Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Page 5

Nah, probably not. It's Fantasy, through and through. Orcs, Elves, Dragons, etc. You're better off levelling up your SCAR-H and finding a good camping spot.

Loving this game. Never played any Elder Scroll games before, but put in 25+ hours on Fallout 3 and finished Fallout: NV. Figured I would enjoy this one.

Gotta read the books cause some increase your skills or give you a side quest I pick up every book I see.

Making my dude a Necromancer/Enchanter. Like the spells and such, but I want quick hotkeys for spells. Have Fire in right hand, then dont like hitting favorites to pause the game, then select an armor spell in left hand, cast it, pause again, select another spell like heal for battle. Then when creature gets weak I pause again, select soul trap, etc. Kind of annoying. Would be nice if the D-Pad was used as hotkeys.

Havent fought a Dragon, only level 12, but I had a war with two Giants last night and a Dragon was hovering above us the entire time making me **** my pants. Good times

If you get the PC version on DVD:

Install from the DVD and patch takes 15 minutes versus the hours to DL from Steam. I just did it, works great.

PS3 version got beat up in the comparison videos w/ the 360. Was it the whole 'not setting RGB Full' or anything like that? I was hoping this would be one of the titles that the PS3 would trump on - like BF3.

It's nothing too significant. Check out Digital Foundry's article if you want the technical rundown. Basically, it's very similar to the shortcomings found in Rockstar games (GTAIV and RDR). Slightly blurred textures, slightly more framerate issues, and a shorter draw distance are the three most noticeable, and neither is a very big deal. DF also points out the possible save-game issue on PS3 (where bugs and performance drops may increase as you progress in the game), but this was an issue in prior PS3 versions of Bethesda games and most people didn't even notice.

Anyway, I really wouldn't worry about it.

FXAA on PS3, less aliasing but blurs. 360 AA fails on edges and foliage and you get "jaggies"

V-sync on PS3, so drops frames, 360 no V-sync so screen tears instead.

Texture bug on 360, save bug on PS3.

DF loves the 360, so whenever he gives a subjective opinion it always favors the 360. FXAA was the next big thing for the 360, but when the PS3 uses it suddenly it sucks, lol.

I was playing at 1080P 60fps last night, but the game is hard to get into. Tons of NPCs walking around, often talking at the same time. I have no idea what is going on. So I popped Dark Souls back in to clear my head

You must have once messed up head if Dark Souls helps you clear it

I must say, I am thoroughly enjoying Dark Souls, even with it being so punishing.

It's amazing how far we've come, that we're arguing (not US in particular, but gamers) about the differences between screenshots that are basically stunning, and come from a world of big, clunky dots and squares.

When I look back at the old "Dungeon Master" that I played on my Atari ST, then compare it to this, I smile and realize that I'm living in a fun time. Games and graphics are SO good.

I'm not trippin' off a jaggie here or there or any of that.

This multi-part quest had me running around nearly the entire length of the map! The setup and story are fun and funny, with some great dialog and a fair level of challenge overall. The reward is worth the risk and I was literally laughing out loud. When I started I was lvl 13, when I finished I was lvl 15 (got jumped by a dragon along the way so your mileage may vary).

Best. Sidequest. Ever. If you're stuck wondering what to do next, want to discover more of the map, or just have a fun time then this one's for you:

Go to Rorikstead- dead west of Whiterun waaay west- and head to the inn. Find the chap that wants to have a drinking game and go to it! You'll be glad you did. It's called "A Night To Remember" and it was. Your payoff is one of the more fun weapons I've ever had the pleasure to use. Makes me laugh thinking about it.

Totally disagree; I've never seen any sort of console bias. IMO you won't find a better, fairer, and more technically savvy rundown anywhere. DF is the only place that actually measures this stuff reliably and in motion, and that can knowledgeably identify causes and effects fairly accurately. And they're always straightforward with their readers when they make a subjective judgment call.

Also, I think you misunderstood DF's discussion of FXAA on the PS3 version. First, if you regularly read their articles, you'd see that the initial promise of the tech hasn't really panned out (at least, on consoles). Second, they blame the overall "blurriness" on the way FXAA is implemented in this particular case on PS3, not of the tech generally. And last, they actually are saying that the PS3 ends up doing a better job with some transparent objects and foliage because of the way it uses FXAA. I'd call that a fair account.

From the comparison videos I've seen, the 360's graphics are ever-so-slightly better than the PS3's. Neither are Uncharted quality, but both eminently playable, and often jaw-dropping when you take into account the breadth of the world it's showing you.

PC graphics are significantly better than on consoles, of course (and will only improve as the modders start playing around with it). On the other hand, you won't hear UI complaints from console players like you're hearing from the PC players.

Go look up grandmaster's old post on B3D, he is Richard Ledbetter the creator of DF. Then go read such comparisons as FFXIII when he is practically crying. He loves to let his personal preference drip into subjective write ups. You can see it clear as day in just about all his articles.

He is fine with objective numbers (most of the time), but then he adds subjective commentary that are completely unnecessary. I've been following the guy since before he created DF, he has a clear love for the 360. The only time he gives the PS3 any fair write up is when he has an exclusive interview with a PS3 only developer.

Ah, now I see what you're saying. You're right. There is indeed a difference between the raw (objective) data and the resulting (subjective) judgment on DF's comparisons. What I respect, though, is that he always points out the difference between what's data and what's judgment. So I don't really care about the ultimate judgment call. The DF write-ups are really good at showing how/why others might come to a different conclusion about which is the "better" version.

For example, I still prefer the look of the PS3 version of GTAIV with its blurrier post-processing filter. Same objective data, different subjective opinion. I suppose there are also those who might feel the same way about Skyrim.

I recently helped a good friend get started and they really seemed to help him out so I figured I'd share with anyone who's just starting the game.

  • After Riverwood, head to Whiterun to progress main story's quests chain until the Jarl honors you. Then join either The College of Winterhold if you're a Mage, The Companions in Whiterun if you're a Fighter or The Theives Guild in Riften if you're an Assassin/Theif and run through the entire quest chain. Completing any of these yield valuable loot, items and abilites that you'll use for the rest of your playthrough.

  • At some point you absolutely HAVE to do ALL of the Daedric quests.

  • Talk to every Innkeeper about rumors. They always have a quest to give you, and some start particularly great quest.

  • Once you're done with your first guild, just do whatever you feel. However don't fast travel, use a carriage or even ride a horse. It sounds nuts I know but doing any of these cuts the opportunity of serendipitous discovery. There is SO MUCH content sprinkled throughout Skyrim and doing any of those forfeits the opportunity of exploration and discovery. Even a horse, at least I found, just gets in the way. It's just easier to run around, beside the horses in Skyrim are way too aggressive and get in the way.

  • If you're interested in getting wealthy then get good at lockpicking, sneaking and pickpocketing and head to the very rich city of Solitude.

  • I think everyone should invest in Enchanting very early on because once you reach 100 you can enchant an item with two abilities. Leveling Enchanting quickly is actually not difficult either. Just use soul gems (sold or found all over the world). Just purchase some empty soul gems and head out questing with Soul Trap in hand. CAst the spell, kill enemies and fill the gems up. Until you’re level 100, just use crappy items and the smallest soul gems. Plus, if you have the money, the trainers at the College are a REALLY great source too.

Oh and one more thing, anything you double-enchant will sell for A LOT more!

  • If you’re running through the wilderness and you see an icon resembling a dragon on your compass--check it out. Listen matey, there be dragons ahead! Well actually its just one dragon, but there will also be a new Shout to learn as well. PLUS a treasure chest with some awesome loot.

  • Keep in mind Magic skills only gain experience if an enemy is around, even restoration spells

  • If you have a ton of stuff to sell, I found the Blacksmith (two vendors) and general goods guy in Whiterun to be the most efficient way of selling things quickly. Though the vendors have a finite amount of money, just waiting for 48 hours will repleish their pool. This is how I got rid of 600lbs of dragon bones and scales.

  • There are only two people in the world who will buy stolen stuff (Winterhold/Riften), however if you get your speech skill high enough any vendor will buy stolen goods.

  • Last and most importantly, explore the world as you please. These are mere suggesting, and Skyrim is probably the most adaptive worlds every created so you can't go wrong. Whatever direction you decide to go at the crossroads, you're guaranteed to have a great time.

All excellent points, except that you don't have to have enemies around to level up Magic...at least not for Illusion. You can run around casting Muffle like crazy to quickly get to 100. That's what I did.

You also don't need enemies around to level up Restoration...you just have to be injured and actually be healing yourself.

I've started to encounter some major framerate issues... anyone else? I think I might stop playing for a bit and wait for the patch (I need the sleep anyways).

Considering that this same issue already happened in Oblivion and Fallout 3, you would think that Bethesda would have figured it out by now. Unacceptable.

And so long as we consumers are prevented from returning games to retailers when we run into serious bugs like this, it'll only continue to get worse. Patches aplenty.

Sometimes this game feels real good, other times I swear I'm playing Fallout 3. Music sounds the same, the quest from the freaky little kids, etc. Walking around the town looking for quest people and listening to their speeches is the worst part of the game. My game also randomly dumps to the desktop on my PC too.

I take it you've never played any other Bethesda RPGs? Of all of their RPGs, Skyrim is least like Fallout 3. Most of the music is taken directly from Morrowind and Oblivion, with just a few new (awesome) tracks. The overarching plot is almost an exact replica of Morrowind, and many of the side quests are very similar to those in Daggerfall and Oblivion. If you were to take away all the character interaction, you'd be left with a really terrible combat system. So if talking/reading/listening isn't your idea of "fun" in an RPG, then you're in for a world of hurt in Skyrim.

My save file is at ~8.5MB. I'm starting to have framerate problems. They're usually limited to my excursions into Skyrim proper. If I'm in a dungeon, town, etc....it's usually smooth. I do have lag when entering the menu during an Autosave...or just running around during an autosave.

To be clear, it hasn't gotten to the hot steamy mess that was FNV. For the most part, the game remains very playable. Regardless, and as others have said, it's unacceptable. I'd hoped Bethesda had learned from their mistakes. Maybe they haven't. Skyrim is such an amazing game, though, that I'm willing to wait and see if the patch will remedy things. I am a little worried what my game will look like when my save exceeds 10MB.

I think the point is Fallout 3 and Skyrim feel made in the same mold. Maybe it's a Bethesda style thing, but there are times I feel like I'm playing a re-skin of Fallout 3 (not a bad thing just an observation). I would say, except for the artwork and music, that Skyrim and FO3 are extremely similar in most respects.

Ya, they look, sound and feel very similar. I just miss VATS

I see some weird stuff in this game. A dragon attack a town I was at, my horse tanked the dragon while I killed it from the side. I also used my stun voice and somehow agro'd another horse which I had to kill to get it to stop head butting me.

I kept hitting R2 during the first couple hours myself.

The horses are not frail in this game. Riding out in the snow and didn't notice an ice wraith (?) until it was attacking. Horse was hit 3 times before I dismounted and I thought she was toast. By the time my weapons are ready the monster is dead and my horse gives me this look like "what?". Nice to know I won't have to spend a grand every time I take the horse out somewhere.

Well, sure. But my point is that Skyrim is actually more like Oblivion and Morrowind. It would be more correct to say that Fallout 3 is a lot like Skyrim, Oblivion, and Morrowind than the other way around.

I'm simply guessing that folks who make the comparison (that Fallout 3 is like Skyrim) haven't played other Bethesda RPGs.

Well it has been Fallout 3 and NV in the last few years, so memories of Oblivion have faded. Frankly, all their games are so similar any differences is splitting hairs.

I strongly disagree. But that's opinions for you.

And let's do our best to forget NV ever existed. And let's all agree to blame Obsidian for that POS, not Bethesda.

Anyone who gets Plus (or Qore) should check out Ep. 42 (November) for some great Skyrim screenshots. Ever since they allowed saving the screens to your HDD the episodes of Qore have become a great source of hi-res wallpapers. At least Qore is useful for something, right?

Get into the screenshots section (every game has some) tap start, then X when you find the one you want. The Syrim ones are nicely done and look good on a large HDTV. There are some concept art, but about half are game shots and they look great. I like to keep at least a good wallpaper of the game I'm working on up, and these are well done.

Just a friendly note if you like Skyrim but never bother with Qore.

i wonder if Skyrim uses the engine of Imfamous 2. how much better it would have been.

Skyrim is now like 4 gigabyte or something. has low framerate. i played it at a friend of mine, but i find it a very buggy, basicly a beta version of a game.

why does bethesda needs to crunch everything while you have a 50gigabyte bluray to fill?

it really does not make sence to me.

is there any sandbox game that moves and looks better then Imfamous 2 on the PS3?

sure skyrim has a huge dragons. but i have seen never something bigger then the godzilla kind of thing in imfamous 2. and imfamous 2 stays smooth in framerate. so it shows Ps3 can easily handle these kind of games.
