Thanks, I appreciate that.
This is not exactly a toy, at least not for me as I hope to use it to acquire some really awesome 3D video of eagles, bears, falcons, etc.

Task for today is watch grandson replace steering servos which grand dad fried while driving RO3DCV into snowbanks.
After that, purchase additional RF controller to take apart and hack a computer interface so RO3DCV can be controlled via onboard laptop.
Lots of fun. Thanks again to Samsung.

IMHO,there are many cool ways to exploit the additional 3D modes of the Samsung 3D televisions.
The more applications I think of, the more bewildered I get that the "experts" in the consumer electronics industry didn't think to take advantage of it.

Spent some time this morning driving my RO3DCV around the house using my IPAD with my anaglyph glasses on. Talk about fun.
Even though the live 3D is not high definition, it's amazing.
Of course the recorded 3D from it is of extremely high quality.
I'm trying to figure out how I can get a live high definition 3D feed. Looks like if I get two HDMI capture devices and multiplex them with Stereoscopic Player that it will work.
Steering is extremely sluggish so I had to order some high torque steering servos, stiffer suspensions springs and harder front tires.
I feel like a kid again.

Let this be a warning to all of you who are jogging on your treadmill while operating your RO3DCV and viewing it POV on your Samsung 3DTV.

Any chance you can upload the 3D videos to youtube, I've got to imagine that they look awesome.

I watched the crash happen live in 3D from the vehicle's point of view and it was both fascinating and sickening at the same time
Unfortunately due to operator error, the right camera was not recording at the time.
I'm not planning on staging a similiar crash in the immediate future.
My grandson is coming over later and we're going to take it out onto the frozen lake and hope to shoot some really cool video which I will be posting on YouTube. I hope to spot some eagles and get them on video.

I'm not looking forward to explaining to my grandson why it's so simple to play YouTube videos in 3D at my house and such a PITA at his house. (he has my old Panasonic 3DTV)

I assume you are referring this this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCAVoiiJKj8&hd=1
That tree has an interesting history.
There was a large eagles nest near the top about a hundred feet up and a family of bears took it over.
As far as I know this is the only case of a bear being born in an eagles nest. The bears are very territorial about that tree.

By the way, I have shot many hours of 3D video of ground squirrels and love to watch them.

Yes that video.

WOW an Eagle Nest ..so kool..shame the bears took it over.

What I was getting at it looked like the big bear was from another family being that the 2 cubs ran away and scattered up that most wanted tree.

They seemed afraid of that bear.

Whats the scoop ?

That was almost a year ago that I shot that 3D bear video.
Basically it comes down to this:
The "big bear" (not that big for these parts) was saying to the smaller bears; "Hey, stay away from that tree! That's my tree!"
The bear cubs around here are scared of just about everything. One slight noise and they're up a tree in two seconds.

The 3D video from the camcorders was nausea inducing because the cameras were in Auto mode. (image stabilizers engaged)=BAD!

It's almost one year since my 3D addition started.
I'm enjoying it more then ever thanks to Samsung.
It's interesting to me that the 3D format that makes my hobby possible is not supported by the vast majority of 3D television manufacturers.
I'm taking my RO3DCV out to the shore of Lake Superior to shoot 3D video of the ice formations.
Should look awesome.

Here is a short 3D video I made to demonstrate my remote controlled 3D cameras mounted on a Traxxas Summit.
I demonstrate the effect of toeing in and out the right camcorder.

I wish everyone shopping for a new 3DTV would ask this question:
Exactly how do I play the thousands of 3D youtube videos on this set in 3D?

-Frank's friday morning rant-
Yesterday I received my brand new JVC 3D camcorder and was very excited to test it.
My initial impressions were quite favorable. It's light, small and fits in the palm of my hand perfectly.
The LCD display is 3D and although it appears quite pixelated, is easy on the eyes.
I shot some quick test video in both the full HD3D MP4 mode and in the AVCHD mode.
My excitement began to turn to frustration and then anger when I discovered that there was no way to extract the full resolution left and right images from the camera.
After crashing Vegas Pro trying to read the MVC MP4 file and then discovering Adobe Premiere couldn't deal with it either, I had to hug my dachshund and try to calm down.
Did I mention that I hate the current 3D standard that's been forced upon us?
Come to think of it, I believe I did that already.
At least Samsung has partially made my 3D experience fun.

end rant

I was just thinking that as many 3D videos that I make/edit/review, that if I had to manually switch into and out of side by side mode on every one, I would have done that about thirty three thousand times by now.
Thanks to Samsung checkerboard mode I don't have to do that.
Thanks again Samsung.

Thanks for your posts, Frank--they're fun to read and watch. Out of curiosity, do you know of TVs besides Samsung's that support checkerboard mode? For non-checkerboard TVs, are there any other solutions to view checkerboard content? For example, do any players, receivers, or converters output checkerboard mode, and if so, would they even display properly on a non-checkerboard TV? Or am I thinking about this backwards, and non-checkerboard TVs would need a device to convert content *from* checkerboard mode to whichever mode they can natively display?

Thanks for the feedback, I don't get very much.
AFAIK only Samsung and Mitsubishi support checkerboard mode.
Lee Stewart posted a link to a device that can convert between all formats but I lost that link. Will have to look for it.

Frank,

I read and enjoy all of your posts sooner or later. I'm particularly interested in your construction of hardware. If you would share more details, close up pics, and perhaps even instruction...

I'm using a 720p projector and am frustrated by the difficulty in viewing YouTube 3D of any kind. Also, monitoring 3D video during editing is less than ideal without checkerboard. I do wonder, though, whether the solution ought to be in the computer rather than in the TV set. Shouldn't be so hard to build a video driver that brings windowed 3D to the display. Then maybe it could also be full resolution.

But I appreciate your point: checkerboard is the only way to do these things now, and that makes it a very valuable feature in a TV display.

Yeah, viewing YouTube videos is soooo easy when you have a computer connected via checkerboard and sooo frustrating every other way. I feel your pain.
If I could figure out a way to make a "how to" fun then I will certainly consider it.
Like I keep hammering, "checkerboard should have been included in the 3D standard".
If a lot of you are interested in the hardware details then I will attempt to make a youtube explaining everything.

Please, please sell me a front projector that supports checkerboard mode

I'll pay any price!

As if I needed another reason to support checkerboard 3D over all others I just found another reason.
I was watching this Youtube video in my browser window in 3D.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2M36Z9B2J8
I think it is really great but the resolution is lacking even though it was imported as a 3840 by 1080 sbs file.
If I make the 3D video fullscreen which is the only way most of you can do it, it is difficult to watch.
There are a number of the thousands of 3D YouTube videos like this I believe.

I read a lot about complaints of crosstalk on the LCD 3DTVs such as my Samsung UN40C7000 and I do see it on some material.
Having said that, I use my remote controlled 3D mobile camera vehicle which I dubbed R2D3 to view live video in 3D on mine and record much of what I see.
Later, I download these 3D videos and view them on the Samsung and almost never see crosstalk and I'm viewing quite literally, hundreds of hours of this.
Perhaps after viewing so much 3D my brain has learned to cancel out the crosstalk?

I don't see as much crosstalk as others seem to suffer from on my UN46C7000. I think some of it is set-up, if you have the backlight at 20, dynamic contrast on and are looking off angle, then you will see plenty of crosstalk. The other issue is that the LCD's do seem to need a little warm-up before they give their best response times.
Frank,

If you don't want to do a full construction howto, can you at least make a parts list? I am especially curious about the battery that you are running all this off of and the exact way you got PTZ capabilities for those camcorders.

Also, how are you live viewing the 3d combined image of both cameras? What software are you using for that? Are you just using the Composite signal from each one into a video capture device on that netbook and then muxing them in some viewer?

If you could give a parts list, I'm sure I could figure the rest out.

Thanks.

An alternative explanation might be that our brains work the same way.
