The "Official" Optoma 3DXL Owner's thread - Page 55

Folks I love this forum. I have a 100" screen and a benq mx 511. My 3dxl should be here Monday. One thing I havent seen alot of talk about, is gaming. Can anyone here let me know how well 3d gaming works? Is it worth the investment? I am more into 3d for games than movies.

Thanks all

Rob

Hi all

first off .. "ROB" 3D gaming is just as good as 3D movies.. I've been playing Halo CE Anniversary, since xbox got the sterescopic update, and its awesome. Also, Crysis 2 is really good and so is Gears Of War 3

---------------------------

Now, for my reason on posting here
I have the 3D-XL and my hdmi receiver is not hdmi 4.1 (3D) this didnt bother me because the movies i watch are all half SBS on my WDTV Live, the cable is SBS and my xbox360 games were SBS .. until Halo which is sterescopic ... So now i am moving hdmi cables around to bypass the receiver.
I thought i would run both my WDTV Live and Xbox into the 3D-xL input 1 and 2, and then out to my receiver (since the output will be only hdmi 1.3 there should be no problem. But there is a HUGE problem. When i run the WDTV live into my 3D-XL there is no sound passed through .. is this normal? If so this is a major mistake on the part by Optoma. Because i have no way of making this work without buying a new 3D compatible rfeceiver (and that aint happening) anyone can comment on their 3D-XL and if it is passing HDMI audio through?

Just a small terminology FYI. Halo Anniversary (And Batman Arkham City, and Assassin's Creed Revelations) is Frame Packed. Earlier games were SBS. All are stereoscopic. Frame packed is just live over/under, except that vertical resolution is not halved. So the over/under frame is twice as tall (2160p!) as your single 1080p frame. Other than that, it's the same as SBS.

Also I thought if a HDMI 1.3 PJ was labeled 3D Ready, it meant it would work with either the 3D-XL or VP3D1.

I was told multiple times that the PLED-W500 was capable of 1280x720@120Hz over HDMI and would work with the VP3D1 by several Viewsonic reps.

I get the Optoma splash screen and 2D passes thru, letting me watch a movie ok. But, when I try to watch 3D Blu-ray, I get an "out of display range" with side by side selected.

I've tried to navigate support for an updated driver, but could not find one to download.

And yes, the PS3 is up to date and has been recently used for 3D Blu-ray playback, same for the HDMI cables.

So either Viewsonic lied, my 3D-XL is broke or I need a firmware update. Or?

After trying new cables, I've returned the 3D-Xl. Unfortunately there were no new firmware updates from either Viewsonic nor Optoma to correct the incompatibility.

Well I got mine today. Arrived with the latest firmware. However the glasses were the first generation ones.

My projector is a BenQ MX 511 that I scored for $299.99 from staples this year.
My amp is a a Yamaha HTR-3036 3d Ready that i got for $249 this year.
My screen is an Elite Screen I purchased from Dell.ca for $99

I have my PS3 and 360 both going through the amp with a single output going to the Optoma 3d-Xl and then a feed to the projector.

For me movies are second. First and formost it's about the games. Here is what I have tried thus far.

Gran Turismo 5.
Motorstorm Apocalypse
MLB The Show 11

and on 360
Crysis 2 and Halo Aniv.

So far, I am really impressed. I am amazed at the depth I feel, and the emersion. The graphics are snappy and brightness is not an issue. I am going to do more testing once my kids go to bed, but as of now, really impressed.

Now I need to buy 4 pairs of DLP link glasses. Anyone got any suggestions on reasonably prices options? The Optoma set is a little too much when I need to get four.

Thanks guys.

I hate those big ugly optima glasses
I ordered the VIP 3D dlp link glasses from consignia.ca
They are $64.99 small , black and light weight
They are like the dlp link ultra clears , only not as heavy and don't have that green tint

Children of Eden is MINDBLOWING in 3D! By far the best 3D experience of any film or game out there!

You might look at the True Depth DLP Link rechargeable 3D glasses, they also have a invert sync signal function built in that can be handy. I have not used them personally but I've seen good reviews so far.
And just like that my AMP won't send the signal now. As soon as I switch to 3d, it just keeps looking for signal. If I take the HDMI and plug directly to the projector, all is ok.
Anyone come across any good deals on dlp link glasses today?
in case anyone is looking for information on a BENQ MW512, i have this projector running with a Optoma 3D-XL via PS3 and PC with AMD GPU.. works perfect all movies and games with IZ3D look amazing, apart from some films been dark, i can fix this with Power DVD11.. I would say the 3d image is better than my local cinema
post #1633 of 1719
Hi all,

How can I test if my SBS button works?
When I press it nothing happens.
I tried to sent a Top-bottom or a Left-right signal with Bino, but nothing works.

Thanks
If you have an xbox 360 with Call of Duty Black Ops - it sends side-by-side and the sbs button made that go 3D for me. That was the only time I ever used it.
Hi there, i got my 3d-xl the other day to use with my HD65 with the 3d update, but i dont have any success.
Ive connected my Xbox directly to the 3d-xl and startet Gears of war 3 and turned on 3d ingame and hit the sbs button on the 3d-xl. The hd65 then turns 3d mode on and sais the signal is 720p 120hz. But the glasses dont activate and the image doesnt look like its 3d. It looks like only one 2d image and not a stereoscopic one.
Same thing happens when i put in Batman arkham city. The game does not use sbs, when i turn on stereoscopic ingame the 3d-xl recognizes it and switches to 3d, but again i dont see 2 overlayed images and the glasses wont activate.
Am i doing something wrong or could my 3d-xl be faulty?

Update: I found the problem. The hd65 stands pretty high on a shelf but is not upside down, and i needed a pretty high keystone correction setting. As soon as i turn down the keystone ceorrection, the glasses activate and it all works. But now of course my image is messed up. Can anyone relate to that problem and has any workaround ideas?

Turn it upside down?
never ever use keystone correction if you can help it. Fix your mounting location for sure.

I have my acer 5360 on a high shelf and simply stuck some rubber feet from Lowes on the top of it and flipped it upside down. It works just fine that way.
when i turn on my 3d xl it always comes on in 3d sbs mode. then i have to press the button and wait for it to go to 3d t&b and then press again to make it go to 2d.

is there a way so that when i turn it on it comes to 2d mode by default ?
don't turn it on. It has passthrough.
is that true...? because till i don't turn on the 3d xl my projector only displays optoma projector logo. i have a non-hdmi avr.

my connection is--->

Video : bluray player > optoma 3d xl > optoma hd 65. (hdmi)
Audio : bluray player > avr (optical)

if i don't turn on 3dxl how will i get video ?
I could be wrong. I guess the other option is never turn it off.
Whatever it is, I never have to push the sbs button to get it to work in 2D.

3dxl always defaults to 2D on powerup. HDMI just takes forever to lock properly.
Oh, yeah, you might not be waiting long enough. It is like 10 seconds to lock/
post #1644 of 1719
i figured it out. the 3d xl comes on in the last mode used if the power to the mains is switched off before power to the 3d xl box is switched off.

Oops, that's correct - I was thinking of the 3D Bee.

HDMI does take forever sometimes, tho, and that's something to watch out for.

I'm a newb to 3d so I need some advice. I have an HD66 and i'm ready to buy the 3dxl. I know that the washed out color of DLP Link cannot compare to the contrast of IR Emitter. Some of you say that the Ultra 3d Heaven emitter (Samsung $19) works with 3Dxl. Now what I want to know is, when you turn all the components on: (3d bluray player > 3dXl> emitter/glasses> HD66 projector) What option do you put on the 3d menu? I know it gives you the DLP Link mode and the Nvidia Mode. Do you choose the Nvidia mode to enable the IR emitter? Anyone with similar setup can help.

simply put, yes . NVIDIA mode is designed for their IR glasses but is equaly applicable to any other IR glasses tech when used with the HD66. It does nothing to the emitter in this case though as the emitter is plugged into the 3dxl not the projector. The mode is used to suit the tint of the glasses as far as I can see. All the DLP link mode does is generate the flash for dlp sync (ie no emitter) which gives the washed out look to the naked eye that otherwise looks fine behind the glasses. I have a / b'd contrast levels on the same indoor / outdoor scene nvidia vs dlp link on a chapter from the 3d version of Avatar under nvidia vision and my htpc. From a behind the glasses perspective I found it really hard to pick a difference betweeen the two techs to be honest. Generally I prefer the nvidia's as they stay in sync more consistently, dont ever need to be inverted and are rechargeable.

For your interest I also have the 3dtv corp emitter that works with different types of IR glasses which i use with the 3dxl for gaming etc. Something to note is that I have seen some ghosting occasionally when using the nvidia glasses, the 3dtv corp emitter and the 3dxl but no ghosting when using nvidia glasses, the nividia emitter and 3d vision with my htpc. The way it looks to me is a slightly different level of contrast is being used by the 3dxl which results in the occassional ghost when using the nvidia glasses with it when compared to dlp link. Perhaps other IR glasses when used with the 3dxl would not exhibit this characteristic due to a difference in tint or whatever. Optoma doesn't officially support the nvidia's - I think this is mainly because the standard nvidia emitter doesn't work rather than the glasses though . In my case I don't find it particularly distracting and am very happy to use either type of glasses with the 3dxl. My parents seeing the hd66 / 3dxl / nvidia's in action for the for the first time last night ( Grand Canyon Imax disc) thought the picture just beautiful and were blown away. Bit long winded but hope that helps

Cheers

Hi, I've been reading through the thread to try to work out if my Samsung glasses will work with this Optoma unit, but I'm confused by what I've read....

My setup connected via HDMI:
HTPC-->Onkyo HTX-22DX-->Optoma HD65

(I assume the 3D-XL should go between the Onkyo surround amp & the projector?)

I have some Samsung glasses already for use with my TV: SSG-3300GR and SSG-3100GB - will these work with the Optoma or do I need an to buy an emitter too?

If I have to buy an emitter, does using that mean that the Optoma glasses that come in the box with the 3D-XL won't work at the same time?

Thanks

Here you go:

1. Provided the onkyo surround amp supports hdmi 1.4 then yes your config should be correct. Whilst its a little box you have there, the amazon blurb suggests it does. Fyi the 3dxl has sensitivity to pass through of 2d signals via it I have noticed. My parents pioneer 520 was fine to pass through 2d/3d from the ps3 to the 3dxl and on to the hd66 but the 3dxl couldn't do anything with the incoming cable tv 2d signal when trying to route that via the pioneer (foxtel boxes are a bit dodgy in Australia though so I'm not convinced it wasn't some problem there). In case you wondered 2d cable direct to the projector from the pioneer was fine. The problem seemed to be the 3dxl. I'm possibly behind on firmware.

2. Possibly, but yes you would need to try the 3dtv corp emitter ( or another one) and see if it has a compatible IR signal. The glasses have to sync to something. If your glasses are a really new model they might have difficulty though. I would ask 3dtv corp first. The emitter gets plugged into the 3dxl by the way not the projector

3. if you get the samsungs to work after getting a compatible emitter you COULD use these and the Optoma DLP link glasses at the same time. However the DLP link flash will significantly wash out the picture for those using the IR glasses. Personally when I show off my 3d to guests I want everyone to have the same awesome 3d experience (including me ) therefore I don't find compromising the picture quality for some viewers acceptable and dont mix my protocols. Other viewers on this forum are fine with this i have noticed so ymmv. It depends on how many sets you need to be using at the same time I guess. I got the emitter so I could use my nVidias since i got quite a few off ebay for a good price. The cost of the emitter is not that far off the cost of two pair of cheapo DLP glasses though. As I noted earlier, in ghosting terms I think DLP may slightly out perform IR when using the 3dxl - however that could just be my nVidia glasses.

Hope that helps

Cheers
