WAF?! Really?!

Thread Starter
I often see guys writing " if the wife would let me, i really want this", or "cant get the sub I really want because of WAF"! C'mon men...are you really gonna work in circles, or have an inferior sounding HT because your wife will give you the silent treatment for three days?! My wife knows that my HT room, is just that....MY room. If I put in shag carpet and 12 subwoofers and just had beanbag chairs for furniture...she wouldnt care. Buy what you really want....she'll get over it! BTW...this is just meant for fun...

Right on, brother-you should Tweet this out.

WAF, yes really. Most problems is because of lack of money which leads to smaller home and more shared space. A dedicated HT room where the wife doesn't have to go is great but many of us put our big speakers in the living room in shared space.

Silent treatment for three days? I wish that were the case for me. My wife will complain and complain until my ears can't take it anymore and I end up regretting my purchases. I made many purchases without approval and have regretted it. I admit I went a little extreme sometimes. Put big gym equipment in the living room of a one bedroom apartment. I had to hear how big my power rack and weights were for over two years.

But really, it's all about compromise. I'm moving a lot from small apartment to apartment, but when we buy a townhome in a couple years and have a little more space, then I'm buying whatever I want.

Is your HT also your family room or living room?
When it comes down to it there is people who can design a room and people who can not. To me its little about WAF and more about having a little style. Big ugly subs in a family room show little style. Even Custom HT rooms should HIDE anything UGLY.

I would also choose 17 years of marriage and 2 awesome kids over any silly audio hobby but that is just me

I've decided that at my young age Im a very lucky man, not only does my wife let me buy and do what I want with little to no nagging, I also have a fantastic basement filled with all the toys I want.... and can afford without loosing the house

Having your own room is the key here! My wife still complains that I spend more time with the room than her . My room still hides all the speakers and subs which are just big and ugly. I used to have lots of speakers in an apartment but they were much smaller and nicer looking.

I've had a month-long argument going with my wife over my left surround speaker placement. because of speaker wiring considerations, I originally had it against my back wall, but was close to my left back surround speaker (7.1 setup). I finally was able to move it over where it should be, on the rear side. She hates it there because she can see the speaker cable running along the floor baseboard. When it was in the back, there was a table that hid the wire. She didn't care much about the sound, as she doesnt see that wire.

IMO, it depends on the wife/girlfriend, and when the AV equipment enters the picture. Some women are more accepting if you have the equipment prior to the relationship (and those that aren't, well, you learn it pretty early on and can make the determination whether she's worth it or not.) I think that's a big difference compared to being in a relationship already and then bringing the AV stuff in.

I too have a difficult time with this "Waf" business. Seems in many cases the compromise is in the wrong direction.

Perhaps some have chosen the wrong waf er-I- mean wife.
Myself..........I chose wisely! Been married to this gem for 38 years. No matter what my interests are she just smiles and thinks it's great. Sometimes we have shared interests, like music and movies.

My room is in a separate building. So disturbing the wife or others is not an issue but then again my wife is usually in there with me!

I always get a kick out of reading these threads. Like others have posted some of us get lucky and find, I guess you could say, soul-mate. My system is in my family room and my wife simply states that she does not want to see any wires. Other then that I can have as many subs as I want (4 now) and as big as a display as I want. However when I told her I was considering a 83" display she just rolled her eyes and said "Now that is just silly." But she did not say no.

It`s not just whether she is worth it or not. Marriage takes alot comprimise, and As Ernstmach said, it seems like alot of these are made with the man getting the shaft. I`ve been married 11 yrs and in the beginning we had some disagreements about money as i am the spender in the marriage. We worked it out and get on great. I have several men in my family that seem like they are being drug around by their c#$%S. Their wives treat them more like their mommy than a wife, I refuse to live like that.

I have alot of nice equipment and for the most part my wife really enjoys it.
As long as i save money to pay cash and not run up the CC for new stuff, it`s no problem.

My 2.

The wife is usually in charge of the paint colors, furnishings, and kitchen. The husband usually gets the garage and basement. We don't have a basement, so I allowed my wife to choose any color for the electronics she wanted, as long as it was black.

I wasn't talking about marriage when I spoke about her "being worth it." I was talking about when you're in a new relationship and your girlfriend is, well, less than enthusiastic about your gear. That's when you can decide about her.

In a marriage, if you already have gear, you probably already know her attitude, and if you've been married for awhile and then want gear, yes, it can take some negotiation and taking a stand. But you should already have an idea as to how that will go by now, IMO. AV gear isn't the only thing couples have to work around.

Uh, you said wife/girlfriend in your post. Overall , i completely agree with you Tulpa. Alot of guys, when they are in a new relationship are too quick to make concessions to the new girl because well, you know why. they start thinking with another part of their body, i`ve have been guilty of this too

I agree. I'm probably MORE picky about the way my HT looks than my wife is. I like nice furniture grade finishes on things, wood colors that match, and keep my electronics out of sight in a cabinet. You can still get good satisfying sound out of small boxes, but it usually costs more money to do so. WAF does cost you more but I'm willing to pay a bit more to have something that sounds good and looks good at the same time.

Most of the time. There are different stages to a marriage as well. If you can get all this stuff during the young kids stage like myself I guess it isn't that bad.

I have a 6, 4, and one due in July.

Congrats on the next one.

When you are ready for Disney, come on down

So I am wondering with all that time you spend in YOUR room when did you find time for other adventures. Oh thats right, we can all find time for that sort of adventure.

Tell her it's a movie or the strip club. That way she's involved in the decision. Bet you would get the instead of the .

I have used that one before

I usually go in the theater when everyone goes to sleep and then I shake things up.

Yeah, but I also said, "prior to the relationship." Unless you have one of those wives who is cool with stuff for years and then one day decides to ride your case about it.

Which I don't doubt happens from time to time.

It does as things change in a person's life.

Yeah, but usually there are warning signs on the horizon at least.

They are hard to see sometimes. I have been with my wife for 23 years and we are different now from then for sure. It is all good and would not trade it for the world but it is not all positive at times. Don't forget the in laws.

My wife is pretty good about things but that's probably because she knows I'll use whatever I buy and it's not just a passing phase in my life.
But she does want me to conceal the surround speaker cables, wall mount the TV and paint the basement.

My problem with that is that once that is done, it becomes a shared space and not my cave anymore!

Plus my 20 month old son needs to be monitored especially around the sub!
