Official 70"+ LCD thread - Page 48

I've got a 9 year old 65 inch Mits CRT projection (cost $2700 on sale) with DVI. Optical output from my Onkyo takes care of the built-in speakers and the hdmi in from blue-ray and cable box and component from Wii all go to my surround system with no problem. Picture's still good, but an 80" flat screen would be a very nice upgrade and I'm seriously thinking of getting one come Black Friday or so.

Today we talk of 65-70" sets as being large, but 20 years from now, those may be considered small with 100" 4x HD sets being typical. Of course aesthetics and available space play a factor, but if a 100" TV sold for $1000, I think we would be able to make room for it! Even most wives wouldn't object at that price!

Just wanted to follow up on the quote I made 17 months ago. Its amazing how the TV landscape has changed since then! 90" Sharp, 84" 4k Sony, 80" Sharp for < $4k. 70" Sharp around $2k. We are definitely seeing larger TV's becoming more affordable and commonplace. Do they still make 55's??

Lots more choices from Sharp, yes.

But a $25,000 Sony? Hardly all that exciting.

Oh, and Sharp is on the cusp of bankruptcy.

^^^I'd really hate to see Sharp go, hope they can work something out but I'm not an MBA. Looking back a bit longer to 2002 or so we've lost a few brands that produced some of the best sets on the market--Pioneer, Hitachi, and for all intents and purposes Mitsubishi.

Interesting, wonder how this will stack up to the alternatives. smile.gif

There's already a thread dedicated to discussion of this 550 series Sony including the 70". Apparently its an LG sourced panel and folks don't see overly optimistic about its performance vs other comparable sets on the market. I'll wait and see of course smile.gif
