Less critical source (satellite TV etc.); Meridan 568 with 4 x S/PDIF digi out
This digital sources go into a Z-Sys Z-8 digital router for input switching
The Z-Sys router feeds a 4 channel Trinnov all digital over AES/EBU (Mains, Center and LFE channel)
For mains, I use the digi out of the Trinnov, feeding my PWD MKII dac
For center (I sold my sub), I use the Trinnov DAC (which is excellent)
Since I am short two channels on the Trinnov, I run my surrounds through the Meridan - I will use just delay setting to time align with the front 3 channels - no EQ/room correction on surroud. To get this I would need an 8 channel Trinnov for $8K more than the 4 channel - not worth it (I am 80% 2 channel anyway).
Only issue is synching up volume control between Trinnov driven channels and surround going through meridian - both have RS232 and 1db volume increment steps, so simple iRule macro programming will do the trick.
I am still piecing this together (some of the components are in transit as we speak), but I will go live next week. I think this setup will beat the crap out of anything else commercially available right now for a fraction of the cost. I did a proof of concept with two channel (using high rez sources, like 2 copies of Neil Young Le Noise at 196/24, and some SACD material).
In initailly toyed with the idea of running 5 channels into 3 PWD Dacs and take the Trinnov out altogheter - after I changed speakers and added massive corner bass traps, the benefits of DRC were no longer there. However, Curt@Trinnov fiddled with my filter setting and Trinnov DRC rules again! I suspect he disengaged correction in the higer frequencies and just tackles the bass issues.Edited by edorr - 8/3/12 at 7:52am
