Power consumption when using Pre outs?

Hi all,

I am probably going to finally go to HDMI this year with a new projector and new AVR. Since I have been using a Denon for years with no complaints, I was going to continue this trend.

My question is about power consumption. I use the preouts on my Denon to drive a Sunfire Cinema amp. In my next setup, I will continue this but was wondering if anyone knows how AVRs handle power consumption? For example, with the AVR-3311CI, would it be generating 125W x 7 even though I'm not driving speakers, thus drawing more power than it really needs?

Cool, thanks for the quick answer too!

Keep in mind though that even when the AVR is powering the speakers, at average volume the load is generally <5W/CH.

Not to mention the fact that, even without the external amp, the 3311 is not capable of simultaneously pushing 7x125w either...

The AVR will likely consume quite a bit of power for all the non amp circuits. The amp circuits will consume some power unless your receiver has a way to shut down the amp section which most don't. I would guess it's a low percentage of the total consumed by all those other circuits though.
