Just experienced a Buttkicker - comments and question

I just got into the Buttkicker thing yesterday, finally opening the wireless kit I bought from AVS classifieds.

My initial experience, a quick and dirty test on a plastic stackable chair wasn't all that great. The thing was shaking like mad, but didn't feel like the deep bass I kept reading about. I finally discovered that turning down the amp gain caused the effect I was seeking.

Next I took the Buttkicker to the media room and installed on the loveseat. Yup, it rocks! I as able to really turn down the volume on some music and still get a great deth of sound from it. Again, the key was to turn down the BK so that it's vibrating, not shaking the couch.

A friend of mine came in this morning and I played a few scenes for him from Avatar and LoTR. He was an instant convert and also felt that watching movies would never be the same again.

We did a few tests, monitoring volume (by standing up off the couch), and bass "feeling"/perceived volume while sitting on the couch. We tried with the BK and 12" CV Sub (down to 28 Hz), with all permutations of them on and off. The best effect was with both on, but even after turning off the sub, it was pretty convincing.

As a result, I've decided to install one of my 10" subs in the media room with the Buttkicker. The 12" CV will be moved into the moderately sound-proofed basement, and I may install some Aura bass-shakers down there too.

The only problem is that my basement home theatre is a dual purpose room, designed to be a gym by day, and then convert into a 120" screen theatre in under 5 minutes. To achieve this I've bought 4 of these inflatable loungers. Now that I've had a taste for bass transduction, I really want to have some in the theatre room too. I was planning on building a 48"x 40" platform from plywood and a 2x4 support frame, to which I'd bolt on the bass shakers on the underside. I'd then cover the platform appropriately, e.g. carpet glued on and place these loungers on top.

I'm hoping to do a test run when I get the platform built and the loungers arrive. However, I was wondering if any of you had any comments on the idea, think it will/won't work etc. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for reading!

You need to make sure you adjust the levels properly so they seem "realistic".

I have the AuroPro Bass Shakers and this is what I did:

- split the LFE out of my amp, one segment goes to my powered subwoofer, the other to another amp that powers my bass shakers

- kept the amp to the bass shakers off and with the subwoofer active, tuned the room as usual (@75db)

- turned off the subwoofer and turned on the amp to the bass shakers; tuned the level on the bass shaker amp to 65db

For my setup, this works out great

Thanks for the advice. Quite logical. What I was really wondering was whether bass shakers on a platform would be sufficient and safe to feel their effects in inflatable seating; I was concerned that there'd be too much damping from the air cushion. However, from reading previous threads, I think a bass transducer platform can more or less vibrate anything.
