If they did that then in addition to the income tax, they'd also be liable for the capital gains taxes on the sale and the basis would be zero (since it didn't cost them anything) so the full amount of the sale price would be taxed and most likely at the highest short term cap gains rate since there's usually time limits on redeeming the prizes. eek.gif

But it's probably a moot point since most prizes of this nature are "non-transferable" and I doubt that AR is the exception that proves the rule.

I would imagine that trips are insanely difficult to sell, compared to vehicles and other stuff. Regardless, these are prizes and are taxed because of it. I don't want to go into it, but I do have a source from inside the race who told me.

I would guess that the "non-transferable" verbiage they generally use means that winners can't just have the prize initially given/transferred to someone other than themselves. The cost basis question is interesting though. If you initially paid the regular income tax on the fair market value of the prize could that reduce the basis to the net, after tax amount then? And the short term gain rate is just the regular income tax rate anyway so worst case you would pay regular tax rate twice. I suspect many people would not declare proceeds from private sales though... wink.gif

From this article I just googled it sounds like some times cash may be offered as an alternative on prizes too. At any rate, just like winning the lottery, the amount you end up with is always a lot less than it sounds like to begin with...

Amazing Race Host Phil Keoghan: A Famous Actor Hit On My 16-Year-Old Daughter At The Emmys

Access Hollywood – 14 hours ago

The "Amazing Race" host, whose show nabbed the Emmy for Best Reality Competition, brought teenage daughter Elle to the ceremony and she was a big hit with the crowd -- perhaps too big a hit for her father's taste!

"She's 16 years old, in high heels she's six feet, she was getting hit on by every man," Phil told Kit Hoover and Billy Bush on Thursday's Access Hollywood Live. "I mean, so many people [were hitting on her], and somebody famous too, by the way."

While Phil refused to divulge the name of the actor who tried to chat up his daughter, he did admit the man in question is on a "scripted" TV show.

"Did you get mad?" Kit asked.

"No, it was just weird," Phil answered. "She's my 16-year-old daughter. But, she's a woman now."

And the flirting wasn't Elle's only incident at the Emmys - she also fainted from the blistering September heat.

"She passed out at the end of an interview! Someone asked her what it was like being there and she turned to me and she's like, 'Dad, I feel faint' and she literally like, fainted in my arms," he said.

Another reality show host stepped in to help Phil tend to his daughter.

"Chris Harrison was actually there and he was really cool and the crew, they were really cool and they got a fan and some ice water and they got some towels and everything trying to cool her down," he said. "And then there was another actor whose daughter, [also] 16, literally like, on cue she fainted.

Adding, "So, now there [was] the two of them sitting on the stairs."

After reading that I had to check what the hoopla was about. Better get used to it Phil smile.gif. If you didn't know you probably wouldn't think she's that young really...

His wife on the left and Elle with the TAR emmy on the right.

She definitely doesn't look 16.

Diggin' the bow-tie.

Did anyone else crack up at the caption provided when the first team finished. The local greeter said "Hi.........welcome to Indonesia" but at the word "Hi" they had the following:

Hai
(Hello)

I get why, but was it even necessary?
Yeah I LOL'd at that part.

I also loved the part where the girls expected their driver to speak English. Glad to see they got what they deserved.

Another amazingly hard challenge. Put a coconut on your head have them cook some eggs, then you eat it.

The Indonesian cabbies sure racked up the kills. I'm awarding them a half-point for the assist on last weeks episode and a full point for the kill this week. biggrin.gif

Heck, as a viewer I get frustrated when somebody gets booted out because of bad cab drivers. I can only imagine how mad the ones are that such ineptness happens to.

To be honest though, they would have to. There is no way to know that if the person says Hi that in their language it meant hello, it could of meant, welcomg to our country, where is the bathroom? But seriously, just because it sounded like Hi, was no guarantee that it meant Hi. (plus it was spelled Hai) Which seemed like it shoudl sound like Hay to me instead.

I'd love to see them get even more cultural and include words that racers/others are saying with their translations below. A lot of times, you hear them saying "thank you" or "fast" but in the native language. I like how they put in the actual spelling of the word, too.

It's like Jeopardy and their anagrams category. They always show the original and correctly spelled words.

By the end the two blondes were getting on my nerves and I am glad to see the two fans of the show make it through even with the U Turn hampering them.
Brutal taxi for the blondes. Even worse, when they first got on it they were actually about 10 feet from that POS place! Verify brief shot of them getting on that cart and you could see the building in the background.

I wonder if this season will have another ludicrous product advertisement task for Ford. Pull over and you MUST use your foot to open the hatch of the all new Ford blah blah blah. As for tonight's show, OMG the twins are annoying, the monster truck people are next on my list of players that need to go. Telling the team they were lost when they got asked about being on the boat, I really wish they would of gone out after they did that.
I don't find the twins annoying at all .. I see two sisters that are supportive of each other, cheer each other on and are excited and happy to be on the Race .. and, they are playing a good game to boot .. the body shop bus challenge was a real challenge and she did a great job ..

Now, Mr Green Hair Monster Truck I can certainly do without ..
Agreed. The twins are fine. Plus they have an edge in South Asia, which I think you could kind of tell during the leg. My wife commented on the overfilled trains and people hanging and walking on the cars. My reply, "have you not seen other seasons of TAR when they go on the trains in India?!"
The only thing that annoys me about the twins is the constant screaming. If they would just tone it down, they actually seem like fun people.

The looks and comments (especially from Lexi) at that bus challenge was quite comical. I do have to say I think there may have been different types of seats for the competitors. I don't remember who finished first, but the guy seemed to struggle picking them up as if they were really heavy. When the girl finished and went for the seats, she lifted them like they were nothing.

Agree on both counts.

But another episode with the constant screaming and I may change my tune. I wonder if that was there to give us a better sense of what the other teams deal with on a fairly constant basis.

I may change my tune as well .. wink.gif

Rooting for your team member in a challenge is kinda a Race tradition .. but the mocking "shot to the head" that what's her name mimed in the background was likely staged, IMO ..

I like the twins because they are really, really trying hard .. the over the top cheerleading is just part of it ..
Oh man those twins constant yelling the same thing, I couldn't do it and it would of gotten ugly if I was there. They need to go.
I enjoy the twins. I find them highly entertaining. I like the combo of the twins screaming and James making snide comments. I also have to give it up for them for finishing up near the top almost every time.
I thought the Chippendales had the best reaction to the twins when they replied "Sounds like Saturday night for us." When the twin was screaming "Long and Hard Trinie, Long and Hard." biggrin.gif

I think she might have actually been screaming 'twinny', because they are, after all, twins...just my opinion.

Ahhh, that makes sense. Yeah I couldn't really tell what the heck she was yelling since it didn't seem to be her real name I thought it was just some strange nickname.

Just FYI -- it was over 100 on the red carpet at the Emmys this year. I'm sure she wasn't the only one.
Painfully obvious this was going to be a non elimination leg since they didn't have any flights.
