Also, I managed to mismeasure at least 1/2 of the spaces for the slots, to the point where we kept trying to cut into studs below.
Finally, only after we cut the slots out for the register on about 2/3 riser did we realize we should probably take column placement into account - some of our bass trap registers will be 1/2 under columns (including at least 3 of the beautiful slots we actually got done with the router), oh well
Here's a pic of the first cut, it actually looks great, but it took a significant amount of time and frustration, and just wasn't worth the effort to get 8 of these things done.
Our second attempt was with a handheld circular saw - thinking if we could get a wide enough blade we could just do grooves quickly. So... off to home depot. Unfortunately, no wide blades, and the process also would have been dangerous, so.... we went traditional, cut out squares and put in register covers.
