really, really being the owner of a movie theater for a pittance of 499 dollars.

Needless to say now that my Son has a Qumi well I also want one for me and I plan to purchase it in January.

After watching some more I noticed that the colors really are better than on an HDTV and I am finding it hard to settle for watching on a 42 inch HDTV versus a 150 inch/170 inch Qumi image.....sigh patiently waiting for January.

Monday I plan to try a black sweatpant screen instead of a white screen to see what better contrast levels do??

Sorry dude but Eat Meat was right! and I was wrong! about the highway sign material, the Qumi screen size thats usable, the image quality of that pj, etc.

So from now on I am going to listen to what that dude has to say.

For 3D a HP screen or pull the drapes closed or a combination??

Hello, can someone help me with my Qumi. I have read through most if not all this forum and i can't seem to get the Brilliant color mode activated. I went through all the options in User mode, or Movie, or every other one and i can't seem to get the Brilliant color mode activated. It just stays grey and thats all. I am able to change the brightness and contrast and sharpness in the USER mode but can't get the brilliant color. Someone please let me know how to activate it.
I just wanted to say, as for the loudness of the fan, it is very weird because when it is in normal mode, the fan is quiet, but when i turn on ECO mode, it gets very loud. As i was reading throughout the forum, everyone else has it opposite.

Thanks for your help.

Hey man, brilliant color probably is going to be avaliable if you connect it to a pc, I haven´t tried in mine, about the fan don't worry in ECO it's louder but just for a few minuts, then it goes quieter(like in normal mode) at least that's waht mine does, hope this helps, and let me know if you could resolve the brilliant color question, btw what does brilliant color do?
Well the brilliant color mode is suppose to give you much more saturated colors and better quality of picture, at least thats what i heart from reading through this forum and i've heart that people were able to enable it. I have tried to connect with HDMI to TV, HDMI to PC or MAC and even HDMI to the XBOX console, but i still can not get that brilliant color to highlight and be enabled. I don't know but i've tried everything, even changing all the functions around from user to movie mode, to presentation. to all the other ones and no success. IF someone can help your about setting the brilliant mode, i would definitely appreciate it.
Thanks for the help

i guess i won't buy another pico for movie again, but i want to ask a question before i decide.

i only used pico projectors, it leak so much light, even at a total black signal, it still leak lots of light, if i put my hand to block some light, compare my hand's shadow, if the shadow is total black, then the other part can't even say it's"grey", it's worse than grey.

my question is, how much light does darkchip3 leak? (yes, i want to buy a cheap darkchip3 BIG projector)

thanks in advanced!

It leaks a bit of light but then so do a lot of projectors.

Buying a projector is a balanceing act of money spent versus what features one wants along with inherent design limitations.

A good balance of price point/features was when I found the Qumi.
Remember that every year the tech. improves
post #1815 of 2016
I'm not sure there's any projector that passes the hand puppet test.
Hi,

I got my Qumi projector couple of days before christmas.
Yes the focus issue was there. Lower left corner would not focus at the same time as the other parts, especially the upper right. Pretty irritating.

It probably wasn't very wise, but I opened it to see if it the lens could be adjusted. I found the 4 screws under its feet and with some half aggressive bending I managed to crack it open. No. I found no adjustment screws anywhere and I tried to disassembly it completely, but I found it too risky so I stopped where I was.

If I loosened the two reachable screws on the lens-package, I could bend it slighty off the frame and I soon found, that if I bent in one corner, I could get the focus darn near prefect all over. So I tried some shims and tightened the screws. 0.3mm thickness was perfect, so I made a small piece, tightened the screws and bent the part sticking out to get it out of the way.

I now have a very much better Qumi!

It is a mystery why they didn't make this adjustable in the design. Couple of spring washers between the lens package and the frame would probably have been enough. (sigh).

For those who are interested in running the Qumi from DC power (solar power / battery) I found that it need around 16-19V DC and draws only 30watts of power in the user mode and normal lamp setting. Quite good! It runs down to about 12V, but goes into the terrible economy lamp setting below 16V (weak and green picture). A 19V laptop up-converter is recommended for a 12V power source.

Here is some pictures of my Qumi crack open adventure and my half crude fix of the focus issue. If you are not sure you can afford the risk of damaging your Qumi. Don't try it...

RogerJoensson ,You are so awesome!!
Been a while since I last posted or even follow this thread but gladed to see people still have interest in the Qumi.

Happy to report that my Qumi survived my kid's pre-New Year Eve's all girls sleep over (8 girls from 10-12 in the basement). Qumi was on non-stop for about 24+ hrs playing Wii, DVD/BluRay movies via the PS3, Xbox with Kinect and cable tv. The kids love it down there and I love the fact that I'm not even thinking 'did they turn it off when they went to sleep' (they didn't and left it on cable all night).

Overall, I think the Qumi has put it over 100+ hours during the holidays (pre-xmas and post new year) and the color and brightness has been as good now as they were on the day I opened the box. Definitely one of the best $499 I've ever spent.
I am also happy with the 499 spent and not haveing to worry about is it on or off.

I am going to buy a second Qumi and then hopefully next years model will either feature 500 to 700 lumens at 720p or feature 300 lumens at 1080p??
Looks like there is a Qumi Q5 coming out. 500 lumens. By my calculations the Qumi Q5 will be 2.5 times better than the Q2.

Different tack. Have people sent the qumi to vivitek for lens focus repairs. Was it successful?

How many connections have you got, or do the kids know how to change the cables?

You probably have to be in luck that it is one of those two corners that are accessible where it helps increasing the gap.
And again, there must be tension in the metals after this stunt and it doesn't feel completely right to do it like this, but so far, so good...

Would it not be more risk free to send it to vivitek for repairs?

VGA Input to Qumi via VGA Switch (4-to-1 switch) -
- TV - cable into an old RCA-to-VGA box that I have laying around
- Wii - RCA to VGA adapter
- Xbox - VGA Output
- PC - VGA output

HDMI Input to Qumi - direct connected to PS3

I run 1x VGA and 1x HDMI extension cables (~25'/30' each - can't remember the exact lenght now) and 1x 'power extension cord' up to the Qumi which is mounted on the ceiling using a simple Universal Ceiling Camera Mount (got mine from Amazon for <$10). The power is actually plugged into one of those wireless remote control light switcher - this works since the Qumi doesn't draw much current at all.

All sounds are then routed to the appropriate inputs into an old AV receiver I have (5.1 Surround Sound).

So the kids knows to use the HDMI if they're going to play with the PS3 or watch DVD/Bluray movies, if they're going to play with the Xbox/TV/Wii/PC, they know to use the VGA input for the Qumi and then just push the button on the VGA switcher to the right number. Then just dial the receiver to the right 'input'. [I actually have a single piece of paper that shows this next to the receiver]

Thought I had posted my setup sometime ago in this thread (with picture I think).
Hi everyone
I recently got my QUMI Q2 projector as well
Fortunately, no noticeable focus shift, not weird led problems, and the fan on the settings i found best for myself is far from even being a nuisance .
I have only a single question-
When projecting very large images (100"+), is the focus wheel in everyone's projectors maxed out?
when i hit around 92" i have to max it out to get the best result. Looks a bit weird to me since in the optoma PK301 i had and the AAXA P4 i currently have here as well, i didn't even have to go all the way to get focus on a 200" image (not that it was usable, but had the chance to check it while playing around)

Odd thing is that after i max it out, i can project a HUGE image (350", on the neighbor's wall) and it doesn't seem out of focus. maybe just a tiny bit on the "soft" side, but not blurry.
So how the hell does the focus on this device work? i'm baffled that i have to move it so much for the 15"-90" range, but it doesn't really matter from 100" and up

Every answer would be appreciated, thanks

The question is, would they fix it properly? It really doesn't seem to be adjustable. They seem to rely on precision that is not there.
And also, it passed quality inspection once and must have been OK to their lousy standards. This was obviously not the only one with focus conformity issues...
I guess they chose to not make the optics adjustable after assembly, probably to save production time and costs, but the precision of parts obviously was not quite good enough to get reasonable focus (etc) on all (but a few?).
If they had replaced the projector for me, I would have risked getting one with bad Chromatic Aberration instead, which has also been reported. Fortunately mine was quite OK in that respect.
That is the reason why I chose, to risk it.

I believe I read that the wifi dongle accessory that is due to come out in April will work in the Qumi and Qumi Q2 after it has received a software update. Watching Netflix with nothing more attached to the Qumi than the USB dongle would be awesome!!!
