I have the GT720 connected to a GTX460 nvidia card. In order to get 3d, I bought the 3D vision kit and used a config file to tell my htpc that the projector is capable of 120hz. Without this config file the projector is stuck at 60hz --- which won't work in 3D. No firmware upgrade needed if you use this "spoof" config file.
Using this free config file is a work around but it does the job. The 3DXL pretty much eliminates the need for this file and will allow you to hook up PS3's or stand alone BD players, whereas the config file and 3D vision is HTPC only. Hope it makes sense what I just said, and imho, the 3D via HTPC is good enough. 3D is cool and fun for a bit but I got tired of it. Plus when the HTPC is in 120hz, the resolution (when looking at your desktop icons or web browsing) is kind of ass; really dark and hard to read (even on my 150" screen sitting 12 feet back) it's blurry. I found out weeks later that the image/screen looks much better at 60hz if you're going to view regular 2D, its more clear and brighter but no where near the quality of my 1080p Epson 8100. That PJ is like having a gigantic computer monitor it's that clear. The GT720 looks like crap when trying to websurf and looks far worse in 120hz 2D mode and so-so in 60hz but it's still crap because of the 1280 x 800 resolution at 720p vs. 1920 x 1080 on the Epson. However, when playing movies through the GT720, it looks pretty sweet.
The 3DXL is cool if you're going stand alone player/PS3 route only. It probably won't be necessary to have the crisp clarity needed to view text, only for movies. I'm happy with the HTPC 3D setup so i'll most likely skip the 3DXL because it's not really necessary for my use. Playing 3D BD on the HTPC looks great and with PowerDvD and TMT5, you can use the 2D to 3D converter to watch any DVD movie (or converted blu-ray to .avi file) in 3D. It'll be psuedo 3D but it is pretty cool for the first 20 minutes or so. I especially like watching the old Tron movie in this mode, but like someone else mentioned, it's like some acid trip ( I guess, never used that drug) where straight lines are all curvy and wavy but when you wear the glasses it looks semi-normal and there is depth to the movie.
BTW, you set the GT720 to DLP LINK and you can use those type of glasses even when you have the Nvidia 3D Vision emitter & glasses running. The DLP Glasses are slightly darker than the Nvidia but this is necessary due to the DLP LINK signal being projected on the screen,which makes the movie look washed out, but you can correct this using the contrast and brightness controls. This is how those glasses sync with the projector while the Nvidia glasses sync to the emitter.
I was really surprised when playing a 3DBD movie. At 720p, it looked just as good as any other HD signal I seen. I mean, after a moment you forget about the details and just enjoy the movie for what it is and considering its clear and on a BIG screen, who cares if it ain't 1080p? I'll guaranty any friend, family member or aquaintance won't care. They'll be too busy with their mouth open and in awe (same goes for wives. My wife was none the wiser about all the technical stuff, she was just impressed by the 3D). Now only if there was more quality movies...I wouldn't be so bored. I actually turned off Open Season 3D after 20 minutes. Dumbest movie I ever bought. We ended up watching Shrek 4 in converted mode, but then I switched it to 2D because it was getting a little strainful on my eyes. 2D wasn't bad but wasn't that great in 120hz. I didn't figure out the 60hz vs. 120hz clarity difference until much later.
Anyhow, sorry for such a long write up but I notice that some folks on this forum will give you the minimal amount of info when asked and sometimes not answer you at all. I figure i'll give you everything I know and let you pick and choose what info you need even if it's TMI.
