I've still got the upgrade of the Rosas to go plus this PR3 module to finally hear what my Xtreme DACs are capable of. To add a Gen VIII Ser 3 I would also need the new digital out card. I occasionally look around on Audiogon but I've not seen a Series 3.
At the moment I am more focused on upgrading my car. The new Audi RS6 Avant is a lovely piece of kit - plenty of room for all my fly fishing and hunting gear and not sluggish. :-)
Now, if you're a particularly picky kind of guy, you find something about your Casablanca, no matter which one it is, that's just not good enough and that thing will just need to be upgraded the first chance you get.
No offense intended, but you're kind of a particular picky kind of guy,
and your looking at the CB-III-HD like it should do anything that you can imagine and do it like a dedicated two channel preamp all at the same time. I realized this myself that this wasn't gonna happen when I first bought a CB-1 and sold my Levinson preamp!
Unfortunately, the CB-III-HD with Extreme DAC's is just a really, really good SSP and while being a fairly good, 2 channel preamp all at the same time, it's not gonna make a particularly picky 2 channel guy all that happy.
Theta came up with the solution for those kinds of particularly picky people too and it's called the Gen. VIII and the two extra pieces you have buy fix all of those things that you want do plus has the advantage of making your SSP sound better when actually used for multi-channel too!
Adding a Gen VIII is exactly what you need, given your complains., You can easily get away with an old output card because it sounds so much better then the CB-III to begin with, the Gen. VIII will still blow your mind at 48. or feed your music directly into the Gen. VIII. All sorts of things get done better and sound better with the Gen. VIII and again, it's a part of the system, designed to be in your system and work with your system.
Do it at your own speed. And, you don't really have to find a Series 3. You might get a really good deal on a Series 1 or two and then upgrade it later to a Series 3.
Whichever road you ultimately take, that road will no doubt lead you to the Gen. VIII I'm afraid. it happens. Especially when your Picky Picky, Picky
When you get your PR 3 upgrade and you hear your current DAC's @ 96k That may be all you need to make you happy for awhile, even without the Gen VIII
But you really can't fault Theta for not having room to build a device as good as the Gen. VIII into the CB-III.
There are a large amount of Gen. VIII owners hit this page with nothing but positive things to say,
Maybe they are all delusional, this is of course hi-end audio
