Does anyone have experience with DVD drive cleaning or failure with the Xbox? Is it worth repairing or will a cleaning disk help?
I've replaced a few thousand (yes, thousand
) drives/lasers on 360 consoles. Rarely; as in, less than 1% of the time, will cleaning the laser solve the problem...even if you do it correctly with 98% isopropyl alcohol and are thorough. Cleaning discs are junk, btw. Save your money there.
You have a few options:
1. Replace just the laser. Costs about $4 - $7. You'd need a Torx 10 and a small flathead (or, ideally, an opening tool) for the shell, plus a phillips for the drive itself, and a small phillips for the laser. Not difficult at all, just take your time and make sure you get the right laser. eBay had a boatload last time I looked.
2. Replace the whole drive. Costs probably somewhere around $20 Same tools required, minus the small phillips. IMPORTANT! Since the mobo and the drive are "married," you'd have to either extract the key codes from the drive or swap the boards.
To do the former, you'd need special tools, so I'd advise against it. Zath's linked vid is actually pretty good for that. Just make sure you get the same model of drive with a guarateed good laser.
3. Pot-tweak the laser. Costs $0. Cheapest, but doesn't always work. You'd need all the same tools, plus a multimeter. Some info to get you started here: http://team-xecuter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61768
If you have a miltimeter, you should be golden. If not, they cost about $2. (You don't need some "fancy" version, just get what's cheapest.) That said, this is likely the most difficult solution and not recommended if you aren't comfortable with small electronics.
4. Have a shop do the work for you. I wouldn't pay over $40 to anyone for a new laser or drive replacement. Some places might try to charge you double that.
