Denon AVR-391 or Insignia NS-R5101AHD-A?

Trying to put a small home theater system together that will also sound good for music. Plan to use it 50/50 on movies and music. I am planning to get 2 small Energy Cb-5's and CC-5 center. I have a polk audio sub that I will use until i can get a new one. Budget is a big concern right now. I will hook up bluray and cable via HDMI, but would like for the receiver to not have to be on if I want just the TV speakers to work (is this called standby passthrough?). I would also like to get an ipod dock for which ever I choose. I know the Insignia says it isn't Ipod ready, but I read somewhere that the Onkyo ipod dock can be used with it. is this correct? With that said both of these receivers are nearly same in price this week. Which one? Should I bump up to the Denon 591? Is it worth the extra $150 price increase? Thanks!

You actually have to bump up to the 591 as the 391 does not offer HDMI Standby pass through.

Thanks! With that said, which one would be the better bet?

Denon AVRs offer the Audyssey MultEQ auto speaker calibration system so IMHO the 591 would be the better choice.

I tried both of these in my office for a week and the Denon went back even thought I paid less for it ($149 vs $179). Overall...
  • Insignia has HDMI menu overlay
  • Insignia has Audyssey
  • Insignia has Audyssey Dynamic EQ - (really like it for the office's low volume)
  • Insignia has (limited) rename-able inputs
  • Denon has 4 HDMI instead of 3 for the Insignia
  • Insignia has more optical inputs
  • TiVo knows the Denon and not the Insignia
  • Insignia has HDMI Pass-Thru
  • You can turn off the Denon's display but the power ring still glows
  • You can really dim but not turn off the Insignia's display
  • Insignia has binding posts for all speakers (they aren't real heavyweights)
My office isn't for sound quality so I can't really comment on that outside of Dynamic EQ certainly makes more of a difference than anything else. Losing the TiVo remote was big with the Insignia (I switched to my Harmony) but Dynamic EQ and the other features were just too much to give up.
