"the walls needed a little gap so that they could vibrate up and down"

How big a gap did you leave? It seems like the tradeoff is now you have a gap for sound to escape through into the upstairs.

OK,

Time for an update from the office while Mr. Big is being a super-trooper and helping with the build. Feeling really really guilty that I'm not there helping - but hey, I have to work to pay for this hobby right?

Looks like the drywalling will be done today - the first layer on the walls is complete and the second layer is almost done (had to wait on the contractor to bring a bunch of additional sheets by, because as usual - i under estimated)

while waiting for delivery the mudding began







Photos are courtesy of the wife who is actually getting really excited now- mainly from the sound isolation standpoint (she keeps texting me that she doesn't hear anything), and the reality that we will have a home theater soon to watch movies in

Once again - Massive Thanks to Mr. Big for helping this all happen so quickly

If you are putting that front wall behind sound insulation and screen do you still have to mud and tape it?

This is very encouraging. The wife keeps telling me I'm wasting money on all this soundproofing stuff. I tell her we might never know, but I don't want to sit down there for the first time and hear outside noise. Or, more likely, get yelled at to turn it down. If that still happens now, I'll know I did what I could. Otherwise I'd be kicking myself for not doing it. And after reading all the people here who are doing it and having good results, I'm confident it's not a waste.

Which reminds me, I need to call John and Ted to get some RSIC clips for the rest of my framing...

Close of day two, problem with getting more drywall in time to finish so just two walls left to go.







buttoning up all penetrations.







We are leaving two interior inside walls undone on the backside until ALL the electrical hook up is complete. That way we can back treat the light controls and house automation panel. Also pass the wires to the riser down low etc. All will sealed up tight. All outlet boxes will be inside the room. Mostly in columns. This wall ended up as a double stud wall because of the odd location of support columns and main drain stack. This way everything is tucked nicely in the wall.

In case somebody wonders about what a wall does on clips and channel, It moves, probably not this much but I'm sure it must move with intense bass. Click the image for video.

Are you hiring out the finish work? I hired out for framing, drywall, electrical - they finished that last May, and I'm still working on the rest - then again I didn't have a round-the-clock oversized elf keeping me on schedule :-)

Not really planning on hiring out the finish work might call in experts for help - and of course I'm hoping Mr. Big isn't going to fire me -

but, i'd like to learn how to do the finish work - i figure thats the fun part

That's good to hear. I thought I had made a mistake already. I've only drywalled the Infininte baffle chamber so far but everything was tight fitting. In fact I was quite proud of how square my walls were and how tight my drywall was.

Actually they were cutting some so long I could see the ceiling raise up when they forced that section into place. I was pretty happy if there just wasn't any pre-loading going on.

hello - o - o - o - o

thats how the room sounds now, but man is it quiet in there

looks absolutely great - contractor is "promising" that everything will be drywalled and mudded and ready to go tomorrow

Which means on deck next
1. Stage
2. Riser
3. Screen wall acoustic treatments

honestly - right now i want to
a) paint a nice big rectangle on the wall
b) throw some old rugs on the floor
c) slide an old couch into the room
d) hook everything up to an extension cord and give it a go

Of course Mr. Big is going to argue that we need to do silly things like get the HVAC and power going in the room, and he might make be build a soffit or two as well

oh - and of course running the a/v cables and such - really can't wait to test out the sound - but after testing the echo chamber today - I'm kind of wary about giving it a listen before there is some sort of absorption in the room

It was a special moment when I took this picture, this is the last of piece of the second layer of drywall for Jesto's theater. That is also the last of 4 buckets of GG that went into the room and Roberto had to literally scrape the bottom of the bucket to get enough.



Next challenge, where did we put that flexduct in the ceiling? lucky I found my notes. Using a 6 inch metal collar to attach to flex ducts on either side of the double drywall. Inside the theater the duct will be inside our version of a dead vent in the soffit.

Taping and mudding is underway this PM.



By this weekend there should be a nice room ready for the fun part of theater building.
