*NORCO DRIVE TRAYS AND PROPER AIRFLOW*

If you own a Norco RPC-4220 or RPC-4224 server case, you may have noticed that the drive trays contain an ingenious slide mechanism to open or close the the front air vent, for the purpose of decreasing airflow to drive bays that are empty. After a bit of research and contacting Norco I confirmed that while these cases generally ship with trays defaulted *open*, at some points they have shipped with drive trays defaulted *closed*. Since these cases don't ship with any instructions, the danger is some people not noticing the slide mechanism, and mounting their drives into trays with closed vents - I did.

Check your vents! Any trays with drives, open it. Any trays without drives, close it.

Since the Norco cases intake air from the front, does dust build up in the HDD bays?

I am currently looking to quiet down my Norco 4220.

I feel it's overcooled for my modest usage. I pull out HDD's and they are not that warm at all.. even after recent usage.

It's a bit loud for a home server. I'd like to replace the 80mm fans with quieter 120mm and perhaps replace the back fans with slower speed ones that are quieter.

I am thinking I might either want to put a fan controller on the back with knobs in the PCI slot- or run the fans off the motherboard header for RPM control via OS.

Where exactly is this "slide mechanism"

I've never paid attention to changed anything.

On the inside front of each drive tray, you should notice a slotted vent that can be moved from side to side - one side opens the vent, the other side closes it.

I do not have any dust inside mine. But it's in my office and only a month old.

Just slide the piece with the vertical vent slots left or right to open or close the vent:

Vent closed from the back:

They must have. Both of my Norco cases have trays that look like the photos I posted.

Just get the Norco 120mm fan adapter and some reasonably quiet fans. In each of my Norco chassis, I'm using 2 Scythe SP0825FDB12M 80mm fans in the back and 3 SY1225SL12SH 120mm fans behind the drives. They're all connected to motherboard fan connectors and the systems run reasonably quiet. Both of are in a rack in my basement, so I don't have a requirement for them to be silent (and they aren't), but these fan replacements brought the noise down to a very reasonable level. With the stock fans, I could easily hear them anywhere on the 1st floor of my house (with the cellar door closed). With the replacement fans, I need to be within several feet of them to really notice the noise. If you need the fans to be near silent, you'll either need to reduce the voltage running to them or find some quieter fans but make sure you have adequate airflow to keep everything cool.

The fans have been spinning without any issues in both of my Norco systems for well over a year, so I guess it works out pretty well. wink.gif

I replaced fan blade this weekend with 120mm fans and swapped out the back 80mm for quiter ones.

I'll post some picks soon
