OTA to CRT TV?

I've notice my local wal-mart has started to sell converter boxes again. I can't speak for other wal-marts or the quality of the boxes they sell. I think they're RCA.

Depending on your signal strength (check tvfool.com) and building materials, you may be able to just use a separate indoor antenna on that old TV, (plus a digital converter box, of course). I would avoid RCA converter boxes. Their reliability is spotty and so is the reception, unless you have a really good signal. Two good converter boxes are Zenith & Insignia.

Just to add to this good advice, the Zenith DTT-901 & Insignia NS-DXA1 CECB have the same excellent LG tuner guts and the only exterior difference of any note is the brand name. I don't know where to buy them retail, but I do see them available on craigslist from time to time. Actually the tuners in my 2 Zenith DTT-901 boxes are better than the ones in my 2 big screen televisions.

I also recommend trying one of these boxes with an indoor antenna to see if it works. If you know someone with a CECB, maybe you could talk them into letting you borrow it for a test run?

The two models DragoLoaf posted can usually be found for sale on eBay by searching for the model numbers or Zenith or Insignia Converter Box.

Also, if recording is needed, check out the thread on DVD recorders. Many are available online with ATSC tuners. The tuners may not be as good, but I never noticed a difference if at least an attic antenna is used.
