Official XBMC on Apple TV (version 2) Thread

Don't want to clog up the ATV owners thread with all the chatter on XBMC or Plex on AppleTv so lets start a thread on that here....

The Anouncement is here from the XBMC Team:
http://xbmc.org/theuni/2011/01/20/yo...-ipad-iphone4/

ATV2 must be jail broken to allow 3rd part App Installs:

Instructions for untethered jailbreak on MAC/OSX for original firmware:
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=12380

Instructions for tethered jailbreak on MAC/OSX for 4.1 and 4.1.1 firmware
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=13581

Instructions for jailbreak Windows 4.0 firmware:
http://techngadgetz.com/jailbreak-ip...-by-step-guide

Instructions for tethered jailbreak Windows,4.1+ firmware:
http://www.shoutpedia.com/jailbreak-...le-tv-2g-7310/

Installing XBMC on ATV2 once jail broken:
http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title...l_XBMC_on_ATV2

You will need a micro usb cable to accomplish the hack.
An Example here:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2
or
http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-U...5624267&sr=8-2

Specific XBMC for iOS Forums at XBMC.org are here:
http://forum.xbmc.org/forumdisplay.php?f=137

I'm waiting on my cable to complete the hack. Anyone else got theirs up and running yet?

Known Limitations

Will decode 1080P but currently only outputs 720P@60Hz
Stereo Sound (no Comments about this from Devs yet)
No USB Drive Support (probably never according to devs)
DVD ISO or VOB playback is not yet enabled (jmarshall says they need to port libdvdnav)
web server disabled aka. remote control apps via TCP/IP wont work.

FAQ:

Will there ever be a version of the XBMC on the future ATV app store?
Highly unlikely according to jmarshall. http://forum.xbmc.org/showpost.php?p=698257&postcount=8

Thats the same cable my Android Phone and Kindle 3 use, so many people probably already have one handy.

So forgive my ignorance, but does this mean that XBMC can directly access network shares (like a NAS)?

Yes, it should. For me, For me the question is will it be able to bitstream hidef audio formats like TrueHD and DTS HD-MA?

I dug through my collection of cables and found 3 different form factor micro and minis but none were the right ones...

bummer...

mine will be delivered Sat around 10:00 AM via UPS. chomping at the bit...

At present it sounds like:

- only outputs 720p

- only stereo audio

- buffering issues with some 720p and 1080p content

I would jump on this setup as long as the devs could say that these issues CAN be solved at some point soon...especially the buffering as for my needs 1080p output and stereo audio are not problems (I would be putting this in a bedroom)...the question is whether the buffering issue is a hardware limitation (cpu can't keep up with transcoding, etc) or not...

I will venture to say NO at this point.

Why do I say that:

bit streaming XBMC is not in the main branch yet so I doubt its in the dev branch these guys were using to develop this port. I certainly could be wrong.

I suspect it will decode TrueHD and output DTS core as the current production versions of XBMC allow.

Once the bit streaming code in XBMC is stabilized and if the HW supports it then we might see it.

For the curious it's a USB micro B plug. Camera cables are often a USB mini B plug 5-pin. The annoying confusing thing is the USB mini B plug 8-pin which is smaller than the mini B 5-pin, but those are rare.

My mobile phone, my ATV-2g and my Blue Tooth earpiece all use the micro B plug. My camera and backup battery use mini B 5-pin.

There's a reasonably clear comparison photo on Wikipedia.

The plug is the "male" end and the socket is the "female" end.

I'm anxious to hear how smooth the menus are with fanart and thumbnails. The only videos I've seen are browsing in file mode, not library mode.

Also hearing reports that stereo audio output only.

Installed on my ATV2 last night and loving it so far. Previously, I was switching between the ATV2 and my Revo running XBMC. ATV2 was serving Netflix stuff and ATV2 was streaming everything else from my NAS and home computers.

Now, I can keep it on the ATV2 much of the time. Things will only get better from here.

A few quick observations:

XBMC on ATV2 will decode 1080, but output at 720@60p

The interface looks pretty good for a v1.0 release. There is a transparency bug where you can see the hidden menu beneath. And it's not super smooth with the fading transition effect. Not sure if it's related to the bug or not.

From the ATV2 lowtide GUI, starting XBMC only takes 5secs. So it's super fast and actually much faster than starting Netflix and waiting for it to log into the service.

I haven't ran into any buffering issues with 1080 or 720 content yet.

Exactly my nikon uses the mini-8 which is smaller than the micro and looks similar.

Strangely what is stopping me from doing this is the IR remote...I have a Boxee Box and would switch to this cheaper, more open option except it would need to go in my master bedroom closet...the Boxee remote is RF so it has worked perfectly...

To use the ATV2 I would end up spending money on an RF remote w/ IR blasters and by then I would be spending more than the Boxee costs...and I don't have an iPhone/iPod so I can't use the wifi apple remote...any such thing as an Android Apple TV remote app?

For anyone that has run XBMC on the ATV1 (Sean!) what are the differences that you are aware of at this point?
(I dont believe the ATV1 had Netflix but I could be mistaken.)

I will comment on it once I have it working...

basically XBMC on the ATV1 is just like XBMC on the xbox. Anything up to DVD is great. Certain HD upto 720P ripped a certain way will play back, etc....

one really nice thing on ATV1 and this should work on ATV2 is that you dont have to exit from XBMC to use airtunes with appleTV (ie. broadcast music from itunes to the ATV) which is handy.... ATV1 does DD and DTS passthrough just like the Xbox. Basically ATV1 XBMC is just like xbox except the box is smaller, quieter, and has an HDMI port on it and has a slightly less capable remote. I beleive the remote limitations were eventually resolved but I haven't bothered to try any of those solutions.

Per this guide, it says it only works with v4.1. If i go to apple and pick up a ATV2 and it comes with the lastest (4.2?) what guide can we use?

I was just reading that and unfortunately there is only a tethered jailbreak at this point for the ATV2 using 4.1.1 firmware (which is really IOS 4.2.1, confusing arg).

Here's the link to the tethered jail break...

http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=13581

good news here is that the untether jail break for 4.2.1 has been done. The author is waiting for the Verizon release before releasing it. So within the next month. This tethered jailbreak should no longer be required....

Its a pain in A&^ for the time being.

people using this... would you recommend this or boxee box? I don't have anything yet and trying to decide what to buy. Appletv is cheaper and I already have a jailbroken iphone 4. Advantages of going with the boxee or this?

thanks Sean - is there a Windows version when using 4.2.1

Its looks like seasonpass is Mac only at the moment...

seems that windows season pass is still in development...

Anyone know if there is a 4.2.1 jailbreak for windows...

http://support.firecore.com/entries/387605

Again, this should not be an issue shortly after Feb 10 when the Verizon iphone ships and they release the untethered jailbreak for the latest IOS's.

Question for phillip: once you hacked yours (untethered) I assume does it disable firmware updates so that the hack is not automatically erased. Unlike ATV1 I don't see a setting in the ATV2 to control auto firmware updates from apple.
