Custom Poster Frames - 24" X 36" or 27" x 40"?

Hello everyone!!

Have a dilemma here, having my trim crew building custom Knotty Alder poster frames to match the rest of my trim and don't know which dimensions I should build them at. These frames will be made for easy removal of the poster as I like to change them regularly.

Should I go with a 24" x 36" frame which gives me more options (many movie posters come in both 24" x 36" and 27" x 40") and just cut down the 27" x 40" to fit if there is no 24" x 36 available? From the 27" x 40" posters I have now they look to be easily cut down to a 24" x 36" poster with no real viewable poster damage.

Or should I have them built to 27" x 40" and limit myself to only 27" x 40" posters?

I like the first option, but don't know if anyone else has done this and have any suggestions based on their experience.

Thanks in advance!

I am building mine 27x40 as that is the size of most real movie posters. I do not recall seeing any 24x36 poster at actual theaters. Also, the bigger size posters look so much better to me.

24x36 is the size of many reproductions. You get a fair number of titles in that size where the price of the original is through the stratosphere.

27x40 is the common size of posters printed since 1980. Before 1980, the common size was 27x41.

I build my standard frames at 27x41 as that will hold everything. I am planning to build some lightboxes for double sided and those will be 27x40 as all double sided posters are the newer type.

Of course, there are many other sizes of posters out there as well, but 27x40/41 are by far the most common.

Also, if you worry about resale at all, don't cut down posters. Don't dry mount them either.

So what do you do when you want to use a 24" x 36" in your 27" x 40" frame? Do you use a matting???

I Never thought about that as a solution to when I want to use a 24" by 36".
