The more I read the more I think I should ditch 7.1 and go with 5.1...

A few years ago I bought an onkyo 7.1 HTIB. At the time I was very content with it, but recently began to feel it was lacking...well...everything.

I ordered a pair of 50 series polk towers and a polk cs1 center, and now have a ed a2-300 on the way. Now I just have to decide what do do with the rears.

I plan on going with the polk 30's cause they are on sale right now...but do I do 2 or 4.

My room is about 23 x 14 and has a hallway opening, an opening to the dining room, and a little rectangle added on that goes to the front door.

My 52" lcd is centered up in the room with the main couch centered right across from it about on the wall. There is about 12 ft between the tv and the couch.

Right now I have the rear surrounds behind the couch on the wall at about 5 ft 10 inches tall, and I have the rear sides on the walls opposite the couch. Like this paint illustration...The sides are the same height. The couch reclines, so there is 8 to 10" gap between the couch and the wall.

So...should I ditch the 2 speakers on the wall behind the couch and just go with a 5.1 setup using the locations on the walls opposite the couch (beside the entrance to dining room and in the corner between the couch and love seat?

I think you're right.
I'd use the speakers on the side walls for side surrounds, and eliminate the rears.
maybe use those for height/wides?

I would have to agree; it appears your LP may be too close to the back wall to enjoy the full benefit of 7.1. If $$$ is not a factor you can try 7.1, and go down to5.1 if not pleased with the results.

well yeah with couch on wall that 7.x does not benefit. For my current setup which is also 7.x...the 7 comes in the form on wides instead or rears..atleast until I can get the couch off the wall then I go 9.2.

Definately go with 5.1 in that setup in that room. If possible I would consider moving the right surround in closer to the couch as well if you can. You could use good inceiling speakers, that would be a decent alternative to having an in-room speaker sitting out in the middle of the room. Though if that is the bottom story of a two story house that could mean quite a lot of sheetrock work. If you have attic space above, it's pretty easy though. You could also place the rears on the back wall if you use some good onwalls. I would recommend dipoles in that case though.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the feedback guys. I will order one set of surrounds and call it a day.
