Open xbmc
on the main xbmc menu highlight 'system'
click the up button
choose 'system info'

The newest version should say pre 10.0 Git:4b....compiled 2-19

(I use confluence skin with horizontal menu. If using vertical menu you would click 'right' button instead of 'up')

Those are the instructions straight from the xbmc.org home page.
Has worked fine for me so far.

You've done this on a stock ATV-2g XBMC install?

Yes
using stock confluence skin.

I use horizontal menu option, so 'up' button works for me.
If you use the regular vertical menu then click 'right' instead of 'up'.

This thread has sure gotten quiet.

Anybody else using the ATV2 with XBMC?

Is there an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide anywhere for jailbreaking to installing XBMC to what works/doesn't? Thanks.

Yes. Google will point the way. Be sure to visit the FireCore and XBMC sites.

You can also check RedmondPie, LifeHacker, iClarified and AwkwardTV.

Of course you can also follow the steps posted here but the other communities are a bit more focused.

Finally I strongly suggest a laptop (or other direct) install for anyone interested in XBMC on the ATV. Then you can readily separate the XBMC issues from the ATV issues.
Thanks, iclarified's instructions seem clear and straightforward.

I have it working but I'm waiting for ISO support in order to replace my hacked Xbox.

Seasonpass .7 is as easy as it gets for an untethered JB. As for XBMC, you can head over to

http://forum.xbmc.org/forumdisplay.php?f=137 .

An alternative which has all the info in one place is atvflash ( black). It's $20 and you can install most everything it does for free, but it's a neat gui to apt-get, and it allows you to block Apple updates. You can install XBMC, Plex and a couple of other things from a menu. You can also remove them. Probably worth it.

For what it's worth, an Addon to XBMC in either the ATV2G (or ATV1G) gives you access to the Plex Media Server. The addon has recently been updated and is very neat. It's called plexbmc and the version you want is 1.5.4.

philip

Edit: The Plex Media Server will run under Windows or a Mac and "soon" under Linux though I don't know if that means NAS. It is probably the best metadata collector for media for xbmc type software. You can either use a Plex client to access anything on it or now xbmc ( though that is unofficial).

Same here, installed on new ATV2 and working great.. just need ISO support and I can replace all my G1 XBOXes. Would like a bit more interface speed and file load speed, but heck: I can't beat that slim size which has a high WAF. I'm sure they'll get things going faster soon enough.

You can use the xtv-saf-v1.0.2 skin which is similar to FrontRow. It's very fast on the ATV2. The default skin is a bit sluggish. There are other skins which are not so gui demanding.

Hmmmm. I'm confused by this ISO statement. I have been reading that even BD ISO files are supported in recent xbmc builds (bd lite, not full menu). Is this not the case for ATV2? are all xbmc instances not created equal?

Thanks!

There are still some features that arent fully fleshed out in XBMC for the atv2.
ISO support and video ts have issues at this time, as do various other features.

Looks like you need a Mac for this. Would the best Windows jailbreak route be greenpois0n rc6? I don't have an ATV2 yet, but considering getting one as a secondary, cheap media player.
I've had this running for a couple of weeks. I managed to pick up an ATV2 new for $80 through an eBay deal. I used Greenpois0n rc6 which took a couple of tries but eventually came through. One skin you guys might try is "Slik", which is lightweight and seems to perform nicely on the ATV2.

I would go out and buy a couple more of these boxes if they're able to straighten out some of the limitations. For me the biggest one is the issue with 1080p content (rendering at 720p). If they can solve this then I'd probably buy more of these for other rooms in my house. Currently I'm tinkering with it in the basement.

By the way, it's really quite an amazing device. I've read that it only consumes like 2.5 watts when streaming video. Seems like you could do cool things with it if someone figured out how to run Debian (with video drivers). Seems like a better alternative to plugboxes for about the same price.

The version of greenpoison would be rc61 which deals with the wireless problems some have had. There is also pwnagetool which is fine (not sure about windows for that).

I thought seasonpass had a windows beta version.

Greenpoison 6.1 for windows works great.

Question: I have an ATV2 still sitting in a box, waiting to be jailbroken. I have two, one of which I've jailbroken. I was waiting for XBMC to support DVD rips first. But with iOS 4.3 imminent, should I go ahead and JB it? I guess I'm worried about an auto-update when I first plug in the ATV2. I suppose I would jailbreak it before hooking it to the network... anyway, just asking.

Frankly, I wanted to leave it shrink-wrapped in case I decide to sell it. (More on that in my next post.)

The one ATV2 I have JB'd now is not acting sane. I have three main issues:

1) Often the screen is black and won't come back without a reboot. I've left it idle for hours or days, switched my receiver to another HDMI input, switch it back to the ATV2, and there's no video. I hear audio when I use the remote, but see nothing at all, not even glitches.

2) Reboots take FOREVER to come up. I see the Apple logo for like 5-10 minutes before it sorts itself out. (Maybe technically this is a "reset"... I hold down the menu/down buttons to escape from #1 above.)

3) When I launch XBMC the first time after a reboot, I can't access my SMB unRAID server. And I think the weather app info is stale. However, there's the usual RSS crawl at the bottom of the main screen. I quit XBMC, restart it, and then it acts normal.

Anyone heard of these issues? I'm afraid to JB my second device until I understand what's going on here. (I used GP RC61.)

I've seen some of these. I don't think you should be surprised that alpha quality software has problems. Give it a year or two.

I have this issue and have read about it over at the XBMC forum. This happens to me after the device is put to sleep - but not all the time. Essentially the device is operational - you can hear the menu advancing with the remote but the screen is black. To correct it, I press menu/play pause to reboot (for about 6 seconds). I have read you can SSH in and issue the killall AppleTV command, which also works for some. I am wondering if this issue occurs on non-jailbroken devices and hopeful that 4.3 will correct the problem. I am not having the other two problems you noted. I am using WHS with SMB. Reboots take the normal amount of time.

A side note: I purchased a Boxee Box, got frustrated with it, and then returned it and went back to XBMC and a HTPC. When the unteathered jailbreak came out, I bought the Apple TV2. I think it is great (even with some of it's minor issues). I converted all my ISO's to MKV's (this was a job). If you haven't checked it out already, some guy on XBMC forum developed an icefilms plugin that is worth a look. You can pretty much stream any content you want on your jailbroken Apple TV2.

Anyone have issues with their Netflix sound. Voices on my center channel are very low on certain content. For example: That 70's Show / voices low and laugh track loud - almost unwatchable for me due to the issues. Fewer problems with movies but have to turn up my receiver volume to hear the voice track better then turn it down for some background sounds. Also, it does not seem to be impacting the other channels / just my center. So turning up my center channel would elevate the volume but I would still have the issue with the laugh track being elevated too loud. This is pretty wierd. This is not happening on streamed content through XBMC where my voice track is just fine so I really do not want to mess with my receiver channel volume settings anyway. This problem is not terrible just a nuisance where I need to watch with the remote in hand turning up and down the volume. I am not sure if this issue existed prior to the jailbreak as this is first thing I did when I bought the device.

Edit: I am running all my sound / video through HDMI

Is this an active thread? Any solutions? If you have a link for this thread, please post it. This, coupled with the long reboot time, is VERY frustrating.

And I really need raw DVD rip support, too. My entire collection was ripped as VIDEO_TS folders (main movie only). Is there a thread on the progress of that, does anyone know?

I know... I should just go search myself...

Okay, so I took a minute to do a LITTLE searching...

Here's the sticky thread for "known issues" of XBMC on iOS:
http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=91581

Is this the video_ts thread?

Check this one for video_ts issues. You just have to wait for the fix.

It seems to me that you won't get any guaranties when living in the jailbreak world. If you want an XBMC type media player then perhaps you should look at the Boxee Box.

My own ATV's are jail broken and both Plex and XBMC work just fine. However, if they didn't it wouldn't bother me as I bought the ATV for what it did and not for what it wasn't.

Obviously no one is going to tell you what will happen with iOS 4.3. It's not even out. An untethered jailbreak for 4.2.1 is fairly new. Who knows what will happen with 4.3.

I suspect an ATV app store will make much of this a non-issue.

The best place to get XBMC info is on the XBMC forums. The same with Plex.

I can't tell you what to do, but I can suggest that you look into other media players.

Remember, the video_ts bug only is a problem in library mode.
Video_ts works fine if you use video mode for now.

That said, I'm sure it wont be long before it is fixed in library mode also.

FYI menu does not work even in file mode. It will try to play vob files(queued) directly.
