TM700 fan noise removal

I know that there has been a lot of talk about the fan noise on the TM700, so I though I would throw in my 2 cents about the noise, as an owner of the camcorder myself. Instead of cutting mike gain or covering the fan opening, I found that a simple filter in post could remove much of the unwanted fan noise.

Frequencies of the fan:

458 Hz (Lower end hum)

916 Hz (High pitched hum) (Much more dominant)

I found that removing the upper pitched hum made most of the fan noise go away without changing the rest of the audio very much.

Just throw in a narrow filter at 916 Hz and you're good to go.

Not technically noise removal, more or less frequency reduction / EQ. Which is fine, until you have some form of music that uses that frequency range.

Notch2 plugin in audacity to do this type of stuff. If you're into that whole nyquist thing.

I do agree that reducing those frequencies is not a perfect solution. However, the noise seems to be really narrow in frequency, so if you get a fine enough notch filter, you should get rid of the noise without taking away took much from the rest of the sound.

With Adobe Audition (audio editor), a sound profile of the fan noise can be saved and applied onto the audio track to remove the noise.

You would have to experiment with different levels of reduction; applying too much of the effect can make the audio sound robotic.

There also must be other programs or plug-ins that can do similar.

Well after weeks of research in reading reviews and watching videos. I bought the Panasonic TM700. I too was worried about this fan "hum" / noise that some were complaining about. So.. I did some tests. When I use the TM700 in my normal every day video recordings.. which are family events, birthdays, holidays, Christmas day, kids hockey games, kids school plays.. there is absolutely no fan noise or fan "hum" present.. if it is there, it is inaudible. I did another test where I recorded some video in a room with no noise what so ever. I played the footage back and used the TV speakers as a testing ground for the sound... even when cranking up the volume to 100%, all I could hear was the hiss of the speakers (because I had it cranked). No fan noise, no hum. I then played the footage back and ran the sound through my Surround Sound system.. as the camera has 5.1 surround. In a normal volume level.. there is no fan noise. Only when I cranked up my surround sound volume to almost full, this is where in the REAR LEFT speaker I could hear a slight HUM which was mixed in with the HISS of the speakers from being cranked up. There is no way you would hear this hum while watching normal video recordings. I can also say that I recently had to attend a family funeral where I was asked to take some video for other family members who could not attend. In this environment, you can't get any quieter... I reviewed the footage, and even with the slight silent chatter amongst the guests.. you heard nothing... no fan noise, no hum. So In my case and with my unit and my application. I have not run into this issue. From what I can see the TM900 has the fan... so it could not have been that big a deal for Panasonic. Get the TM700 if you can... The TM900 will be much more expensive.

I agree, I have not had any fan noise issue with my TM700.
