WMC Remote Control and Programming

Hey all.

I bought this remote on BlackFriday when it was $13 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-003-_-Product...mainly for the IR receiver. Now that my HTPC is up and running, I've found out the remote does just about everything I want. There are only 2 things I would like it to do, but don't know if it's possible:

1. Change TV aspect ratio. The remote has an aspect ratio button at the top, but I can't get the button to do anything. Is there a way to link this button to the TV or the aspect ratio settings within WMC?

2. Turn the TV on/off

I don't believe I can program buttons on this remote like other universal remotes, but would something like EventGhost help? I'm not 100% sure what EventGhost does.

Thanks all

Your best bet is to email Rosewill about it. If they do answer you, post the reply here to help out others.

As for eventghost, I do not use it but from what I understand it can take an input and make it do whatever you want.

EventGhost will only be able to control your TV if your USB IR device has a transmitter. From the looks of it from the link I think it is only an IR receiver. You would see a 3.5mm input on the receiver that you would then use to connect an IR emitter. The IR emitter would then blast an IR signal for another device to receive (your TV).

EventGhost could receive the Power signal from your remote and transmit the Power signal through the emitter to your TV. The HP Media Center IR Receiver has a transmitter and is cheap on eBay.

Even if you had it working you would need your PC running for your remote to be able to turn on your TV. You best bet is to just get a universal remote and not worry about doing it all through your PC with EventGhost.

I think the main problem is WMC remotes just dont have the right buttons. I dont get why they dont just have a few more. Mine is a anyware remote and theres 4 colored buttons at the bottom that I dont get what they are for nor do I see a way to program them.

I would like a power button for the htpc as well since walking up to it to turn it on is dumb and its not always sleeping. Or a way to restart it when the sound doesnt work.

Exactly. This little $13 remote has 98% of the buttons I need for a true WAF proof system. It literally controls (out-of-the-box) everything within WMC (netflix, TMT 5, Hulu, music, etc.). All I need are 1-2 programmable buttons and it would be perfect.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I need to shop around for a cheap, programmable MC remote.

Looks like and I need to shop around for a cheap, programmable MC remote.

Yeah but thats what I mean... I dont think there is such a thing. Well there are the logitech harmony ones but jesus the price aint worth it.

That remote does not have any programmablility. There are other models which can power the TV on-off and change the aspect ratio. Here is an example. It exists and says it's programmable for the TV etc but don't ask me how it works because I've never tried it.

The computer needs a hard connection between the motherboard power button pins to turn-on from a cold shutdown. There is no way around that. There was as funny little receiver that could do this but I'd have to search for it and the Soundgraph Imon systems will do this. So, in summary no USB device will wake from the computer from a powered-off state, but rather only from sleep.

EventGhost should still be able to capture button signals and use them for other things. I was playing with it at one time and I had the basic WMC remote functions still working and could capture and use the unused WMC remote buttons via EventGhost.

Actually the Harmony or MX remotes are worth every dime. They are the ultimate in WAF. My wife though I was nuts spending over $200 for a remote 10 years ago. About a week later and getting rid of 6 different other remotes no longer needed she said it was the best purchase we ever made.

When I built my HTPC I just got a cheap WMC remote for the IR receiver and then learned all the commands to my MX-700 and since I mapped them to all the same button we've always used for DirecTV the wife was not confused and it was super easy to pick it up.

Anyway, just saying it's worth every penny for ease of use.

Hopefully this won't jack your thread OP (at least not too much ), but does anyone know how to get a remote like the rosewill to fastforward through an avi or other movie using WMC? Thanks.
