Small Subwoofer for Family Room

I have searched, but wanted to get a few "current" suggestions.

I want to replace an older 10" subwoofer that is in my family room. I have a separate dedicated HT room with dual SVS subs, so I am not looking for HT-type performance in the family room. The family room is primarily just for watching cable TV or the random movie on HBO etc.

In the family room I have Niles HD-LRC inwalls across the front, and some 5" Niles HD inwalls for side and back surrounds. The room is about 22x14x8.5. I want the sub to simply take over the basic bass duties from the inwalls and provide a bit more fill. I don't want it shaking the room. I'd like to keep the footprint at or under 13" cubed. I'd like to keep the spend under $400.

If SVS had their SB10-NSD available now, I'd be all over it. Since they do not, I am curious about the Emotiva 10" Ultra.

Thoughts?

the other option would be the eD A3S - 250 at $350, its 14" cubed however..

I was goint to recommend the SVS SB12-NSD but that's a little over your budget and a 14" cube, plus I'm sure you're familiar with that anyway. What about this?

The Ultra 10 is great in my room. Sealed sub of any variety should help the whole system blend better - my experience with in-wall speakers (limited) tells me this would be a good thing. If you don't like the Ultra after setting it up and calibrating the system, while it's a pain in the rear, Emotiva has a good return policy.

Thanks for the replies. For this application, even 13" cubed is pushing it on the size, so SB12-NSD is out for that reason alone (I have two of them in my HT, so I am a fan).

If others have had good experiences with the Emotiva 10, that looks like a good fit. I will look into that little Velodyne, however. My wife would love to see less subwoofer in the corner

Thanks again.

I'll never understand why women don't like giant subs--I think they're beautiful!!

I'd skip on that little Velodyne Impact Mini and go for the Emotiva Ultra-10. I currently have an Ultra-10, and it's a very nice sub for the money and size.

The Impact Mini only has a 6.5" driver and 8" passive radiator... and only extends to 38Hz (-3dB)....not much of a sub.

If you absolutely must go with a smaller sub than the Ultra-10....my recomendation in your price range is the Klipsch XW-300D from Vann's...

I use one for nearfield PC audio, and it's great for that. I had it in the bedroom for about a week while waiting for another sub to get there, and in my 11x16 bedroom it sounded pretty impressive for such a small sub, even with movies.

It's not as good as the Velodyne Minivee I once had (I actually had the VMS-8, but it's the same thing)... but it's also ALOT cheaper than the Minivee.

Here are measurements of the XW-300D:

It actually measures pretty well, extending to 28Hz (-3dB)... although I have no doubt the low end output is very limited... but that's the sacrifice of a sub that small.
