budget receivers with discrete amp circuitry

I am a newbie lookining for a decent quality 5.1 or 7.1 receiver (for a 5.1 setup) within a budget. I want to spend actually less than $400 and after searching this forum as well as the internet in general for info, I have come to realise that one of the most important aspects in choosing an AVR (at least for me) is having discrete power.

That said, what are some better receivers to look for sub $400 with discrete power supplies? I am thinking Yamaha's RX-667, Onkyo SR608. What about the SR508 (does that have discrete power), and what about lower end Denon's like the AVR591/1611 ?

Sorry for starting so many threads, however each one addresses different issues.

Sure you don't mean discrete amp circuitry? (As opposed to a chip amp like some Yamaha receivers use) Discrete is not a term one uses with power supplies.

You are correct, I meant discrete amp circuitry.

The RX-667 Yamaha with discrete amp circuitry was much more beefy than the RX-567.

Basically I am filtering receivers by cost first, then discrete amp circuitry second, then everything else after to make my purchase simple.

So far I am considering the Yamaha RX-667, Denon AVR-591/1611. Does anyone know if the Onkyo RC260/SR608/SR508, Denon AVR-391 and any lower end Harmon Kardon units use discrete amp circuitry?

As I am a novice, I am basically going by discrete amp circuitry and weight to see what the true power is of an amp.

The main floor standing speakers I will be powering (when playing music only) will be Polk Monitor 60's or 70s (I haven't made my mind up on those yet).

I think the 667 is a nice receiver. Were I to be buying one in that price range, I would look at the 667 as a candidate.

The Yammie 667 does use discrete. The Denon 591/1611 and up use discrete. Not sure where Onkyo starts using it, but I'm pretty sure the 608 does use discrete. In that price range, the Pioneer 1020 uses discrete. I think all HK receiver use discrete.

I wouldn't worry to much about power as any of these receivers should power those speakers. I personally like Denon and Onkyo as they use Audyssey room correction and do well on the bench.

Saying Denon and Onkyo do well on bench testing is generalization. Some Onkyo receivers have done very well in bench testing, when compared to their output spec, but I don't think you can generalize that.

I would guess the 667 would look ok in a bench test when compared to other receivers in that price category. But that's a guess for sure.

Yamaha definitely lacks Audyssey. They have stuck with their own YPAO. YPAO does have one advantage over Audyssey in that you can easily tweak it.

If you don't need 3D the Yamaha's 765 and 1065 can be had for your price. Look around the internet for best prices. J&R and 6 ave. are good places to start.

Thanks for the advice. I checked both J&R, Amazon, 6 ave and ebay and I cannot find the Yamaha 765 for a good price (i.e. anything close to newegg's $299 blow out a few months ago). Anyone know where to find remaining new stock of the 765?

Thanks, a little more than I want to spend on the 765.

Right now the front runners for me are:
Onkyo RC260
Yamaha RX-V667
Denon AVR-791/1611

Three things.

Monitor 70s are fairly efficient speakers (90 dbwm). Look at a speakers sensitivity, not it's size.

A doubling of power (50 to 100 watts say) only increases sound by 3db, which is barely noticeable.

Marantz at 50 watts = most others at 100. Very few show the amps true power output.
