Spartacus: Gods of the Arena on Starz - Page 2

Think the gore is the same, but it's a bit more realistic...the budget for the show must have gone up!

I totally agree. A little less jello spatter and lot more real blood look....

Great eppy, guess the Port a Potty wasn't invented yet.. http://www.porta-potty.com/ ..Batt must have woken up with some headache. Wonder if its enough to change his mind?

Just thought I'd point out if you don't have Starz, the eps are going up on Netflix Watch Instantly the day after they air again (just like they did with Blood and Sand).

Best show on television(IMHO).

If you're into porn and violence, sure.

That period was full of sex and violence, the program only depicts what history has taught us.....

To each his own, I guess. For me the (so called) porn and violence are just a few elements to this show. Others:
  • Doctore's (sp?) wife having to sleep with her husbands friend
  • Revenge for Batti
  • Suicide by battle
  • The depiction of one class having indiscriminate control over the life of another class
  • The rise of a Lanista(?) by way of devious schemes.

I wasn't there but I get the impression that sex, among other basic human traits such as open air public bathrooms and the use of drugs and alcohol , was not seen as taboo. This show chooses to not only display these acts, but to weave them into the storyline. A refreshing change of pace to other shows on these days. I agree there was a lot of sex and violence but really, isn't that what this show has been about since ep. 1?

Not exactly, the story and acting is superb, also.
It is the best show on tv. In my oppinion, the original series was one of the best I ever watched. Gods of the Arena is shaping up to be just as good.
Can't wait for the next episode.

I'm with all you guys. If there wasn't a good story being told with good acting, it would suck. Skinnamax airs a lot of garbage; stuff that's not interesting. Violence wise, I would imagine 'Jersey Shore' (which I've never seen..maybe someone else can find a better analogy) is full of violence but isn't it basically exploitive garbage? This show, like B&S is so much more.

I too think this is a great season. I wish they would continue the pre-Spartacus story for more than 6 episodes.

I am balancing the characters we are seeing now to those that don't make it to last year's kickoff. I'm thinking we are in for another blood bath. Also, the house of batty was broke at last years kickoff--I suspect the scheming or a large gamble is going to come up a bit short. Looking forward to how the story unfolds.

Look, I'm not saying it's a bad show - we watch it and like it. But to say it's one of the best shows on right now is a big stretch, because a lot of it does revolve around smut and violence. Well, I guess if you like overuse of the word 'c**k' it might be...

LOL... the way they talk is funny, it's comical. It's another great thing about the show.
Batti. has some of the best lines ever.
It would be awesome if people still talked like that.

I think he's one of the best bad guys since Al Swearengen on Deadwood.

I do agree, at this moment, it is the best show on television. That episode was awesome. Can't wait until I find a sound board somewhere with Batti's one liners. Jupiters C(*(!!!

And in your opinion, a better show on tv right now is....???

Agreed somewhat. Al at times did the right thing for "civilians". Batty has little to no respect for no one. But from a scene stealing aspect, he certainly livens things up. And believe me, I've known guys (even some gals) who use just as much colorful language as what we've seen on this show.

Mad Men, Justified, Breaking Bad, Fringe, Sons of Anarchy, the list is long.

Again, not saying it's a bad show, we do like it a lot. And the second ep was much better than the first on the over-the-top sex and violence act, IMO.

I read that this is just a 6 episode prequel so, when does season 2 actually start? Just wondering, I'm still watching season 1 via Netflix and looking forward to the next season already.

No date announced. They just cast the new Spartacus 3 weeks ago. Figure nothing before next January at the earliest.

Hadn't seen that. Sounds like Andy hasn't made it all the way back yet. Hopefully he can go into a full remission and resume his career.

Andy will not be returning to Spartacus even if he goes into full remission at this point. His role has already been doled out to another actor.

Love the prequel. Really enjoying the backstory.

I like that we got to see part of the reason Batti became such an a-hole. Before he got beaten and pissed on, they seemed to kind of portray him as a decent (at least compared to Blood and sand) guy that just wanted to make a name for himself.

Looks like getting beaten may have been what drove him over the edge.

The prequel has been great so far. Wish it was for a full season.

It sure has thanks, in large part, to the superb acting of John Hannah. This is the scenery chewing role of a lifetime and Hannah is taking every bite that he can. The devious cunning and good old fashioned maliciousness that are hard coded into Batiatus' DNA are in very good hands with this excellent actor.

The truth is that in a lot of ways he was the star of B&S. He was as he is now the dialog 'straw that stirred that drink' as well as the one who helped shape Spartacus' motives for vengeance.
