Surround Sound Help

Hi all,

I recently received a new Phillips 55PFL5705DV/F7 LCD TV and am trying to configure my older Sony HT-4850DP surround sound system. TV has 4 HDMI inputs, 2 component inputs, USB, PC/VGA, Ethernet, and Digital Audio Coax Out.

I have my cable service supplied Motorola cable box connected to the TV using an HDMI cable. I have a digital coax cable running out from the TV to the digital coax IN port on the Sony receiver.

Is this correct, or should I run the digital coax out from the Moto cable box into the Sony receiver instead?

Also...

On my old Toshiba DLP TV, there were VAR L/R audio outputs which allowed me to control volume through the TV. The Phillips has something called EasyLink. From what I understand, EasyLink is used to synch up multiple EasyLink-compatible devices. The EasyLink option is configurable under the sound menu item in the TV, but I am not certain this is in any way similar to VAR audio out. Anyone familiar with EasyLink as it relates to controlling sound?

Many thanks.

Does what you have now work and does it provide 5.1 to the HTiB? It rarely does and that is why it is usually best to run the digital coax directly to the HTiB.

It does work at times... I assume when the channel I am watching is broadcasting in surround sound.

So, that being the case, am I OK to run coax out from the TV to the receiver, or am I still better off running coax out from the Cable box to the receiver?

I'd run the coax digital out from the cable box into the HTIB receiver. So you know, Philips EasyLink appears to be their name for HDMI-CEC, which is a protocol for controlling connected equipment via HDMI.
