Group Buy for 6.5" Anarchy Tapped Horn. - Page 8

OK, now that these kits are soon to ship, what will be the best way to assemble these with Premium PL in the dados ?

1) will it be with pipe clamps ? How many ?

2) will it be with a nail gun ? (what size and length of brads ?)

3) will it be with screws ? (what size and length screws ? )

Thanks

I use 1-1/4" brads with 1/2" material on builds like this. Though you may not "need" them, clamps help a lot. I typically use 2X4's on edge as cauls to spread the load, then a clamp on each end of each 2X4. It takes a lot of hands to set up but it works well. The clamps will help keep things square, and it will make sure the joints are pulled tight.

I use 3/4" pipe clamps or Bessey K-bodys, whichever one is within reach.

I am excited to build these!

Guys, if you want to start sending me your addresses, I'll start wrapping them. I won't know the exact weight until I get one completely boxed up.

To help with shipping, I opened a Fed Ex account, so that will save us all some money. Seems to be about 20% cheaper.

Should we PM you with our addresses?

That's fine, or you can go to the website and use the contact info to send me an email.

Erich, since I jumped in on 4 of the JBL surrounds in that group buy, I'm going to have to hold off on this for a bit. Still want in, but it's going to have to wait for a while. The wife announced that we are taking the daughter to Disney World, so most of my money will be going to the Mouse for a while. Sorry, but hope you understand. I'll keep you posted if I run across any mad money.

Will one or two of these tapped horns be a big step up from a hsu stf-2 in output and sound quality in a small 10x11 room? I might very well buy one or two of these if its a significant improvement.

If anything, I undersell these, because I don't want anyone's expectations to be too high.

One of these will be 86 dB at a watt, two, with equal power will be 92. That should be about the equivalent to the Hsu sub you refer to. The low corner is about the same. The Hsu is a ported 10" driver, where this is a tapped horn.

At best, in my opinion, a pair would roughly equal the Hsu STF-2 when it comes to the spec sheet. Sound quality is too subjective for me to offer anything meaningful. I know which I prefer, that is why I design and build horns.

I'm not gonna blow rose colored smoke at anyone. This is a small tapped horn with a small driver. It takes displacement to make bass.

If you want bigger, I'm working on something along those lines too...

lilmike, anything more to tell about the MFW build??

Waiting for the driver and a bit of quality time in the shop. Both are on the way...

Quick poll on the MFW....

1/2" material and full bracing or 3/4" material and little to no bracing?

Let me know what you think. With CNC'd parts, assembly should be pretty easy, but I'm not sure if the full knock-down kit will be cost effective, cause shipping costs might get brutal.

One thing I'll be looking forward to is the speed that these little 6" drivers will have. I suspect that there aren't many 10" subs that can match the quickness of these small tapped horns. 25 hz extension is a bonus.

I'm going with 2 of these and with a 12" conventional sealed sub to support down low and for added displacement. I'll distribute these around the room to flatten the nodes and consider adding a third 6" tapped horn sometime in the future.

Agreed on the shipping stuff. Once I get most of these neat Anarchy kits moved out, I'll look into the bigger stuff. But shipping may not be pretty. Plus the enclosure is going to be 4 times the size. Certainly not as home friendly as these smaller horns that can be tucked away in the room.

I've got an Anarchy kit taped up sitting in my living room. Ricci came over last weekend to pick up his JBL group buy stuff and he really liked the size of the Anarchy kit.

It's just about perfect. And they'll work REALLY well as speaker stands. I'd love to find a DIY speaker that can hang with the Anarchy that's the same width. That would be really nice and definitely worth a group buy.

I'd vote 3/4" as I could see flexing in the walls of the braced 1/2" THT I did with the Rythmik 15" driver. Weight becomes another shipping factor though.

Yeah - I've watched well-braced 1/2" ply cabinets wiggle too, with a 10" driver. I've got a report of 15s in cabinets made of 1/2" ply moving themselves across a smooth floor....

Shipping 3 sheets of plywood is just not a cost effective idea. Perhaps we could reduce it to side panels only. Even then, we're still shipping a 5X5 of Baltic ripped in half. That might be worth it to some folks.

I'm inclined to go with 3/4" and eliminate the bracing as a test. A driver the size of that 15 hanging off a 1/2" thick baffle sorta bugs me too. I know someone is gonna try to stick an LMS or something in one of these....

Regardless of the shipping costs, the plans will be free.....

Anyone with a circular saw, router and cordless drill can make one. This will not be a hard build. It has less pieces inside it than the Anarchy tapped horn does. Unless you're an expert woodworker, the result probably won't be as pretty as the CNC one, but if you take care when you put it together, the result should sound exactly the same.

What are you powering the MFW with?
BASH 500, cause it is what I have available. Any 300 W plate amp is plenty big for one of these.

Did I miss you taking payment? I've been bed ridden with Bronchistis the last week. Again, thanks a bunch Erich for organizing all of this! You da man!

Nope, no payment requests yet. Don't worry, if you're on the list, you have first dibs.......and your on the list.

Thanks lilmike for the explanation. Can't wait to see the larger designs you're working on.

Today I rushed down to get the 2nd of 4 pallets of the Anarchy TH kits before they closed for the weekend. And the shipping boxes are in the background.

I tired boxing one up tonight to see how it went.

I stacked it up as nice as I could then cut some thick corner protectors about 1" longer on each side. The corner protectors are pretty much the length of the inside of the box, so it should protect the edges pretty good.

I added the left overs of the cut corner protectors to the short sides, then wrapped it with shrink wrap.

Then slid it inside the box and taped it up.

What do you guys think about this? Should I add a thin piece of cardboard on the top or bottom before sliding it in the box? This is Baltic birch, so it's pretty solid wood. The main goal was to protect the corners.

By the way, the complete package weighs 34 lbs.

I checked shipping from Cincinnati (45239) to Florida, Texas, or Massachusetts and it's under $22 to ship with the FedEx account I signed up for. It saves us about 20% on shipping.....gotta pass that savings on of course!

That's not bad!

This and the waveguide group buy was suppose to be done in late February and I had plenty of time then, so it was no problem. Things will be a little slower getting these boxed up because they were a few weeks late and I get busier at work right now.

But it will get done, just not in one weekend.

Erich,

You're the master of multitasking. I'd go crazy with so many projects going at once. All this while running a landscaping business is very impressive. Put many a CEO to shame, for sure! Good job!
Is it too late to get in on this? I would like one to learn on and I doubt building one could get any easier than this. Could be just perfect for the living room.
Lilmike, I'd like to place my vote for ply thickness.

Properly braced 1/2" ply will be considerably stiffer and flex resistant than unbraced 3/4" ply. Even the baffle should be braced as well so it should also not be able to flex. If anyone has seen a 1/2" ply horn flex then it is due to it not being properly braced. That should plain to see. If it were braced it couldn't flex. Also the 1/2" ply box will be considerably lighter as an added side benefit.

Thanks. I wouldn't say it's all going smooth though! I might look like it, but it's still a little hectic.

Rob Flanery, there will be some left over. The group buy was around 90, so I ordered 100. Some will back out of the group buy as well. If you want one, let me know.

Today I'm going to box up about 20 JBL surrounds from that group buy, then I'm done with that for a while. Once I get a good method down for boxing up these Anarchy kits, it will go pretty fast.
