The Lord Of The Rings Extended - Page 3

Paramount is splitting their upcoming The Ten Commandments VistaVision restoration over two discs for optimal video quality.

You need to do this with the extended cuts of LOTR, Warner Bros.!!!!!!

Some great black and white films with wide video dynamic range and contrast brings out some really fantastic detail that usually mushes together (to our eyes) when color is involved. Good stuff.

I feel like I've vastly mis-represented myself, if this is the sort of comment my posts are getting. I'm a HUGE fan of classic films, and consider myself somewhat of a film historian. When I say "quaint", I'm referring to what I believe to be "general public perception". I'll take B&W classics over modern films ANY day of the week!

this has probably been discussed already, but what would you guys think of putting Martin Freeman as young Bilbo in the FotR flashbacks in the EE and since we already have the original Ian Holm shots on the TE blurays? have they already started principal photography on Hobbit? seems doable.

Yes it has, and I still don't care.

Would pretty much guarantee I would never, *ever* purchase these films.

I think they should put Sean Connery's face in every james bond flick that came after him, or maybe the other way around, daniel craig's face in dr. no!

He probably loves that new Volkswagen commercial with the Donald O'Connor and Gene Kelly faces pasted onto the CGI legs.

I think they should replace Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and Red Dragon with a digitally-aged Gaspard Ulliel...

First time I read this I read it as Morgan Freeman - and I don't think that would work...

It's been hard for me to hold off on LOTR for this long but there's no way I was going to support the TE-only release.

The best way is to do the double disc. The films are already edited to support 2 discs with the fade to black, no sense changing that. They are good break points and lets you either split the movie between 2 nights or stretch your legs to change the disc.

Looking at ROTK I don't think there would be room to keep the average video bitrate at even 20Mbps (audio wise there's a lossless track, other languages, commentary, etc. in addition to other fluff on the disc). With lots of action, sweeping shots, and super detailed scenes I just don't think it would cut it.

I can tell you the TE of ROTK (and the other 2 as well) BD suffers from compression problems.
The EEs MUST be done differently or there will be a lot of complaints.
Its not compression that is a problem with the TE. Its the shape of the master.

Compression was quite problematic with all three films, to my eye. Lots of mushy blocky grain (very typical of Warner blu's). The ROTK master seemed pretty solid.

No. Replace Anthony Hopkins with Anthony Daniels. Imagine him in full C3P0 costume delivering those lines and wearing the faces of his victims.

These will surely have to be reencoded. I can't see them just re-encoding the new bits and pasting them in. That would be... bad.

The shape of the master they are encoding from is critical. You can't look any better than your master, and an digital compression will only call attention to flaws in the source.

If they did 40GB for video and 10GB for audio, they could do around 21Mbps. I'd rather have a single disc. 21Mbps can look good enough for me if handled properly.

I've been waiting for the EEs so long that I don't want to settle for "good enough." I want something that is superb and amazingly stunning. These films deserve the best transfer and encoding possible.

So did the theatricals, but we didn't get that now did we?

Here Here!
It all comes down to what shape the master is in. Bitrate doesnt help much if the flaws are in the master. If Gladiator managed to go bellow 20 on avarage. So can LOTR.

Yeah, you pretty much did. Any problems anyone has with the transfers have more to do with the post-production process on the films and not the transfers themselves. They look better than they did in theaters. I wouldn't expect the EE's to look any different really.
Has any progress been made on the increased disc storage? I recall sometime back there was talk about fitting about 66GB on a dual layered disk with only the need of a firmware update for compatibility. The extra 16 GB could be put to good use with the EEs.
I would be surprised if the EE's get remastered. I think we will get the same quality as the theatricals. I personally thought FOTR was the worst of the three, and ROTK and the TT were pretty good.

Can't wait for the EE's! Selling my cheaply purchased theatricals to my brother-in-law who prefers them to the EE's.
I severely hope these films get remastered! They need it. Barely an upgrade from the dvd and reminds me of most blurays in thier first year of existence. http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...ess=#vergleich Mouse over the screenshots to see the jump in PQ from dvd to bluray. $h!++y.
I don't think we'll see a remaster or any involvement from the filmmakers. We will just get 7/8/9 year old transfers from the original EE releases, along with the extra two DVDs of special features per film in standard def.
