Dark Souls... From Software's epic action-RPG - Page 38

I just finished Dark Souls (play through 1) and then threw in Skyrim for the first time. What a combat mess. I completely forgot all you do in the elder scroll series is run backwards and basically button mash. Back when I had Oblivion this seemed like fun, but after Dark Souls and it's tactical fighting it's all disappointment. Thanks for ruining other games for me FROM Software.

I'm glad not everybody in the gaming world has gone insane. Skyrim is truly crap compared to Dark Souls.

My 45 hours of Skyrim playtime looks at my 15 hours of Demon's Souls playtime and 4 hours of Dark Souls playtime and begs to differ.

Combat-wise, the Souls games are clearly superior. RPG-wise, story-wise, open-world-wise, and everything-else-wise, the Souls games aren't even competing. They're really fundamentally different games in terms of scope and ambition.

No worries, you have every right to be wrong. And it definitely looks like you are shooting for the stars. Good work!

Amen, brother. I really enjoyed both, but I found Dark Souls to be much better than Skyrim.

I started upgrading a sword last night I got to +5 and instead of continuing on to +10 so that I can then use a boss soul it went to RAW? what gives. I just want it at +10 so I can then use a boss soul to create a chaos weapon

nevermind i figured it out

...and connectivity. And quality.

I made the mistake of playing Skyrim immediately after playing Dark Souls, and Skyrim just isn't pulling me back in. The volume of game-breaking bugs I've encountered in about 12 hours of play hasn't helped matters, but even if it were technically flawless I'd still find it hard to get excited about a never-ending stream of fetch quests with laughably bad combat and physics.

When is the DLC comingout?

Guys, I am having a humanity problem..not enough of it. Do I need to be in human form while playing to earn it? I went through all of Sen's Fortress and didnt gain one point of humanity? I thought usually on a new level after killing some of the enemies you gained humanity?

I usually always have to reverse hollow at a bon fire and then kindle it so thats 2 gona right away...I'm down to 2 left???? what gives
post #1121 of 1246
The easiest place to get humanity is the little room under the dragon that breathes fire on the bridge whose name I forgot. Just kill the 3 rats in there over and over. If you have the Gold Serpent ring (I think that's the name of the ring), wear it.

Ideally, you'd go from the bonfire under that dragon's perch if you activated it. It's about a 5 second walk from there to get to the 3 rats.

I know there are places where the drop rates is higher, but this one is really easy.
You stop getting it from enemies after a while.

You can get it from COOP, by putting down your whit soapstone, getting invited to another world, and beating the boss. You can also find usable forms as pickups.

Or you can farm it.

Find the gold serpent ring in sens and head back to the sewers. You can plot of circle route there from the bonfire and wearing the ring kill most of the rats and frogs. You'll get quite a few humanity drops every time. Once you have 30, use them as 30 in the upper left and the ring gives u the maximum drop rate (410). now farming you'll get ~5-8 humanity and ~2-4 eyes of death per farm run.

You can also farm the aborted skeletons in TOG, but it's harder to get to and a tad more time consuming.

Thanks guys, as I havent yet been to anor londa ( i am getting ready to kill the fire bomb giant and fight the boss in Sens) I guess i'll just have to get by until I get the lord vessel as I dont want to have to go back thru Sens to get back out...
Make sure to "jump the gap" where he was throwing the fire bombs after you kill the fire bomb guy. There's a merchant in that tower and a key to open up the cage elevator to skip sens entirely.

Very helpful shortcut.

Actually that is not accurate, there is a progressive scale of the number of enemies you kill without dying. The more you kill the more chance of getting humanity. These are the ones that just appear in the upper left by default, not picked up. The more you kill in the game, the fewer humanity you get, its like kill X and you get 1 humanity, kill X+100 and you get one, kill X+200 you get one. That is not the scale but makes my point. It keeps going up and up so takes a lot longer to get it but it never really stops.

Thanks for the heads up on the rats...I farmed about 25 humanity in an hour last night! Sweet, now I'm ready to go defeat the iron golem and move onto Anor..

Anyone else have trouble with the stray demon? geese man this guy whacked me 10 times last night before i finally gave up..and i'm level 65!!! i lose half my health falling, sometimes i cant even get behind him before he whacks me and since its an unpopulated area there is no help from phantoms. I did just read that I can go ahead and get the doll without facing him, but I sure couldnt find the way last night....

Ok, so I used the shortcut through vall of drakes to go back to blightown and have the queen upgrade my pyro flame as I had it at 15....I talk to her go to upgrades, see that it cost 27,000 souls and i purchase...

Now instead of being +15 its back at 1 and has hardly any damage..what gives? In reading the wiki it says she upgrades it past +15 but now i'm showing only +1 with very little damage...can this be undone like you can with a weapon?

If +1 was 27,000 souls I can only imagine how long and how much it will cost to get back to +15....I'm losing my mind!!!!

EDIT: looking at the wiki again it says she will upgrade to +5 so I dont know mabye its correct? but my damage output is way down? this game can be very confusing. My fire orb was doing say 300 + damage and now when I throw it its under 100. But looking at the chart on wiki the souls she charged is on par with the upgrade cost

You "ascend" it when you upgrade/modify with her. and yes it isn't very clear. You will notice you went from having a small flame hand to a giant flame hand.

It should be doing a little more damage at +1, and at +5 it will be doing a lot more damage.

But, for some perspective you can get 27K X 5 in undead burb on NG+. Seems like a lot now, but running through later areas will net you 20-40K each time easily, as you strike down foes.

I'd invest in Piromancy. It gives you a real bang for your buck on bosses (distance weapon, and good armor if using iron flesh). Be careful using it on invaders, it's slow to cast and leaves you open to backstabs if you lock on. Better to throw it to your feet freelooking when they try to sidestep and get behind you.
I farmed souls yesterday until I got enough to ascend all the way to +5. I didn't notice the SIZE of my hand being any bigger. After some research I found that really nothing gives the flame more damage so I think I'm just gonna stick with piling points in dex as faith or int does nothing for it.

OK..upon leaving firelink shrine and heading towards undead burg you go up the stairs and come to a landing, off in the distance you can see the entrance and shorcut to undead parish (basically the sewer canal) under that you can se an item on a corspe (under the bridge) which I have no idea on how to get to, what is it? And now there is an NPC sitting beside the corspe..who is he...do you end up getting there somehow?

You can only get there by running and jump/roll at the last minute. Then slowly walk along the ledge between each landing, push towards the wall to hug it. The ring is a great ring to have and I believe it is the one that lets you immediatetly respawn where you are if you die, but can only be used once and breaks if taken off. The NPC by the corpse is probably one of the merchants in the game. Depending on what you have done, one of the merchants you free goes there and he is the best merchant in the game in that his inventory constantly changes after you beat bosses and the boss armor it had is available for purchase.
It's one of those rings that break if u die, but you lose nothing. The merchant is the guy from the depths, but he's got some good wears to sell after beating some of the later bosses.

You can jump across from the lower area where the guy with the shield and sword is standing. To jump, while running double tap circle. Just make sure to have your timing right....

You should be able to go back there and use the black-eye orb again.

Well I know there is a way back there because I died once against them and ran back to the same spot and got summoned again.

Yes I looked and still had the orb, so I was able to go back and defeat him. I guess now its on to the big boss battle...I have a feeling it will include several deaths

If you are going at it alone and want the easier path (and don't care about getting Ornstein's armor), I would kill the little guy first and save the fat man 2nd.

It's not worth the aggravation of trying to solo this. There's really no shortage of people you can summon for this. You might get invaded a couple times and die, but it's still better to summon help.

You can put down your own soul signs and help other people defeat them as a way of scouting what you have to do. This is a good way of earning the humanity you'll need to summon others for help here.
