nope, ATV2 connected via optical works just fine. You can have BluRay in Zone 1, Airplay (via ATV2) in Zone 2 and Zone 3, or a different source again in Zone 3 all at the same time. Works fine, do it all the time (Denon 4311, iPod Touch, Denon Remote app and iTunes remote app).

The only thing I cant do is try and stream music via Airplay while someone else is actually using the ATV for other use (watching movie via HDMI etc). It seems to be one or the other but not both. Not sure if this is a bug or just a product limitation but doesnt happen all that often for me to go looking for a fix etc.

^^
As noted in post #1, a limitation of the Airplay Upgrade is that it "hijacks" all zones when in use.

1) Stream music from my iTunes library stored on a NAS (Dlink DNS-323 - this NAS has an iTunes server application) to Zone 2 (likely through pre-outs to another old receiver/amp since I am running a 7.1 setup for Zone 1).
2) Be able to be controllable by a wifi iPad to skip tracks, select artists, etc wirelessly.

Basically, I would like to replicate the Sonos system without having to buy a Sonos Zone Player (ZD-90).

Does anyone know if this is possible using AirTunes? I read on the 4311 Official thread about someone who indicated that he could not assign the internet source to zone 2 without also sending it to zone 1. This would be a deal breaker for me as I need the ability to have zone 1 in tv or movie mode while simultaneously streaming music to zone 2.

Thanks.

I just started reading this thread, so I don't know if this has been answered yet.
I am doing something very similar with my older Denon 3808, and an airport express. I can select to play "itunes" on Zone 2 or 3, and it does not affect Video on Zone 1.

After installation of airplay, airplay and Remote app on my ipod touch work, but Wizzapp is no longer working. Always get message "Connection failed. Please check the device". Did anybody figure out what the issue is and how to overcome this ?

Only the inbuilt one in the Denon/ Marantz AVR hijacks the main zone.

If using Airplay via AppleTV, you can do what you like with it as it is treated as any other digital input on the AVR and therefore, be used in any Zone at any time.

True .. but then this is the Denon/Marantz Airplay upgrade thread.

Yep, and you'd be nuts to buy it in it's current specification when for a few more bills, buy an ATV2 and life is good

Was just responding to the post above that said you need an air port express rather than an ATV

Hi All,

So I got my AV7005 last week, and immediately upgraded to use AirPlay, which I'm hoping to use exclusively to replace my Squeezebox solution for my whole house.

I'm running into a weird issue though. It will play fine, but every 2nd or 3rd song, the audio stream will stop playing through the Marantz. iTunes will still be LOOKING like it is streaming, but no audio will play.

If I look at the TV, the screen is showing that it is still streaming too! I have to pause and play on iTunes, and then the audio will start again.

Is this a bug??? If so, any workaround? This is a deal killer for me! Help!

- Thanx

I have a 3311ci.

Am I able to run ITUNES via Airplay off of my Dell laptop or do I require an Apple medium such as Ipad or Iphone to do it?

If you get the AirPlay upgrade on the 3311CI, you can play your songs from your Dell laptop's iTunes library on the 3311.

Has anybody tried to play high-resolution (96 Khz/24 bit files) to a Denon/Marantz receiver via Airplay?

Can they receive those files? Are they only sent at 44.1 Khz/16 bit, as is the case with Apple TV?

Following up on my previously posted issue: "It will play fine, but every 2nd or 3rd song, the audio stream will stop playing through the Marantz. iTunes will still be LOOKING like it is streaming, but no audio will play."

I found that this happens with all AirPlay devices, so maybe it is an iTunes issue and not a Marantz/Denon issue...

Jon, I have not had any problems playing songs on my 3311 AVRs. They both play music from iTunes continuously with no problems.

Hm. Weird. Must be a problem with my iTunes and my Drobo...

Thanks for the note.

Happens with my iPhone and my laptop through an Airport Express in my living room. The convenience is great but for critical listening I'll stick to a physical connection.

Just wanted to chime in with my own AirPlay implementation: instead of paying the $50 Denon upgrade fee, I spent the $50 on a refurbished Airport Express from CowBoom, which gives me Apple's (superior, regularly updated) version of AirPlay/AirTunes -- as well as a WiFi bridge, print sharing, etc. I'm very pleased with the decision so far.

Just performed the upgrade and continue to get the following message:

An uknown error (-15006) occurred while connecting to the remote speaker: "denon AVR-3311 1C5352.

Any ideas?

Like many in this thread, I was a little disappointed that the Air Play Upgrade only offered audio but not video when it was finally released.

This is an interesting article that opens the door to speculation (and hope) that (if the 3311ci has the hardware capability), the legal and licensing agreements to allow Air Play video playback could be on the horizon. Bloomberg Article about Air Play. Nothing specific about Denon, but the article includes the following statement:

Quote:
Under the plan, Apple would license its AirPlay software to consumer-electronics makers that could use it in devices for streaming movies, TV shows and other video content, said the people, who asked to remain anonymous because the plans haven’t been made public. Apple now only licenses AirPlay for streaming audio. Devices that could be used for video may be available this year, one of the people said.

EDIT - another interesting quote from the article:

Quote:
Companies pay Apple $4 for each device sold that carries AirPlay, according to two people who are familiar with the arrangements, though not authorized to speak about them. Those licensing agreements prevent video from being streamed, even though the technology is there to do it, one person said.

Sighs. Now I'm having this problem. It's also reported in one of the two reviews of the current version of the app. It's even more annoying because it's obviously wrong. The volume slider (the only thing live) still works so the connection cannot have failed.

I really don't want to reset the Denon.

Im having the same problem as above. Itunes is missing the AIRPLAY icon. Any ideas fellas?? I thought maybe there might have been a problem with the upgrade but if i try to run the upgrade again, the 3311 shows, "NO UPGRADE AVAILABLE"

Is iTunes at the latest software version?
Can you access the 3311 menu over the network just to prove your PC can see the Denon?
Do you have another device (iPhone, iPod touch etc) on your network that you can try and stream direct to the Denon? You should see the AirPlay icon when playing music.

Yeah, ITunes is the latest version available.

The Denon shows up on our network. You can access our music files via the 3311.

Our iPad and iPhone 4's (which also has the latest FW installed) seem to have the same problem, no AirPlay icon.

Does Airplay on Denon/Marantz support gapless playback? This is a key factor for me. DLNA on the Marantz SR7005 cannot play gapless.

Thanks,

So I finally got the AirPlay option installed on my M-CR603 and it Just Works! My interest is music only: the M-CR603 is a stereo receiver that I've connected to two pairs of in-wall speakers. With AirPlay I can pull out my iPhone and listen to tunes without ear buds.

This can be accomplished two ways: use the AirPlay button in the iPod function on the iPhone and stream the music via WIFI from the iPhone to the Marantz.

OR, use the Remote app to control iTunes on my Mac. Music is streamed from the Mac to the Marantz via the wired network. For a party, this will make more sense since it won't burn up the battery in my iPhone. (And the music won't stop if I get too far from the WiFI router.)

BTW, a lot of people recommended getting an AirPort Express ($99) rather than paying Marantz for the AirPlay option ($50). (An Apple TV made no sense since there is no TV connected and the Marantz lives in the basement beside my networking gear.) I went with the Marantz AirPlay option since it:
-saves me $50
-saves using up another port on the ethernet switch
-saves having to connect and power another device

So far, it seems to be working well but I literally just got the upgrade installed.

BTW, D&M Canada were annoyingly slow in processing the upgrade. I sent in the application a week ago. I finally called yesterday to get a real name to re-send the application (rather than contact@dmcanada.ca) and it was processed this morning.

I would recommend the Airport Express to people who want a receiver that does not feature Airplay and who don't want the video that comes with an Apple TV. But sure, if you've already got the receiver that has Airplay capability--why not?

A refurb AirPort Express will run you $49. I bought mine from CowBoom and it's working beautifully. The proper Apple implementation of AirPlay as found on the AE won't hijack the main zone, so one's multizone setup isn't compromised. Plus Apple is bound to keep tweaking AirPlay in the form of future firmware upgrades to the AE, which isn't something I would expect from Denon/Marantz. That's why I count myself as one of the "a lot of people" recommending an AE. But if the Denon option and all its caveats is sufficient, then yes, it's probably better than adding another powered device.

On the subject of alternatives to Denon's implementation of AirPlay, this looks interesting.

Not so much. It's interesting but it's not really an alternative unless someone willing to risk litigation builds a box that acts as an endpoint and plugs into your AVR. An AE or ATV are alternatives.

Um, I suppose running VLC faux-Tunes on a Shiva could count but remember an ATV2 is quite inexpensive, can do more and do it quite nicely.

I wish they could either offer an outboard adapter r firmware upgrade to make my 3808ci air play compatble, worth $50 or so

New version of the Wizz app released today. Between last week's and this update, can now play iPod tunes to AirPlay receivers without leaving the Wizz app. (Presume the Denon app is getting corresponding updates.)

Also, Apple's Remote app had been giving me grief for the last week (couldn't find my iTunes Library) but that seems to be fixed by the latest iOS update: v. 4.3.2. Haven't installed the iTunes update (v. 10.2.2). Hope it doesn't break anything!
